Comcast vs. ESPNU

There are a couple of things here that need to be addressed. As far as UConn being upset at being on ESPNU, it isn't the Rutgers game this week that caused this. It is the following weeks game with Cincinnati. VERY IMPORTANT DISTINCTION.

When the Cincinnati game was put on the U, the Huskies had already won 2 games and were in first place in the Big East and had their national ranking. So this crystal ball issue doesn't apply.

That would be 4 times that UConn is on ESPNU. And regardless of this weeks outcome they will still be the first place team in the Big East.

Now, 4 games on ESPNU is a lot. That is a third of the UConn schedule. The Big East contract with ESPN and ESPNU is a good thing for the conference most times. Mike Tranghese knows that and tried to do some damage control yesterday.

But ESPN has to remember that the games have to benefit the schools too. It has to be a mutually profitable situation. At this point in time, the relationship is not helping UConn. It's harming them.

ESPN shows games on ESPN Classic, ESPN News and other channels depending on the market when this issue comes up. Michigan-Minnesota comes to mind this past week. Why can't WTNH 8 New Haven use the ESPNU feed for that game like Detroit used it for the Classic feed for Michigan? Is it red tape? Yes. Why is it not possible? No one explains this.

On Saturday, ABC will have regional coverage of USF-Cincinnati. On ESPN, there will be a reverse mirror of another ABC game. What does that mean? ESPN in Connecticut will have the Michigan game on ESPN, while USF will be on ABC. In Michigan, USF will be on ESPN. UConn remains on the U.

So, ESPN, ABC etc. can play around with feeds and channels. It's more complicated than flipping the switch (advertiser buys and contracts etc.), but it can get done.

Why doesn't ESPN do this with Connecticut?

If it's contractual, then put the game on ESPN Classic or ESPN news only in Connecticut. It's not rocket science. a pain in the rear end? Yes.

I don't think they are using Connecticut specifically, but there is no doubt that when these games are unavailable, if the games are big enough, (see Rutgers NFL Network), a tremendous cry goes up to the cable companies (don't get me started on Comcast, they are terrible, so no sympathy).

ESPN is getting good programming and publicity for its ESPNU channel, but the 4th time the Huskies are on it this year (and in first place nonetheless) is excessive considering the unavailability of the network locally, it's pricing structure where available, lack of compensation to schools, and standing within the Big East conference

UConn needs to build a fan base. Making games accessible locally is NO. 1 priority for all college sports. National is great, but what's the use if a lot of your fans can't watch it, or have to pay extra?

They still are trying to sellout a stadium. Would West Virginia be happy if its games were shown on the U and unavailable in West Virginia to half its fans?

How does this benefit UConn? It doesn't.

For the first time, this team is generating tremendous amounts of excitement and it needs to capitalize on it. Being on ESPNU is preventing that. That's the plain truth.

Personally, I want ESPNU. It is an incredible channel and very very high quality. It's worth the money. I would pay for it if I was allowed (of course I have Comcast, which won't even give me Celtics games in HD, but that post is coming soon), but that isn't the issue. These college games HAVE to be allowed in local markets. If it is picked up by the U, there should be a way for it to get on local TV also.

Of course ESPN has rights to the game, they paid good money for it, why would they allow it to be broadcast locally? Then no one would call their cable company and request ESPNU, definitely not the volume. So ESPN is exercising its contractual rights, and they are well within their rights to do so, to further its business objectives.

But, ESPN and the Big East have to be partners in this. The games have to be advantageous for both UConn and ESPN and all the other Big East teams for that matter.

ESPN has to understand this. And from what I have read, they don't seem to realize the frustration or much care for the feelings of their partners.

Tuesday's JI

We got some good stuff Tuesday.

Here is Jeff Hathaway's take on ESPN, just in case this the only thing you ever read or see and didn't now UConn is upset at its continued placement.

Of course Randy Edsall and Greg Schiano hate comparing programs (especially when their program is the one perceived to be behind).

Lastly, Randy Smith checks in. He has the UConn football bug too.

Also, did an NFL Network College Football Now spot. Will be on NFL network at 6 p.m. and thereafter.

ESPN-Comcast --- Huskies in middle

Not much time, working on a lot of thigns, but spoke with Jeff Hathaway at the media lunch and UConn has expressed its displeasure appearing on ESPNU for the fourth time this year.

The HUskies were added to the schedule again at Cincinnati, which wasn't treated well.

Hathaway feels the Big East leader should be on the more available ESPN family of networks and the team is losing the exposure for recruting and other purposes that other first place teams in the Big East got when they were in similar situatiuons.

The crux of the matter is UConn (and Rutgers also) are being exploited by ESPNU in its fight with Comcast cable to get ESPNU on Comcast. The Cincinnati game is the fourth time UConn would appear on ESPNU this year. Now that the Huskies are ranked No. 16, UConn feels it is more appropiate to be on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC.

"It clear that the Univesity of Connecticut is being utilized to help the network (ESPNU) acheive its goals," Hathaway said. "We are sitting in first palce in the Big East. We should have the opportunity to capitalize on that position."

Hathaway has expressed his views to the Big East. Waiting on a callback from the Big East on this. ESPN, as a right holder, can take any game it chooses and put it on the ESPNU family of networks.

The Huskies also lose out on exposure and compensation. When an individual school appears on a game on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC they are compensated $100,000. For ESPNU? There is no compensation.

That, and the majority of UConn fans in Connecticut won't be able to watch the No. 16 ranked team in the country play.

Got a lot of work to do. That's it for today. I'll give my views later.

Update: Here are Jeff Hathway's first thoughts when asked about being on ESPNU. The straw that broke the camels back isn't Saturday's game against Rutgers, it is Monday's annoucement that the UConn-Cincinnati game is on the U. Keep that in mind. I think it is important to understand that. As a first place team, UConn feels it should't have to play games that a large portion of the state can't see, or has to pay a premium price to do so.

"I understand that the University of Connecticut is being used by the network to leverage cable companies in our state, that are important to the network, to add ESPNU to our platform.
As the team that is in first place in the Big East, our expectation is to play on ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC. We understand an occasional game on ESPNU.

I have relayed my concerns to the commissioner, first and foremost, that the first place team in the Big East is giving up exposure on a national basis -- that drives recruiting and drives fan interest. Secondarily, in our revenue sharing program in the Big East, teams on ESPNU aren’t compensated on a per game basis as you are on ESPN and ESPN2.

My primary concern is our exposure. This football program coaches and student athletes have worked hard to put us in a position to be successful. The institution has invested mightily in this program and we know the exposure we should be getting today, we are not getting. The exposure created leads to recruiting success and we want everyone to know that is our expectation to be on those platforms."

Monday''s JI

Lot's of stuff, spend 50 cents. Seriously though, I think the packaging in a newspaper really enhances the articles. It's a problem with the internet. It takes packaging out of your story, which is a challenge for journalists these days. Net is great for breaking news and information. But for storytelling, it leaves a lot to be desired. No photos, small headline, font doesn't translate. No packaging, just raw copy. That's a shame.

I would like to write better and write more involved stories and deal less with tracking down who the 3rd string left tackle is (Zach Hurd?).

Here is my take on Robinson's play.

Here is a notebook on the polls.

Here is our columnist Randy Smith checking in. "Those dogs aren't cool."... UConn has come a long way.

I am done with UConn football today. My mind is on the disaster that is brewing at the intersection of 161 Street and River Ave.

Update: Cincinnati game is 3:30 p.m. on ESPNU. This is getting ridiculous. Most of the state can't get the game. I don't think UConn can be happy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wanted A-Rod back, but after ruining the World Series last night (and make no mistake, he ruined it), I want no part of him. I love baseball, don't disrespect the sport like that. I hope baseball doesn't become the NBA, where the most interesting part of it is the off season.

Monday quick roundup

Scott Lutrus POW again. 8 tackles and an INT return for a score.

Defensive Player of the Week
Scott Lutrus, Fr., LB, Connecticut
Brookfield, Conn.
Lutrus, who also was named Defensive Player of the Week last week, had eight tackles and scored a touchdown on a 23m-yard interception return in Connecticut’s 22-15 win against No. 11 USF. Lutrus led a defense that forced two turnovers in registering the Huskies’ first win against a nationally ranked program.

WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Andre Dixon, RB, Connecticut —Rushed for 167 yards on 32 carries and caught three passes for 42 yards in a 22-15 win against No. 11 USF.
Danny Lansanah, LB, Connecticut — Had a game-high 16 tackles, including one tackle for loss, in a 22-15 win against No. 11 USF.

Other thoughts:

Don't look for much out of media day this week. It's back to the bunker. Only 6 captains and Tyler Lorenzen are allowed to speak. Too bad, maybe the stories were too good last week.

I would have liked to have talked with Ryan Henegan and perhaps Will Beatty (having a great year). But, Beatty has class on Tuesday's (in case you are wondering why he is never talked to). I was going to wait for him and even request a Wednesday meeting.

I mean, there has to be a quota on the number of Dan Davis quotes that can appear in one newspaper. Dan Davis is quoted more than White House press secratary Dana Perino. Can't wait, there will be 20 people hoarding Davis. Way to get fresh and interesting stuff.

Holy Trinity and rumble in the swamp

Here is the Trinity, .Tx. lateral play

Gotta believe every coach in the country is going to practice getting a player down. I wonder what Millsap thought after the game? Were they upset, embarrassed or just shocked?

This takes Stanford off the hooks. That play was routine compared to this.

And on other matters:

Here is Georgia going crazy in the worst act of sportsmanship I have ever seen. And I LOVE IT.

Sunday teleconference

Big boys in. Counted 16 people on the conference call including the Times and SI.

It lasted 20 minutes. Randy was pretty good, answering questions he has 1000 times for the national crowd.

Here is Edsall on being ranked No. 25:

“I think it is (a reflection) that the work that the kids have put in being 7-1 and 3-0 in the Big East people recognize we have done some good things,” Edsall said. “It’s a credit to the hard work of the players. It is nice for the program, it is another milestone, being second fastest team to ever do it speaks volumes of the effort to be get themselves there.”

He had breakfast with a recruit this morning. It was a good breakfast. Edsall says he has already seen the help in recruiting. Not the ranking of course, but the good start. 7-1 has its benefits.

UConn, AP 16 Coaches 20

There it is people. UConn NO. 16 in the Associated Press writers poll.

It looks weird. Florida and Alabama are behind the Huskies in the AP poll. Just doesn't look right....

For my money I like what the coaches did. No. 20 seems fair, though it is a bit much to see a three loss Auburn team at No. 17 ahead of 7-1 UConn, which beat N0. 21 South Florida, which happened to beat Auburn on the road.

I know everyone likes Florida and the SEC is a powerhouse. But, you do have to win games sometimes.

Is Florida one of the top 10 teams in the country? Probably. But, the poll is a snapshot. After another loss they should drop.

Or maybe we should just put Florida back in the national title game. A three loss Florida team is more deserving than West Virginia, which beat up Rutgers but still dropped a spot (end of snark).

College Football Saturday

First off, if you haven't seen it yet, take a look at the Trinity (Tx) with it's 15 laterals to knock off Millsap (Ms.).

It makes Cal-Stanford look like fullback dive. Will find it on youtube in the coming days.

Anyhow, here are some more thoughts:

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at Georgia's antics against Florida. I understand that no one likes Urban Meyer (understatement), but the entire Georgia offense comes on the field to celebrate on coach's orders?

That was ridiculous. He was going to make them run if they didn't get a celebration penalty? Does anyone know how ridiculous that is? He is lucky a riot didn't break out. Imagine if Randy Edsall pulled that here?

Then again, it was Urban Meyer on the other sideline...

Watched College Game Day Final, and the UConn-USF highlights were awful. It was so bad a package I gotta wonder if it was intentional (or incompetent?). I couldn't stop laughing at it. I thought it was funny in a Brittany Spears way.

They start with the holding call (don't show a replay) and then with the dropped passed. Then they show the 4th down pass and a voice over saying Grothe was sacked the play before. Lou Holtz smiles and says something about credibility. Mark May says that now Randy Edsall is on the short list for a BIG job.

What?

As the Guiness guy says... BRILLIANT.

I couldn't stop laughing. It was about as bad as it gets for television highlight segments. It had to have been intentional. No one is that bad at their job. At least show Robinson's sack, that was the play of the game and summed up USF's ineptitude.

It was so bad I laughed.

More thoughts.

  • West Virgina 31, Rutgers 3. Scary. That Mountaineer team is scary.L
  • Louisville finally caught a break. I don't see them apologizing for the victory.
  • Missed Jim Leavitt's postgame presser (if you can call it that). Pretty embarrassing as far as I am concerned from what people told me (I missed it because it lasted 2 minutes). From what I understand, everything was "Yep", "no" and that was it. Why even bother? These are adult men, be a professional and answer questions in complete sentences. You can be sarcastic, aggressive, cranky and even unruly. But he didn't even make it to the interview room. After watching him on the sideline last week against Rutgers (I thought he was going to Woody Hayes a player) then this performance, I gotta say he reminds me a lot of my 7 year old nephew. Bad loss for the Bulls, but Leavitt has to grow up. That is so high school football coach (or prep hockey coach, they are the worst). If Al Golden and Steve Kragthorpe can talk after their losses, Leavitt can talk after his.

  • Larry Taylor made a fair catch signal and the entire press box started to laugh. He waved it like a mad man. The special teams guy from USF came down and started to talk with him after the catch, funny stuff. And what was the deal about USF saying they were going to plant Taylor?

  • Watched the security guards try to stop the fans pouring on the field. Why do they have part timers making 8 bucks an hour try and stop a mob? If UConn wants them on there, let them go. It just shouldn't be an every week, or even every year happening. I don't know the Big East's rule, but Kentucky was just fined $50,000 for the LSU celebration (3rd offense). Best thing I heard was a poor yellow coat with an ice pack around his hand goes up to his supervisor. "You got to have a better plan than this." Of course, the goalpost was protected. No word if Desi Cullen took a shot at it.

  • Sexy bowl matchups. How about UConn-BC in the Orange Bowl and call it the Armagedon Bowl? Heck, it may happen in the Gator or the Meinike Bowl. It's a sports writers dream. The schools hate each other. I don't think BC would be happy about it. They want nothing to do with UConn. Actually, it would a unfortunate for both.
That would be the Armagedeon Bowl. How about the Lew Perkins Bowl? UConn vs. Kansas? They can play a basketball game at the half. Heck, I would watch.

Leaving The Rent

I can not say how big a win this is for UConn football (story up). There comes a point when you have to stop building and start winning. This building mentality has been in since I was a student at UConn. It's always been about building and patience. It was never about the moment.

The Huskies were good for a couple of surprises in the Orlovsky years, but there wasn't really a ton to get excited about. Yes, the novelty of a bowl, but no one thought UConn was going to a major bowl game. You went for the party, and believed that maybe one day UConn would have a shot...

It just seemed so far off in the distance. Patience for something that would never come. I don't know what is going to happen more this year. The schedule is tough and the Huskies could very well struggle coming in. But, things have fallen in place nicely for them.

And as I have said before, the fun is in the journey.

As the Huskies are on the brink of their first Top 25 appearance (how about that?) the future is finally here.

Randy Edsall, who has always downplayed wins and has tried and take the pressure of his team knows it better than anyone else.

Edsall couldn't down play this win. And he didn't. He is going to enjoy this one. It looked liked he wanted to go out and play Rutgers later today. The fans stormed the field, the players celebrated, and Randy even was caught swearing (according to him) on national television.

That is college football. Students on the field cheering on players and singing the UConn fight song. The band playing for an hour after the game. Who would have thought?

UConn suddenly thinking anything is possible. And the thing is, anything is possible now.

You all excited yet?

USF postgame

Got to run now, but, the fearless head coach broke down an admitted it -- This is the biggest win in UConn football history.

Elated. 7-1, 3-0 Big East, national ranking coming.

There is just something about your first time...

Live game thread USF

Little late. On the desk last night, and didn't get a chance to breathe.

Here are quick

Keys to the game:

1. Protect Lorenzen
Can't allow Selvie to run wild. Give Lorenzen time

2. Contain Grothe running
Got to stay disciplined and not lose outside contain and allow Grothe to make too many plays on the run. Force him to be a pocket passer.

3. Win turnover battle
UConn is +11, USF +10. Winner here wins the game.

Pregame Chatter:Looks like a lot of tents up. The weather is weird. It should be colder than it is. The rain is semi warm and there is a warm breeze. It is fogging up all the windows. Not muggy, though it is a bit uncomfortable. Steady win blowing from student section end to the scoreboard. Should be interesting.

First quarter

Update 3:47 p.m.: Great opening drive stalls at the 4. Three straight running plays on 1st and 10 from the 11? I don't get it. 3-0. Like Virginia, gotta hope it doesn't come back to bite.

BTW, monsoon broke out. Dry in the tower though.

1st Quarter wrap: 3-0 Huskies. Two missed Fgs by USF. The 26-yarder that was missed was a very difficult kick in the conditions. 46 yarder was too. Lorenzen INT should have ben caught by Kanuch, though it was a throw into triple coverage. UCOnn needs a passing game. Tyler has time, no one open.

In honor of the Breeders Cup. UConn is a mudder.

Second quarter

Update 4:35 p.m.: Brouse TD! Then, Lutrus comes up with INT off a tip from Williams and run back for a 26-yard touchdown. Wow. 16-0 UConn. Taking to USF now. Just flat out taking it out on USF.

Halftime wrap: Andre Dixon 19 rushes 115 yards at the half. Had a chance there on the final drive but couldn't get 3 or 4 more yards for Ciaravino. A bungled play and a spike probably cost the Huskies a legit chance at points. GReat job by the Huskies controlling Grothe. Grothe 4-8 40 yards passing and 10 rushes 46 yards. Only one big broken play got the USF offense inside the 10.

Note: Brut Sun Bowl is here.

Third quarter

Update 5:50 p.m. Safety on blocked punt not terrible. But, you can't score 63 seconds in 29 seconds. 9 points in one minute. 5:38 back. 16-9. That was a critical missed tackle on Grothe 55 plus yard run. That's the big play that has killed UConn.

4 sacks by the USF defense this quarter.

Friday ramblings

Here is Friday's notebook on Anthony Sherman. he is going to be a good player here. I had some other stories too, but the illustrious JI website ate them. Spend 50 cents and buy the paper. It's great to use as cover for your floor when you are painting (to think we work so hard to end up at the bottom of a bird cage).

Oh well. Nice win by Boston College. I thought Ryan showed why he is going to win the Heisman and why he is going to be very very good NFL quarterback. Mobility in the pocket, can throw the ball with accuracy and touch, and he has a pro arm. He made 7 or 8 throws that were just NFL throws, including the game-winner which showed great arm strength.

I want my QB accurate first, and then a strong arm closely behind. Ryan has both.

UConn-USF going to 28 percent

Checked the ABC coverage map and here is the breakdown:

USF-UConn 28 percent
Clemson-Maryland 16 percent
Nebraska-Texas -- 54 percent
Michigan-Minny-- 2 percent (ouch)

Anyhow, the UConn-USF game is going to the ENTIRE Northeast and New England area including Boston. It will also be in NYC, Philly, New Jersey and the entire State of Florida. All of Pennsylvania will get the game as well as parts of Ohio (Cincinnati) and Kentucky (Louisville, Lexington). There are also parts of West Virginia who are getting the game as well as some stations in Georgia. But, the entire state of Florida is getting the game, which is a big thing.

Thanks for the info from Matt Buckler, who is without a doubt the best TV writer in the state by a large margin. It's too bad his stuff isn't available online, really good stuff.

100-of-109- (correction 99-of-108)

Small note while writing my story.

Of the 108 players listed on the South Florida roster, 99 of them are from the state of Florida. it would take Connecticut 20 years to put out that many players, maybe longer.

Just wanted to share.

edit, it's 99-out-108.

triple checked before putting in my story. That's still a lot of players.

Tuesday presser

Really good stuff here this week. I got a lot of interviews to transcribe and some good stories. Or, maybe I am more positive this week than last. But, some good stuff.

First off, Andre Dixon is now the official starter at running back. I am not surprised. Dixon sat or about 15 minutes with us and is as real as you can be. He has an edge to him, and I like that.

He really provides a tremendous amount of energy to the offense. As far as Brown? He is going to see time, but Donald is putting too much pressure on himself and is thinking and over analyzing ever single play. That's his big problem. Just got to clear his head and get a confidence boost.

Also talked with guards Lawrence Green and Alex LaMagdelaine who both are doing well. It's 50-50 who will start. Green is nearly 100 percent after tearing his MCL and PCL in the right knee 5 weeks ago. He rehabbed it, and it is good now. He hasn't discussed surgery after the season yet.

Also, LaMagdelaine had a right high ankle sprain. He is ok and should be able to play. Both are good options. Alex LaMagdelaine is a really valuable player. He can go in play both guard spots and a center. Don Thomas' shoulder is also all right per Green.

Epithath on Taylor: Yes, yes, I know.

LT, nor Tyvon Branch, were allowed to speak to the media this week. Edsall refused to comment on it one last time.

Personal opinion? I think Tranghese had the right view. Whether Taylor intentionally made a fake fair catch (I don't think that is true) or just ran after the whistle wasn't blow, it's up to the official to make a call. I don't think Taylor intentionally did it. And it certainly wasn't a planned play. Everyone stopped playing and blocking. So it isn't in the UConn special team package.

Officials screwed up, that was a bad as one as I have ever seen, but it happens. Seriously though, that may be one of the worst official blunders of all time. It ruined the game for both teams.

It reminds me of professional wrestling when the only guy who doesn't see the good guy get hit over the head by the chair is the referee, who is off arguing with the manager. Everyone saw the play except the guy who counted. It's just ridiculous. Anyhow, it's over. For good as far as I am concerned.

Lastly, chatted with Anthony Sherman for the first time. Decent stuff about him being a fullback. BC offered, he liked UConn's fit better. The breaking news however is he is not a Red Sox fan. Yes that's right, he is a member of the Evil Empire living in enemy territory. Thick Mass. accent, he is the perfect spy.

Good for him. Go Rockies.

Lutrus POW

Guess you do have to win the game. Certainly deserving.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Scott Lutrus, RFr., LB, Connecticut
Brookfield, Conn.
Lutrus had a game-high 18 tackles and a second-half interception to help keep the Huskies retain sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST with a 21-17 win against Louisville. Lutrus led a Connecticut defense that held Louisville’s potent offense to a season-low in points while forcing three Cardinal turnovers.

Huskies No. 23 in BCS poll

Huskies are 23 in BCS. First ever appearance.

Here is a part of the UConn release:

The BCS rankings are a combination of the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll, the Harris Interactive Poll and the average of six computer rankings (excluding the highest and lowest computer rank). UConn is 29th in the Harris Poll, 28th in the coaches poll and is tied for 16th in the computer rankings, earning the Huskies a BCS average of 0.1360. That average places UConn in 23rd place, just ahead of No. 24 Alabama and just behind the Crimson Tide’s rival Auburn at No. 22.

“It is a nice milestone for our program to be included in the BCS standings for the first time,” UConn head coach Randy Edsall said. “It speaks well to the dedication of our players, coaches and staff, but right now our focus is entirely on Saturday’s game against South Florida.”

The computer doesn't lie, does it?

Final, final thoughts

Just wrote a notebook about Taylor play, and you know what? I am sick of it. So here is how I feel in as short as possible. THEN NO MORE TAYLOR STUFF unless it is news.

On play: Bad officiating, can't blame Taylor. Did what he is supposed to do. Louisville should have played the whistle.

On Impact on game: Important, but not decisive. A little over blown. Doesn't taint the win. 17-7 rally is the story. No need for UConn to apologize. Win's a win.

On Taylor: Can't blame him for bad officiating.

Referees: Clueless

Edsall's non-take: Disappointing.

That's it, I got a column and notebook on Taylor. running tomorrow morning. Then, it's back to football. I won't even link the columns this time. I don't want discussion on it. Don't even think about asking.

Edit: LOL. Just won't end. Like a Freddy Kruger movie. The Big East is acknowledging that it was an egregious error on the play. It is an unusual move, but they felt it was important to make it public.

Just spoke with John Paquette, Big East associate commissioner half and hour ago:

"We acknowledge that an error was made on that play, and we are taking action accordingly with the officials. An error was made on the call and we are taking appropriate action because we thought the error was serious enough to warrant action. We aren't making the (discipline) public but we are acknowledging (that it will take place). "

I asked about the Tyvon Branch play, and there was no admitting of an error on the Big East's part. That doesn't mean it was the correct call.

Okay, no more Taylor stuff.

Sunday teleconference

Hope you weren't searching for closure on the unfair catch (I just love calling it that). Randy Edsall wasn't going to talk about it. Any thoughts on whether the officials blew the call, or made the right call, or whether Taylor faked the play or just went when he didn't hear the whistle is going to have to wait.

Edsall didn't want to talk about that, or the possible muff punt off the arm of Carter that was called downed at the 16 instead of a turnover at the Cardinals' 1.

Here is what Randy Edsall said. He also said he hasn't talked to Larry about it.

Citing league process for complaints about officials, Edsall said he would go to the Big East and let them take care of any official reactions.

Is it a fair or unfair play? I haven't heard anyone official say is it or not. That doesn't inspire confidence in the veracity of the result.

That stonewall actually clouded what I believe, and Edsall does, the real story. The Huskies rally from 17-7 down to win a game and get bowl eligible.

But you can't get to that point however until you take care of the fair/unfair catch. There are still questions. I'll try Tuesday.

Edit: Just edited out some opinion and extraneous venting.

Almost forgot: Some other nuggets.

Lawrence Green played for LaMagdelaine who left with an injury. As per new rules, there will be no injury reports. LaMegdelaine could play this week, or he could not.

Big East roundup/Moratorium on Taylor talk

Here is Saturday's game story. Written under duress. As my good friend from the Hartford Courant Shawn Courchense says: "Nothing is more fun than watching a JI writer on Friday night."

How true. It's one thing to write on deadline. It's another to do it only maybe 5 times year under that type of constraint. I hate deadline, but I hit it with a story I liked (though flawed). Then I got home and wrote for Scout's site. I stayed up through the third quarter of the UConn replay.

Okay, no more Taylor talk on the blog until Edsall comments tommorrow. I will not think about it.

Pittsburgh knocks off Cincinnati. Syracuse wins. I don't get this college football season. USF, BC in the top 5. Kentucky top 10. UConn 6-1. Miami and Fla St.? Nothing. Notre Dame? Don't ask.

Next thing you know the Rockies are going to win the World Series.

More Taylor thoughts

More on the Taylor play. I am surprised at what I have read and the general consensus that this mars the UConn win.

I honestly don't see it like that. I thought the Temple play was the gift of all-time. Not this one. This was a break. Breaks happen in sports. Through no fault of UConn's own they got a gift and took advantage. Is it any different than the Jeff Maier catch off Jeter's flyball? Yanks don't win the World Series in 1996 because of it. How about the Knoblauch phantom tag in 1999 against the Red Sox?

How about Jordan's blatant push off of Byron Russell before the game-winning basket?

Has anyone mentioned that the Rockies' Matt Holliday actually has yet to touch the plate on the winning run off Hoffman in the one game Wild Card playoff three weeks ago?

In football, there is the famous 5th down for Colorado. Officials blow calls all the time. It's unfortunate, but there is nothing you can do but say thanks you to the officials.

What is at play here is everyone is searching to legitimize UConn. Writers, pundits, fans etc. want that clean, crisp game that is perfect to hang your hat on. Especially when you come out of nowhere, you want to make sure it's real.

You don't get that often in sports however.

I can appreciate that. But, you can't let that search for sureness lead you to dismiss the result.

UConn has outplayed every team it has faced this year. If the games were clean and no wackiness, UConn would be 7-0. But, the games aren't clean, there are bad calls, bonehead errors etc that help decide games.

The Taylor non-call ruined the game for both teams. It didn't cause Louisville to lose.

Update (more thoughts): This is a hot topic been answering about a dozen emails from friends and colleagues on this today. Some have changed my mind on things, but not the heart of the matter. Reading everything and seeing the play about 30 times it looks like Taylor tried to fool the coverage guy. I don't really have a problem with this to be honest.

I will be interested to see what Taylor says Tuesday, but the onus is on the official here. If the official doesn't feel that Taylor's deke is an invalid fair catch signal (how does he not?), then the play is legal.

IT IS CLEAR FROM THE RULES, that that was not a legal fair catch (which many thought it was). The question is was it an invalid fair catch or a good deke? I think it was a penalty, but the official saw it differently. That is why it is not reviewable. That's a judgment call.

If the above is the case, it's a dangerous play for Taylor. He was quoted after the game that he was playing "mind games with the players." Not sure of the context as I wasn't there for that. If this is the case the return team has every right to plow him.

It may have been a great move by Taylor if he had that planned, but it is a dangerous one. Rule of thumb for him now is going to be if you don't see LT wave the arm frantically put him in the ground.

The more I get away from it, it looks like a better football play than just a ridiculous blown call by the officials. Just a dangerous football play. Looked at it a bunch.

I don't see why Taylor should apologize for the play. If it's legal, it's legal. If a penalty should be called, it should be called. Not his fault either way. Bad officiating.

On the impact of the play: Significant, but not decisive. It didn't give the Huskies momentum since Louisville scored the next 10 points (you don't get down 10 with all the momentum).

The game started at 17-7. Everything before that was just setting up the final 12 minutes.

Taylor, Fair or Unfair?

Here is the Taylor play. It is clear he puts his arm up. Reading the rules, that is not a legal fair catch. So, it is not a clear fair catch as people are saying...BUT...it is an illegal fair catch. He made a motion to the sky and that stopped the punt coverage. That by definition is an illegal fair catch. Should have been a penalty.

What does that mean?

First off, Taylor must have thought he didn't fair catch it because he ran right away. You are taught to play the whistle, bad job by Louisville. They quit on the play, is it a tough break? Yup.

Now, at 7-7 it is tied and there is a long way to go. Louisville has no one to blame but themselves. 17-7 with 11 minutes left and the best quarterback, and one of the best offenses in the country didn't get it done. The defense olayed it in the fourth quarter.

What is UConn supposed to do after that play? Stop playing? Give points back? This isn't like Temple because that was the final play of the game. Louisville had ample chances to make up for that play, and did indeed take a 17-7 lead. There was so much game left that the entire game doesn't hinge on that play.

It's an important play, and a tough break, but Louisville quit on the play and then squandered a 17-7 lead in the fourth.

You can't whine about that. They had chance to win and a double digit lead in the final quarter. It ws a bad call for Louisville, but it wasn't a game winning or losing call.

Post Louisville wrapup

Elation with the Huskies. These are the kind of games that build programs. Randy Edsall was even-keeled, but you could see the euphoria on his face. He isn't a good actor.

He said it is up for the media to decide where this ranks.

This is the biggest. Here is why? It was on national TV against a name program and a name team. Louisville is a mess, but I remember maybe 6 or 7 years ago Louisville defeating a mess of a Miami program and how that exploded the program. This is a win unlike any the program has had.

Take Dan Davis' thoughts:

"This was the year to take it to the next level,” UConn defensive end Dan Davis said. “Keep going, keep going. We wanted to do something special this year and we are starting to do it. We got to keep it going. When we are done, these (freshmen) have enough talent to keep this going. This is a good program.”

6-1, 2-0 in the Big East. You are your record.

The defense stopped that air attack from Louisville. Yes, conditions matter and the Taylor play was ridiculous, but 17-7 12 minutes left, they came back. Defense stopped Brohm and Co. twice. The offense made the plays.

Big win for the Huskies.

I felt this team is much better than last year, been saying it all year, and you have to have confidence that the Huskies are going to pull off those "home upsets" This is the first, I don't think it is going to be the last. How far can they take it? I don't know. They have some flaws. But you know what? For one day, enjoy the ride.

The fun in sports is going along for the ride. It's the journey that captivates us, not the result.

Live Game thread Louisville

Pregame: Got to Rent not much problem. Ran into traffic through Hartford. It's probably a mess now.

It's raining here, and the harder the better for the Huskies. It's going to be a wet night anyway, the Hsskies got to hope that will help slow down Brohm and Co.

Update: It's raining buckets (love that metaphor). Looks like it is going to let up, but the field is soaked. Who does that help? Not sure. If Brohm has troubling holding the ball UConn, if he can't throw it where he wants, it's going to be tough to guard them.

Made the mistake of trying to visit a friend. Got soaked through my clothes.

BTW, wind is whipping 20 MPH from student section end to scoreboard. That way. Rain is picking up again. I am so happy I am inside.

More later, if anything breaks before game time.

I know the fans come late. But, this place should be at least 90 percent capacity.

Update 7:35 p.m.: Bunch of changes for Louisville. I can't even keep track . Depth chart is blown up. NO Harry Douglas or Mario Urrutia in the starting lineup.

Here are the changes: Scott Long and Patrick Carter in for Douglas and Urrutia. Right guard change with Abdul Kuyateh over MIke Donoghue and a change at running back with Brock Bolen in instead of Anthony Allen. On defense, changes at defensive end, and the backup is in at RCB, Woody Turenne.

For Huskies -- Andre Dixon will start. That's it.

Update (7:46 p.m.): 14 minutes until gametime, the place is empty. Coming off seeing Virginia (I know, perfect weather), this doesn't cut it. They had 60,000 in the building 10 minutes before the game. There is about 1000 people in the building.

First quarter

Three fumbles on opening drive, and finally it cost them. Keys to the game. Fumble at the Louisville 15.

HMM. Let's see. 3 fumbles on the opening drive finally lose it in the red zone. Okay, shanked punt gives Louisville the ball on the 39. Then a third down sacked inside the 10 but a facemask. Next play 2-yard touchdown.

7-0 Cardinals. That about sums it up. end of first.

Second quarter

7-0 at half.

Missed opportunities and missed chances. 20 of first 21 plays were runs. Fourth down call with Donald Brown right call, bad pitch by Lorenzen. Team 's toughest opponent is itself. First and 20 and Louisville made a first down, then a 1st and 25 and they made a first down. All poor tackling. Nice INT by Butler on trick play and Huskies have two timeouts, down 7-0 and backed up with 2:16 left in the half. Four straight runs to end the half.

7-0.

The weather is a major factor here, but you got to show confidence in your team. I don't feel Randy Edsall is showing confidence in his team. Especially after pushing the first down across the first time. UConn never took a shot.

To sum up half. Two red zone opportunities, ZERO points.

Here are the negative plays:

3 fumbles, a shanked punt, a face mask on a sack on third down that would have forced a short field goal, a roughing the passer for a first down, unable to convert on third and shot, holding penalty killed a 9-yard run,and two missed tackles allowing Louisville to convert third and long and play field position late in the second quarter.

Third quarter

Umm, fair catch? What is the official doing? I don't get it. Some explanation is needed. Not reviewable I guess. 74 punt return for a TD. 7-7.

Almost run it back, but there is a flag. I got to get a ruling. That is as bad as an officials call as I have ever seen.

Update (9:48 p.m.): Fair catch not reviewable. Horrible possession after Lutrus INT. Just bad offense.

3rd wrap: Officials have lost control. embarrassing performance by student section and others throwing hats onto the field. Brohm is starting to get into a rhythm.

Keys to the Louisville game

Here we are. Going to leave for the stadium at 2:30. Remember, live game blogging, at least as much as I can.

Keys to the game

Pressure Brian Brohm

It goes without saying. Unless the Huskies feel they can win a game in the 40s, they must pressure Brohm. It isn’t necessarily sacks, but the defense has to move Brohm around in the pocket. The defensive line has to get pressure and they are going to have to knock him around and make Brohm feel uncomfortable.

Finish off drives

UConn has to complete long drives with touchdowns. The Huskies are going to need to put up a lot of points and they can’t get there kicking short field goals. Every field goal inside the redzone is four points lost.

Pound the football with the run

Louisville is giving up 160 yards a game rushing on defense. The best way to stop Brohm and Co. is to keep them on the sidelines. Time consuming ball control offense is still the best defense.

USF-Rutgers

Wow. Great football game. Must win for Rutgers. If they had any designs on doing better than the Papajohn's bowl this was a must. They are back in it. Ray Rice was a monster.

As far as the game, Schiano was brilliant. He saw opportunities and went with it. If he kicked the fg's or punted the ball instead of the fakes the Scarlet Knights lose the game. No risk, no reward. Sometimes being conservative and managing the game bites you at the end. I think the punt and fake field goal really charged Rutgers up. You got to play to win. It's fine line between risky and stupid, but Schiano took some great risk tonight that paid off. Schiano showed confidence in his team.

As far as USF, self destructed on special teams, and what the heck was Grothe and the offensive doing on those final two possessions. They started at the Rutgers 40 and 49 and all they needed was a field goal.

It's not rocket science. Have Grothe use his legs to make plays. He was facing a monster pass rush and he stood in the pocket like Byron Leftwich after he broke his ankle. Ridiculous.

Then, he gets caught for a sack on first down and spikes it for third and 22? Awful job. Roll Grothe out there and let him use his legs. I really don't get it.

Is UConn alone atop the Big East?

Thursday thoughts

If your a college football fan, you gotta be watching USF-Rutgers. I plan on having the Rutgers game on and keeping a tab on Red Sox-Indians. If the Red Sox are about to be eliminated however, it's going on my HD channel and I will celebrate. If Sox are up, keeping it on the Rutgers game.

I am picking USF, I think quarterbacks wins games like this and Grothe is as good as they come. I will also pat myself on the back for picking USF to win the league (don't worry, I thought Louisville would finish second at 10-2, so I am not that smart).

I am interested in Rutgers. I haven't seen them play like they did last year (didn't see the Cuse game) and there comes a point when last year is over and you got to start playing this year. I get a sense people are still putting a lot of stock in 2006 for Rutgers. If they get the doors blown off by USF, that will end quickly. This is a must win for Rutgers. They lose this one and they can kiss the top 3 positions in the Big East goodbye. I think Louisville is going to rebound and finish third in the league. That leaves Cincy, Rutgers and UConn fighting out for 4-6. A 5th or 6th place finish is disastrous for Rutgers considering the preseason expectation. I think a strong 4th would be fine. If the Scarlets Knights go 4-3 and are in 4th, and they started out 1-2 in conference, that would be a good rebound.

Rutgers wins tonight? Team to be reckon with.

Anyhow, had a battle with Comcast last night (cable companies are the worst). Some dope didn't put the Celtics-Knicks preseason game on in Connecticut. Now, it's preseason, but there was nothing else on and I was annoyed. Can people just do their job correctly? This shows how silly the cable industry is. If I want Comcast Sportsnet New England in high definition, I have to go to directtv. That's right, Comcast doesn't offer Comcast Sportsnet HD. I can't think of one reason to have cable over satellite except for bundled price and convenience (in a condo, satellite is a pain). It really is an inferior product.

Now onto UConn, sorry didn't post yesterday I had some other business to tend to. Listened to the teleconference on Wednesday late and there were some good nuggets.

Brown's going to play, thought Dixon start and get a lot of action. It's about production, but I wouldn't bury Brown just yet. I think he just needs to be patient and clear his head. He has tremendous power, and that is what Dixon doesn't have.

Aaron Bagsby gone for the year is no a surprise. The kid hasn't played since the first game, and with the return of Dahna Deleston this summer it is probably best he gets that extra year. He's a playmaker and will be a good player.

Plan on heading to Cabella's on Friday. Maybe to yell at them, or probably just to be one of those people.

Tuesday presser -- back to the bunker

Short week for the Huskies and the pressure is on Friday night with Louisville.

First off, there isn't any more news to report on anything. UConn is hunkering down in its bunker and information is tight.

Donald Brown is fine and he is practicing. Will he play? Has he been passed by Andre Dixon? Are they going to split carries? What percentage is Brown?

Randy Edsall continues to be non-committal and intentionally evasive for whatever reason that I don't really get. Brown is either hurt or not. If he is limited because of injury, say he is limited. If Dixon is a better back, say it. It's certainly acceptable scenario to assume that a 100 percent Dixon is better than a 90 percent Brown. Heck, if they were both healthy Dixon may be better. For the money, I like Brown, but I think both have a place in the offense and complement each other. To continue to be evasive begs for antagonistic follow up questions and cranky blogger posts.

I don't think this is a big deal, both guys are good, but it is fast becoming one.

Then he said we (the media) were making too much of a deal about the backs and who starts. I guess none of the 40,000 Huskies fans and thousands others reading, listening and following the team are the least bit interested in the running back situation.

Snarkiness aside --

This week Edsall predetermined who gets to speak the media and wasn't allowing requests as is custom. Dan Davis, Darius Butler, Tyvon Branch, Tyler Lorenzen, DJ and LT were brought up. They were all pretty good. It was a good mix.

Tyler Lorenzen was asked about the silent count and said he was told by the coaches to not talk about the final sequences to the media. So if you want to know why he went off the silent count you are out of luck. No one pressed Lorenzen, he got his marching orders, but it was actually a very difficult spot to put the player in. Lorenzen is cool and calm though and came through nicely. Classy person. If he was at fault I have no doubt he could have handled questions effectively.

On Cabella's:

Lieutenant Paul Vance talked to us and let's just say --disaster is looming. Get to the game early. If the exit ramp gets blocked up they are going to wave you past. They won't allow traffic to build up on the highway. Double your estimated arrival time.

Lots open at 3 p.m. Get there early. If your going to try and parachute in after work it is going to be a nightmare.

The state, university, East Hartford, and everyone else not buying hunting gear isn't happy with Cabella's.

BTW, why does Cabella do this? Marketing genius.

Cabella's is getting free advertising on every major media outlet in the state. Every newspaper tomorrow will have a story on the traffic caused by Cabella's soft opening. (the officalgran opening is in a couple of weeks).

What does that do? First off, you learn Cabella's is opening Friday and that there is a Cabella's in East Hartford next to Rentschler Field. Then you learn that it is very popular.

What more advertising do you need? For free, Cabella's gets to let people know where they are located, that they are very popular, and what kind of store it is.

Genius.

Great corporate citizens, huh?

You got to remember, Cabela's will draw between 15,000 -30,000, Pratt and Whiteny is getting off work, the fans are coming in, and there is a rush hour traffic that will slow Hartford to a crawl.

Monday update

Just some quick notes Monday.

  • The USF game Oct. 27 is going to be on ABC. Obviouly, USF is the hook, but any time you can get on free tv, even if it is regionalized, that helps recruiting. I am unsure if Comcast is going to pick up the ABC affiliate (snark). Doubt it is in high def, which would make me upset except for the fact I am going to be at the game anyway. Not sold out.
  • Lawrence Wilson is only on the honor roll? I didn't watch any of the other games, but 17 tackles, 11 solo, three for a loss at Virginia should be worth Big East Player of the Week. Do you have to win to get on it? It's not like Osi Umenyiora won the thing this week.

Anyhow. Here are the JI's Monday stories. Got a column on the game and the team losing composure. Also, here is the notebook off of Sunday's teleconference. If your reading this blog, nothing you didn't already know.

You got to remember we don't have a Sunday paper.

Sunday update

Lot's of good stuff here. Will update more later, but I got to get work done for the paper that pays the bills.

First off: Lorenzen and the offense were running on a cadence vocal snap count. They were supposed to be running on a silent count as they have practiced all week. Randy Edsall said they didn't have an explanation for why they went to a vocal snap count. Inexplicable. They were on a silent count for most of the game.

I don't really know what to say about that. I don't know how anyone can hear with 60,000 plus i the shotgun. Edsall didn't know they were running a cadence until after the game and after the media interview (which would explain how he was at a loss how the line and quarterback get a silent count mixed up.) I don't know. It's just one of those things. Not much too it more than that.

Also, Donald Brown was available to play, and could have played, but the coaching staff decided to go with Andre Dixon. That's not to say Brown is benched, or Dixon is the No. 1. It's also not correct to say that Brown didn't play because of injury. It's somewhere in between. Where that between is, I can't tell you.

Randy counted 8 offensive plays that if the Huskies make one, or don't make a turnover or penalty, it changes the game and the Huskies win. That's a lot of plays to leave on the field.

Be back with more late.

BTW, Mo Petrus was listed on the UConn participation report. I guess he played on special teams. Virginia didn't include a participation report. I will confer with UConn.

Update: My hunch was correct. Mr. Petrus never made the trip. It was a typo on UConn's part.

Stuck in Philly -- yeah

Was thinking of just taking the rental and driving home Saturday night. Would have been home by 3 a.m. or 4 a.m.

Instead, my 9:30 a.m. to Charlottesville is delayed because the pilot needed another half hour of sleep per FAA regulations (they knew last night, why not let me know so I could have gotten on United before it was booked, or drive to Dulles?). So, my 11:30 connector from Philly is in jeopardy. It's an hour flight, so it is supposed to depart at 10:15 a.m. The pilot jerks around checking controls and takes off at 10:30.

We land in Philly at 11:30. The gates are right next to each other, a 20 feet walk. Plane is pulling out of the gate as I and Waterbury's Ed Daigneault try and see if we made it. Missed the connector by 10 minutes (LITERALLY). Nice job U.S. Air. Now I got a 2 1/2 hour lay over.

Should have took United.

Of course, the UConn football team was home in bed by 10 p.m. on Saturday night. Gotta be nice to charter.

Anyhow, here is the game story from the JI website.

On second thought, I thought UConn played well but they may be kicking themselves at the end of the season. Too many missed opportunities on offense to feel good about how you played.

6-0 looks a whole lot better than 5-1. More after the 4 p.m. conference call -- if I make it (70 percent chance I blow it).

UConn-UVA postgame

Tough loss for the Huskies. I thought they played very well, they just didn't finish off drives. It's a one thing to lose by mistakes, which the only one really was a fouled up snap (more on that later), but the Huskies just left too many plays out there. I'll go back, but there were about 8 or 9 opportunities to really make a game-changing play. Brouse had a sure big gainer (maybe a TD) go off his hands. The three drives inside the 10 that netted six total points. There were a couple of surefire sacks of Sewell that he escaped from.

Anyone here are some pieces of info:
  • The SNAP. Huskies weren't on a silent count as far as I can gather (some confusion in this area). The snap count was vocalized and Gray and a couple of other linemen thought they heard the cadence. Gray said he couldn't hear a thing out there. Lorenzen said the same. They worked on this by piping in the fight song of UVA this week. But, you can never simulate pressure. The second fumble was on Tyler.
He didn't handle the snap. Stunning.
  • The crowd was really a factor. Tremendous atmosphere. Lots of false starts and penalties. Crowd made a difference. It's a learning experience for the Huskies.
  • Also, a key play was after the snap mess. Huskies lost a timeout with Lansanah's show came off. Someone on the sideline was supposed t be ready to go in just in case, and that person wasn't (Greg Lloyd, Aaron Bryant? Someone else?)
  • Andre Dixon started and rushed for 63 yards. No sign of Donald Brown, no idea when he can come back. Brown was obviously not fine when Edsall said he was fine on Tuesday.
  • As far as going for two down 14-12 in the third quarter. No one asked about it (there was so much other stuff) but I don't think that's a good spot. Just too much time left in the game to be chasing the point the entire second half. If the Huskies don't tie it up and trail 14-12 it becomes a 2 score game with a UVA touchdown (9 points). Example, if UVA punches it in on their drive instead of getting a field goal late UConn can't win. Unless it is desperation, I don't like going for 2 in that situation. Right call by Randy with so much time in the third.

Live Virginia Game thread

Pregame: Scott Stadium and the campus are beautiful. Open air press box which gives the feeling of sitting in the stadium. UVA fans everywhere. Classy too, women in dresses, men in khaki pants and UVA hats.

Be back with any pregame news.

First quarter:

Update (3:43): Deleston finally makes a pick. Good drive down and Tony C a 46 yarder for a 3-0 UConn lead. That's a good start.

Update: 3:47: Fumble on kickoff by UVA. Cody Brown recover. Ball on 13. Big opportunity here.

Update 3:39: Bad job by UConn. Got to take points inside the 10, but a 21 yard field goal feels like UVA scored. 10-0 would be huge. 6-0? Feels like UVA scored. If you aren't going to go for it on 4th down -- why not play action?

Update (4:!4): UVA drives down for the go ahead score. Got to stop the QB from running. 7-6 UVA 38 seconds left.

Halftime update: Sorry about updates, bad net connection. Anyhow, Huskies can' be feeling too good. Had a golden opportunity to go up 10-0 and couldn't get a yard on second and 1 from the 4 to go up 6-0.

Also, had a chance to make a play on Seweell on third and 7, but Dan Davis can't get him down. 18 yards later drive is alive and a running back pass leads to a 14-6 score. You get off the field there it's 7-6.

Finally D.J. Hernandez fumbles it at the VA 5. If you are going to win games on the road like this you got to score TDs deep, and don't commit turnovers (especially in the red zone).

Jekyl and Hyde play calling. Don't go for it it inside the 4-yard line early and settle for 3. Elect to kick a 52 yard field goal on 4th and 4 that wasn't close (I would have went for it). You got to be a little more aggressive. Kind of like playing with house money.

First sustained drive of the half ends with a turnover inside the 5. Tough break. Game is far from over, but UConn has already missed out on 3 or 4 potentially game changing plays.

THird quarter:

Update 5:26: Vaughn INT. 1st and goal at the 6. UConn has to punch this in.

Update: Brouse TD off play action. UConn TD. 14-13. Coaching staff must be reading the blog. Love play action down inside the 10.

Update: Huskies left a play on the field. Brouse open on play action may have went for a TD. Bad pass by Lorenzen, but Brouse still should have caught it. Another one left out there.

Fourth quarter

14-13. UConn defense has been excellent. Another turnover would be huge. Offense can't sustain drives. At 14-13 however, one play can change the game.

Update 6:14 p.m.: UConn up 16-14. Defense is going to have to win this. Once again, inside 10 and can't put it down. Don't like 2nd down run with Lou Allen. Lou doesn't seem to get to the line fast enough. Alose, 3rd down fade to the endzone? Didn't need a score, needed 3 yards for a first down. 16-14 though, 8 minutes left. Defense is going to win this game.

Update 6:31 p.m.: UVA field go. Couple of big plays 19 yard FG. 17-16. UConn has plenty of time left and a couple of timeouts. 3:20 left. GREAT FOOTBALL GAME!!!

Update: I don't know what just happened. Bad snap loses 21 yards. Then a bad snap leads to a TO. They had this game in the pocket. Stunning turn of events.

Keys to the Virginia game

Posting them a bit early because i have time. At Bradley waiting at gate 28 right now. I got a feeling that I am going to get delayed in Philadelphia. You always get delayed in Philly, especially with the rain.

Anyhow, I got a good feeling about Saturday for the Huskies. Are they favorites? No. But I don't see how Virginia can pull away barring defensive touchdowns or special teams scores. I don't think they are going to chew up the Huskies defense. Close game and both teams under 20 points.

Update: Landed safely. Lots of traffic. This place is beautiful. Also, if you are down here for the game, it is going to be a lot, A LOT, of fun. I of course am working. I would pay to come here to watch.

Anyhow, here we go:

Keys to the game

Stop Chris Long

Long has seven sacks and 14 hurries, and at the halfway point he is living up to his preseason All-America status. It may take some help by a tight end or running back, but Long can’t be allowed to wreck havoc. If the Huskies can neutralize him in the pass rush they will go a long way towards putting together their patented long drives.

Force Sewell to beat you

Huskies have to stop the run and force Virginia to throw the ball with Jameel Sewell. Sewell is at his best when he is playing off a solid running game. If the Huskies can bottle up the running game, it will really put the pressure on Sewell to move the Cavaliers through the air.

Stop big returns

The Huskies can’t — can’t – allow Virginia to have any big returns. On the road against an opponent that doesn’t have a lot of big play threats, it’s imperative to make them score with a long field. Starting drives at midfield or better spells disaster for the Huskies.

Thursday update pre Viginia

Big thing is health, and it looks like the Huskies are going to be okay. Donald Brown has practiced this week and his and Dixon's role will be TBD for Saturday.

Lawrence Green is the backup of Alex LaMagdelaine and could play according to Randy Edsall. But, that knee brace was one of the biggest things I have ever seen. If he can go, he can go, but I imagine it's only an emergency basis.

Mike Hicks has overtaken a healthy Dan Ryan at right tackle. It's just peculiar because Ryan won the job in camp outright over Hicks. It's all about performance however.

Also, the search for a fifth wide receiver continues with the latst candidates being Ellis Gaulden, Marcus Easely and Kevin Poles in that order. Boy, it would be nice to see Ellis out there. Got to admire his persistence with all those injuries.

It looks like Virginia's Cedric Peerman is doubtful for Saturday though the Huskies have worked out as if all three backs will see some time.

Special teams was worked on extensively the last two weeks.

I'l be back later with some thoughts.

Don't Forget the Car Care bowl

Edit for incorrectness: Of course when I read the Big East bowl lineup on the Big East website I didn't see the 2006 for Navy ONLY in the Car Care bowl. A Big East team will go there this season which means the rest of below post irrelevant.

I will keep it for posterity's sake and a reminder to read the fine print. Thanks all.

John

Watched Navy and Pittsburgh and it looks like the Meinkie Car Care Bowl in Charlotte is going to go with the Mid Shipman. They are 4-2 after beating Pitt in overtime and could be 5-1. They are going to get to seven wins and probably eight and even 9.

They get the bowl game in place of a Big East team if eligible.

That leaves 5 Big East bowls, and much like last year, six probable teams bowl eligible (everyone but Pitt and Syracuse).

6-6 isn't going to get it done for the Huskies much like Pitt failed to go last year to a bowl. UConn has to go a minimum of 7-5 to get into position for perhaps a bowl that can't fill its conference tie ins. An 8-4 record would guarantee a bowl bid at 3-4 0r 4-3 in conference.

It's too early to think about it, but that Meinike Care Bowl is gone.

On Pitt, I don't know what to say. 2 and goal from the 2 1/2 and they throw it twice down 48-45 in overtime? I don't get what's going on down there.

In Wednesday's JI

Here is a notebook on tuesday's press conference.

What's interesting when you directly ask players about respect they give you the standard "we don't care about anything outside the 4 walls"stance. But, when you dig further you can tell they want to prove to everyone else they are pretty good.

I think the players want to get credit for when they play well. So far they have not gotten that by and in large. And when you do a good job and others dismiss it, that's tough to take.

There comes a point when every human being wants credit.

As far as a Top 25 ranking, I can understand Randy Edsall's distaste of the poll and not clamoring to be ranked and not wanting to talk about it. But, if he didn't believe in its importance somewhat, why does he vote in the coaches poll?

The poll, for better or worse, is relevant. There is a disconnect here. I think a Top 25 ranking, even for a week or two, is a huge recruiting tool as is the 5-0 record that they went out last week to high schools and games. While it means nothing about what happens on the field, it's not a good thing that the Huskies are 5-0 an unranked as far as the program's perception. I too wouldn't rank them just yet, so I am not saying they should be Top 25. But I think top 25 ranking is important.

Look at Rutgers and the hype machine they have put in motion. They have pushed and pushed for their ranking and got into the top 10. They fell flat when they had to deliver the last two weeks and are now out of the poll. But, that constant mention in the top 25, and getting national distribution through the AP in Top 25 roundups is important.

When you are a Top 25 team, you get full coverage from the Associated Press and other national outlets. That means every game gets a full story and quotes (called an optional) and you get prime highlight packaging and mentions on national sports shows.

That helps with recruiting. If the Huskies are a top 25 team, you can read 4 paragraphs on their win or loss in nearly every newspaper in the country. Right now, the Huskies' game against Virginia will only get regional coverage.

UConn still has the training wheels on a bit and if they start clamoring for national attention it could come back to bite them if they aren't ready to play at that level consistently. But, even if you don't deserve the ranking, it can't hurt to get it.

A little hype and excitement never hurt anyone.

Tuesday presser

Sorry to post so late. Couldn't get to a computer.

Anyhow, got some injury updates. Randy Edsall said Donald Brown's ankle is healthy and ready to play while the team is about as rested and healed as it could hope.

Lawrence Green is back to practice, but we saw him walk into the cafeteria with a bulky leg brace and I can't think of anyway he is going to play anytime soon. Alex LaMagdelaine is the starter and has played well at left guard.

As far as other injuries, Ryan Henegan is backing up Lawrence Wilson at the WILL while Greg Lloyd is getting time at middle linebacker.

We haven't seen Aaron Bagsby since the season opener and he is now off the depth chart with a shoulder injury. Safety is thin, with frosh Kijuan Dabney the backup now.

Randy Edsall isn't laying the respect card with the Huskies. Last check, they are the only undefeated I-A team not in the top 25, but that matters little. He doesn't care.

The players want the respect a little more, but it is secondary to winning.

At some point I imagine you would want to get some credit for what your doing.

Update: A funny (at least for me) observation -- Listening to the interview tape and it is uncanny how similar Tyler Lorenzen and Randy Edsall are. Lorenzen says the exact same thing as his coach. It's like it's planned. something They their own speech writer or . They both hit the same exact buzz words every week.

I swear they have one mind.

Lorenzen has a fun personality and an awe shucks demeanor, but he is like a politician on topic and he is so disciplined and doesn't stray from the message. He plays quarterback like that too. When it isn't a football question or about next weeks game, Lorenzen is great. A topical question? He is just so careful and measured in what he says. Big contrast to Dan Davis, who should go into talk radio. Davis is careful, but he is so energetic and charming he really makes it a conversation.

Davis just likes to talk. Incredibly personable.

Anyhow, not complaining, it just strike me how similar Edsall and Lorenzen sound. They got to be reading from the same cliff notes (chances are Tyler wrote them).

Another observation. 30 minutes of questions from the media and not one question on the QB position to Edsall. What does that say about the stability of that position this year?

Big East roundup -- Cincy for real

Great game by Cincinnati tonight. Made sure I watched most of it despite the temptation to watch LSU-Florida or the MLB playoffs (I still got a flavor of both.)

That Cincinnati was able to rally tonight bodes well for the rest of the season for them. The defense was very good and opportunistic. A little worried with Mauck's penchant for throwing the ball up for grabs but I guess it works for them. Clearly No. 3 in the Big East behind USF and West Virginia. Bearcats defense can bring it. Undersized a bit, but fast and confident. They play with such swagger.

After that? While Louisville is the most disappointing team so far this season, Rutgers is next in line. I expect Rutgers to turn it around but they haven't really run the ball well in the past two weeks. Major disappointment in Piscataway tonight. They had 8 home games and only one "tough road" game of the 4. The schedule was set up for a major run this season. Two straight home losses is tough to take. Offense was just mediocre tonight. Rice had a lot of carries, but he just didn't get a lot of room. Mike Teel was hot early, but he was mistake prone in the second half. I don't feel confident that he can win me the game late. It's skewed because of the last two weeks. Brutal interception to end the game there.

The truth of the matter is that the middle of the Big East is better than it has been the last two years. I have always maintained that I feel UConn is much better than a year ago - much better.
But, that doesn't translate to wins. USF is better than a year ago as is Cincinnati. The conference is better top to bottom, though not as top heavy as it was last year.

The story of the Big East isn't Louisville's collapse (stunning) or Rutgers a touch overrated (clearly not a top 10 team, probably between 20-30), it's the improvement of USF and Cincinnati and even throw UConn in there to a lesser degree.

I don't know if the Huskies are going to get two more wins with a tough second half of the schedule. I can't tell you definitively who they are going to beat or should beat, but I think they are improved enough to pick off three more games.

Who they do it against? I don't know. But they are good enough to win as a home underdog at some point this season.

Side note: Did you hear the announcer say Connecticut at the top of the Big East standings? It was like he was surprised and saw it for the first time. Kind of funny.

I don't want to hear about UVA's scare against Middle Tennessee. As UConn's dismantling of Pitt post-Temple showed, games like that have no carryover. Just ignore the score, look at the W and then go to yardage etc. That can tell you more about the game than the score. You got to look at Virginia and UConn in all their games. They aren't as good as their best day and not as bad as their worst.

Big East thoughts

Waiting for that big Rutgers-Cincy game.

Just some thoughts as I try to semi keep track of USF-Fla Atlantic. Big East sweatin' but USF is going to hold on.

Anyhow, Louisville has officially collapsed. From top 10 team to bowl question? They would take the International Bowl in a second at this point. Fans aren't happy with Steve Kragthorpe. Warning sign against Mid Tenn. St. You got to trust what your eyes tell you regardless of competition. If the 'Ville ends 5-7 or 4-8, I won't be surprised. The team is better than its playing, but I am not sure they can pull out of the funk. It's so hard to get back on the track in college. I wonder of Brohm wishes he was playing QB in the NFL right now.

If they held on against Kentucky they probably are undefeated right now. But it's just not going well. They can't get past these loses. They are done. Syracuse is 1-5 and been non-competiitve in 5 of the losses. Only win they get is at Lousiville. Not a good sign for Cardinals. Suddenly homecoming looks winnable for the Huskies. (Who would have thought that?).

Don't have ESPNU, so can't watch the USF game. But if there is any team in the country that shouldn't overlook a Florida college football team isn't it USF? There are so many players in Florida they have to know it won't be an easy walkover. These games are always dangerous anyway. The kids on Fla International played against the USF kids in high school. They aren't scared. Can't wait to hear people claim that USF should drop a long way because they struggled with Florida International.

It's coming people, especially from those who want a one loss SEC team in the BCS title hunt (Auburn beats Florida, but loses at home to USF, but somehow Florida should still get a berth over an undefeated USF team if Florida wins the SEC championship and is a one loss team). I can hear the whining already.

If this happens, you are in for a major argument and I imagine the Gators will overtake everyone but USC in the polls if it knocks off LSU. If Boston College (who is very very good) or USF goes undefeated, they should both be in the national title game over a 1 loss SEC team.

What would college football do if USF and BC are undefeated and USC, LSU, Cal, Ohio State and Florida all have one loss? ...Just too many variables now to try and get there. We'll figure it out in three weeks.

Anyhow, we'll see which team is a fraud with Rutgers-Cincy. Not sure how good each team is. Perfect game to figure out which is legit, which is a fraud or if they are both legit or both frauds. Love these kind of games.

Random thoughts and happenings

Nice to have an off week. I think working 11 out of 13 Saturdays is a bit much. No weekend what so ever. You get so much tunnel vision covering football you forget about other things that used to be important.

I miss going to high school football games. My wife was at Windsor-New Britain, she said Windsor looked decent. She was down on New Britain though (1995 alum, I on the other hand am a St. Thomas Aquinas grad).

This week is also my favorite cross country race -- Wickham Invite. I still have nightmares when I ran at that course in high school (and no, I wasn't any good). Lot's of fun. That's the thing you would never think you would like as a sportswriter. I love covering cross country. I was covering some state meet a couple of years ago and a girl collapsed from exhaustion 10 feet from the finish line. It cost her team the state title as 20-30 other runners went by her. She tried to get up, and collapsed again. You could see her mind saying get up, and her body shut down. I never forget seeing her get up and fall right back down on her face. Painful to watch. Legs were like rubber. She crawled to the finish, touched the line, and had to have her coach come out and pull her away. Toughest athlete I ever saw.

And I can't wait to Thanksgiving and covering same meaningless high school game. I don't know what my Thursday would be without heading to some football game (Enfield-Fermi is a great game even if they only have 1 win between them).

I complained 3 times to Comcast and suddenly everyone has TBSHD. Good job if you complained. I should never have to watch a game in blurry vision mode again. Can't believe I paid for analog TV. Now, if everyone can just request FSNE in HD in Central Connecticut for Comcast then I will be happy. Gotta get those Celtic games on HD (I am a crazy hoops fan. I watched nearly very Celtics game last season on DVR. Now I won't be alone).

Enough about me:

Saw the sporting news article and the scuttlebutt about Randy Edsall to Syracuse. How silly is that? First off, coming off a pair of losing seasons, there is no way Randy Edsall is getting hired anywhere. Who gets hired off a 4-8 season unless your name is Norv Turner? Imagine the press conference, "And now, the guy who led UConn to a 4-8 2006 campaign"...the alumni would go nuts.

So Huskies go 5-0 and suddenly he is hot again? I thought he was a coach on the hot seat? National writers have no clue. You can't be a hot coach and on the hot seat at the same time. How fickle a month is. It's ridiculous.

I guess it makes sense if Edsall is really loyal to the his alma mater and this is a job he coveted for a long time. Not sure it's a better job than the one he has however. Isn't the problem with the 'Cuse facilities? You got everything you want at UConn and let's be honest, not a ton of outside pressure yet though it is starting to turn up. This is the silly part: Edsall's people? Does he have a posse are something? Who is in Edsall's entourage is talking to Syracuse? Yes, I am laughing.

Which leads me to a great point. Talked to Dahna Deleston on Tuesday and we talked about a wide range of subjects. Mostly me just fishing for future stories, but what struck me was how the team tries to ignore what's going around. They got a saying -- "Don't drink the poison."

Should be on a t-shirt.

Lastly -- CFN is predicting that bye week defeats the Huskies with a late field goal.

Monday at East Hartford Middle School

Went down to visit East Hartford Middle Schoool and talk with some players and others about the Huskies' weekly program there.

UConn send up to 20 players a week to EHMS as part of a mentoring and character development program every week. The players typically spend time in the class room with the players and talk to them about the importance of going to school and education. They also get to know the students and talk to them about the world of opportunities in front of them.

It's an off day for the players and it's a big commitment. For some players like Donnell Ford and Larry Taylor, they can relate to some of the circumstances that many of these children face. They have a lot of shared experiences and it helps that a non-authority figure can talk to the young kids. It can only help.

It's funny seeing Larry Taylor walk around with them. He is so small you can almost, I said almost, mistake him for a student. He fits right in.

Ford also is active. He helps a lot out with big brothers and big sisters in Connecticut and this type of mentoring is important to him. He is also going to try and become a fireman when he graduates in December. He already volunteered a bit this summer.

There are two things I wanted to be when I was a kid: A pro athlete or a firefighter.

Ford had the same dream. After taking his best shot at the first, Ford is doing the second.

Fireman, that's cool. Does anyone not like firemen?

Edit: ESPNU to broadcast UConn vs. Virginia. 3:30 p.m. start. Finally we know what time it is. they sure took long enough.
