Tennis is the new boxing
I may have to pay attention more. Rivalry and hate amongst the women, and cheating, taking dives and drugs with the men. What's not to like?
Following up on Nikolay Davydenko getting investigated for throwing a match in July, Davydenko was then fined for not playing well, and now drugs have crept in. Matina Hingis allegedly using cocaine? Now, ponytail man Tommy Haas was drugged in his match. Are you kidding me? I can't wait until the Pilot Pen next year.
Instead of another lame James Blake J-Block billboard it can be ---
Rivalry, Drugs, Gambling in New Haven...Aug. 22--29 at the Pilot Pen. Get your tickets now...
Sure beats --Blake is Back!
The TV commercial could have the announcer guy from the movies that also does the Geico commercials.
Gardner-Webb?
I am a big college hoops guy. I follow nearly ever conference and I would say I know more about hoops and history over anything college football related. That said, who and where is Gardner Webb from? You thought Steve Kragthorpe had a short leash. Gillespie is now on the hot seat two games in. Tubby gotta be laughing.
I thought UConn's preseason schedule was supposed to be tougher? Morgan, Buffalo and then Gardner-Webb? You just never know. BTW, after the Morgan State game I gotta say bagging Holy Cross was probably a good idea. Of course didn't watch the Morgan game because I left the office at 8, and I don't get ESPNU (had to fight off a Comcast rant).
Do you have to beat Southern by 60?
Didn't watch the game, didn't read a story on UConn women against Southern. So, of course this is uninformed, but ,118-59? I asked our women's writer Carl Adamec about it and he said there was nothing they could have done and said I have no idea what I am talking about. They had the best 11 players in the game.
Still, that's an in-state Division II team. It's an exhibition. If this game counted I would somewhat understand. Do you have to blow them out like that? It's a rhetorical question. They scored 70 in the first half, and 48 in the second, of an exhibition game. You have to want to score 118 points. I know they were fired up from the Team USA loss and they always play with intensity, but geez, can you throw SCSU a bone there?
And, I know how it feels to get blown out. I was playing for UConn-West Hartford (community college level hoops) hoops team about a decade ago and we got beat 123-50 (or maybe it was 133-50) at UConn-Avery Point. We had one practice back from school break and we all got fat. It was awful. I would say what goes around comes around, but last time I was on the winning side of a score like that I was playing JV hoops in high school.
Greenwich-Naples High School FB game
I can't wait to see this score. I have no idea if it will be close, or a Naples blowout. I can't believe it, a part of me is rooting for Greenwich to do well. Who ever roots for Greenwich in anything? It's like rooting for Microsoft normally, but I do get sick of hearing how great football is down south. They have 6,000 kids in these schools!
The tape gate scenario is hilarious. Naples came up to CT to tape Greenwich and the tapers were escorted out by state police. Naples initially refused film exchange, then got worried. Why can't you tape a game? I think Bill Belichick would fit in as a high school coach perfectly.
Imagine him facing off against Jack Cochran? I would bag the Sugar Bowl to see that midfield handshake.
Huskies in the Rose Bowl?
Unlikely, but it has a better shot than I thought. Assuming the current projections are accurate and substituting UConn for WVU, the Huskies got a shot.
Ohio State and LSU in the BCS --
Rose Bowl has to replace the No. 1 team first, and who do they pick? They could go to the Big 12, but would they pick Texas (didn't make Big 12 title game), perhaps the 4th team in the Big 12 for the game? Probably. After that the options aren't great. Doubt they would go after the Big 12 loser. Kansas as the Big 12 runner-up to the Rose?
That would stink for Kansas, because if Texas gets picked, and Oklahoma gets the auto BCS slot, Kansas could be a 1 loss team that is prevented from going to the BCS (can only take two teams from a conference in one year).
The Rose could go SEC and take Georgia (3 loss Georgia in the Rose, GREAT), they won't take a second Pac-10 team, and the other options are Hawaii and UConn.
I bet Rose takes Texas, Sugar takes Georgia (to replace LSU) and the Orange Bowl takes the Huskies in this scenario.
Let's break it down
BCS title game:
Ohio State vs. LSU
Rose Bowl
Texas (replacing Ohio State) vs. Oregon
Orange
ACC Champ vs. Connecticut
Fiesta
Oklahoma vs. Arizona St.
Sugar
Georgia (taken in place of LSU) vs. Hawaii.
In my scenario, the Orange Bowl picks between Hawaii, UConn and another at-large team. The Orange can't go into the Big 12 or SEC for an at large team and obviously two ACC schools in the bowl is kind of silly. So it's left with either a Pac-10 at large team (in the Orange?) or a Big 10 at-large (will a 3 loss Michigan be in the top 12 of the BCS?). Hawaii (undefeated and breaking through for a berth) and UConn are auto qualifiers.
If the Orange is forced into UConn, Hawaii and probably Arizona State at this juncture, I think UConn ends up in the Orange. the Fiesta will go Arizona St. if they have the chance and the Sugar will take the last team picked-- Hawaii.
Hey, a lot to to think about and it's moot if the Huskies don't keep on winning, but its fun to look. UConn could go to the Orange or Sugar Bowl, to the Sun Bowl to Meinike and even down to the dreaded International and Papajohns.com bowl if they lose their last 3.
Hey, big game this week.
Other thoughts
- This will be the best year ever on Nip/Tuck
- A-Rod should accept arbitration. $40 million is his number, and I think the Yanks would be okay with that for one year.
- Watching 3 games into the season, no one in the NBA has any idea how good Kevin Garnett really is. Celts are going to win 60 games, this guy is the best player in the NBA. I didn't know that until watching him closely. That makes what happened in Minnesota is a travesty. If they had any kind of competent management, there would be no Spurs dynasty. Garnett is going to be remembered like Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem --- as a player winning a title on his second team. Wilt did his heroics on the Philly Warriors while Kareem made his name out of college in Milwaukee. No one thinks of Wilt and Kareem as anything less than Laker greats. KG is a modern day Oscar Robertson stuck on the Cincinnati Royals before breaking out.

As both a Southern and UConn fan, while being at the game, I have to say that it just happened. A team as good as UConn has to score when they have the ball. Are you suggesting they turn it over ten times. They didn't press during the second half, he played his whole team and the typical UConn thing was to get the players to score who were off the bench. Kerns had the ball about 10 times in the last five minutes of play.
Besides it was good for SCSU. They won't fave a team as good as UConn throughout the whole season, not even in the NCAA Tournament. They will learn from this and I believe they played well and alot better than other Division I teams will even play against UConn.
It's how the game goes. You can't take it too personal. Your writer friend was right.
