Monday's JI

Here is a wrap-up of the weekend.

Got a column off the game. What struck me was how different this game was than everyone else. It's different now than it was before the UConn football team. To use a construction metaphor, the building is done. Now it's just improving.

It's all about winning now. No creating identity, no trying to compete, no showing you can play with the big boys. They are the big boys now.

I think it's important to note that just because you are in a BCS conference doesn't make you a BCS contender (see Duke, Baylor). Yo have to show yo have the ability to give it a serious run once in a while. UConn is already there --win or lose on Saturday. That's something to shed a tear about.

Also a small wrap-up notebook on Saturday's game. The lead is Edsall's buddy from Harrisburg.

Anyhow, there is internet chatter that there could be some bowl switching going on. A couple of New Jersey outlets have mentioned it and I read some in Florida.

The Big East is going to have likely four teams with nine plus wins. They got to get those teams into better bowls. And, Rutgers at 8 wins is owed one from last year. Not sure of the bowls, but it looks like the Las Vegas (against MWC champ) and the Holiday Bowl won't get their Pac-10 opponent. Root for UCLA to lose.

It's hard not to make fun of the Papajohn's.com or International Bowl, but that the Pizza and Ice Bowl could probably get an 8 win or 9 win team is a bit much. Those bowls were created for the 7 win teams. I don't think anyone expected Rutgers, USF and even UConn

It is going to take some doing, but this week will say a lot.
