On Offense
The Huskies are going to need to get QB Tyler Lorezen squared away. Lorenzen needs to be productive in the passing game – if weather permits – as he rebounds from three interceptions in a 35-3 victory over Hofstra. The return of Andre Dixon to the lineup at running back will add another change of pace to Donald Brown after a spectacular open to his season with four touchdowns. Look for Brad Kanuch to possibly see some time and get down the field.
Temple is coming off a blowout out win over Army, 35-7. Owls quarterback Adam Demichele was efficient tossing for 159 yards on 15-of-22 with two touchdown passes Bruce Francis was the top target with 45 yards on five catches while Travis Shelton had two catches for 45 yards last week. The running game is the key. Temple was putrid last year running the ball at 2.7 yards per carry. They weren’t much better against Army with 84 yards on 30 rushes, with Marquise Liverpool leading with 54 yards. Owls have speed at the skill position. What out for former UConn signee James Nixon of New Haven, who was converted to WR and the fastest player on the Owls team.
On Defense
The Huskies have the kind of defensive line that can dominate the Owls. With tackles Rob Lunn and Alex Polito they can stuff the less than stellar running game. That would open up the pass rush to Cody Brown and the rest of the defensive ends, which had seven sacks in the Huskies’ opener.
The Owls defense was the best statistically in the MAC and led the nation in redzone defense. All 11 starters return on defense and 28 letter-winners also return. Windsor DT Terrence Knighton was an All-MAC selection last year, but he is now the backup in the rotation behind Hartford’s Elisha Jospeh. Tackle Andre NeBlett also returns as the line is a strength.
Keys to the game
Stuff the run
The Huskies must make life difficult for quarterback Adam DiMichele by forcing him into long passing situations. The Owls aren’t known for a great running game, so, buf stuffing the run they can make Temple one-dimensional.
Manage the game
The rain and blustery wind is going to be a factor on Saturday. UConn QB Tyler Lorenzen has to move the chains and manage the game. No turnovers, no big risks, just crisp offense and let the defense do the rest.
Don’t let a fluke play beat you
If last year’s near-miss showed anything, the Huskies can’t let opportunities to put the Owls away pass by. UConn is still the favorite and a close game in the first quarter doesn’t bode well for Karma. The Huskies were awfully lucky last year at times, that has a way if evening out.
