Bad day for the Big East, It's top 3 teams preseason all have losess now. No national title contention for the Big East now. That's the way it goes. USF will never reach that top 2 status. They started way too down in the polls (which is a flaw of the system).
Rutgers is the most disappointing. If you are going to squawk like a top 10 team and put the hype machine in motion, have eight home games and only one major road game (Louisville), you have a schedule set up almost perfectly, then you have to beat Maryland, a middling ACC team, at home.
I certainly didn't expect Rutgers to run the table and get to the BCS title game, but I thought they would make a serious run at it. That's done now.
What I do know is that USF is the best team in the conference. I don't think that is a reach. I thought after watching them against Auburn that they would win the Big East. They then hammered State and then as I predicted defeated WVU.
Figures. They should never do top 25 polls until October. As a colleague said leading up to the WVU-USF game -- How do we know that WVU is any good? Same holds true for Rutgers. They are certainly pretty good, but are they the No. 10 team in the country? How do we know that based on their schedule?
If UConn breaks into the top 25 that is silly too. Maybe a road win at Virginia, which would make three BCS road wins, then you do it. But until they knock off a better team then you can't put the Huskies in the top 25. They are on the radar, but not there yet.
The two most impressive teams in the Big East are USF and Cincy.
I think WVU and USF are the class of the league with Rutgers, Ville and Cincy a step behind.
Humbling defeat for the Scarlet Knights and bad for the Big East. I don't want to see the Ray Rice, Slaton, White and Brian Brohm Heisman commercial anymore. That has come and gone.
BTW, The announcers on ABC are incredulous. Maryland scores a TD late and immediately the defense let Maryland score? That is embarrassing that the announcer didn't come off it. Obviously they weren't trying to let Maryland score. They were defeated and exhausted.
Anyhow, I am curious how Pitt-Virginia works out.
