Athletes send off UConn

The cheers came spontaneously from the Memorial Stadium bleachers.

The rest of the University of Connecticut athletic teams sent off the football team on Friday as it travels down to West Virginia. It's been a tough week in Storrs and the stabbing death of 20-year old cornerback Jasper Howard has hit the campus hard.

Being an athlete at UConn is like being royalty. These guys are known and loved all over campus. The rest of the athletes showed their support on Friday.

The team's lined the fence in Memorial Stadium and cheered the UConn players as they walked to the buses. The women's track team formed a 6 --Howard's number-- in the Memorial Stadium bleachers. As the team walked by, the team gave the Little Hati three-finger salute to the team. Howard did that often.

The athletes remained clapping until the final bus left. The Huskies weren't sent off to West Virginia. They may be outnumbered in Morgantown, but they will be far from alone.

Here are some photos:

Andre Dixon walks alone. There was something poetic and a little sad about this. Dixon looked forward and didn't blink.
