Quarterback
Grade: D
Comment: Tyler Lorenzen had a nightmare game throwing three interceptions on 14-of-25 passing and 184 yards in only three quarters of action. Lorenzen was indecisive and looked to force things.
Running backs
Grade: A
Comment: Donald Brown was a start with 146 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He showed the explosiveness that was missing at times last year. Robbie Fey had a touchdown run, and fullback Anthony Sherman looked to be a threat in the passing game.
Offensive line
Grade: B
Comment: Good job run blocking, but there were several holding penalties that proved costly. Gave Lorenzen enough time to throw, but Lorenzen did see pressure from time to time. Didn’t allow a sack however.
Wide receivers
Grade: B
Comment: Ellis Gaulden had four catches for 62 yards, equaling his career total for catches. Kashif Moore also added four catches and Michael Smith impressed with three for 32 yards. .
Defensive line
Comment: Was very good, with seven sacks including two from Lindsay Witten and 1½ from Cody Brown. Allowed only 40 yards net rushing.
Linebackers
Grade: B
Comment: Ho-hum game from the unit. Scott Lutrus had four tackles and an interception. Lawrence Wilson led the team with eight tackles while Greg Lloyd made no major mistakes in his debut with six tackles.
Secondary
Grade: B
Comment: Aaron Bagsby picked up his first career interception. Darius Butler and Jasper Howard were also solid.
Special Teams
Grade: B
Comment: Jasper Howard was good on punt returns, while Butler had an 85-yard TD called back. Desi Cullen solid on punts and Tony Ciaravino had no problems kicking.
Coaching
Grade: B-
Comment: Play calling got a little unbalanced in the second quarter with a 2-1 split from run to pass. Lorenzen seems at his best when he is playing fast and in the no huddle (Edsall hates it because it is limited number of plays). There was no tempo at times, especially early. Team did win 35-3 however, so this is just nitpicking and general crankiness.
