Justice?
It brings back some memories. Yellow Coat man, key to the UConn 2007 season. This is a great video. But, it looks like it is an official Temple video. WOW!
In today's JI
Also, out of football, Manchester's Matt Remillard knocked out some tomato can at the Sun last night. Sherm Cain brings the details. I like Remillard, and he was supposed to have a tough test on espn2, but his initial opponent got hurt, and the guy he was scheduled to fight backed out or something. They brought in some guy named Gonzalez on a day notice.
Only in boxing. Imagine going to a concert and expecting the Beatles and getting the Monkeys. Love the sport, but it's ridiculous sometime.

Next day
It's how you win these games that count, and I think the Huskies fell short. Two disturbing thoughts.
1. Obviously, three INTs by Tyler Lorenzen was a shocker. Also, the passing game just wasn't great. The offense outside of Donald Brown was pedestrian. If you can't throw it deep against Hofstra, who can you throw it against?
2. Defense had some good numbers, bu the time of possession and the penchant for losing contain on third and long remained. Bend but not break is not an option this year, it should be "stand firm."
I don't think the Huskies found out anything about themselves on Thursday night.
Be back at 4 p.,m for the Huskies day after teleconference.
Also, a Phil Chardis column and a notebook.

Live Blogging Hofstra
Update 7:40: Darius Butler 85 yard TD return negated by penalty. WOW. Penalty, but still wow. Are you kidding me?
Update7:43 p.m: Butler's TD is returned, a three in out by UConn, then a muffed punt. Donald Brown goes in from a yard for a TF. 7-0 UConn, 1:54 in.
Update 8:01: Scott Lutrus INT. Brown carrying the team. 8 rushes 58 yards 2 tds. Nice night already.
1st quarter wrap: Not a crisp first quarter. UConn up 14-0, but the passing game doesn't look in synch. Also, two touchdowns called back because of holding. Another holding penalty hurt a big gain and a costly late hit. UConn is going to win big, but a little sloppy to open the game despite the score. Brown 86 yards on 14 carries in the first quarter! Should have 3TDs and maybe even more than that.
Second quarter
Update 8:34: UConn defense giving up too many third and long conversions. Have to get more of a pass rush. Passing game needs to get in gear. Not crisp at all.
Update 8:46: The passing game looks awful. Riding Brown, 18 carries in only the first half. There you go! Kashif Moore first college catch. Donald Brown 19 yard TD. Hey, Donald Brown is a pretty good back. 19 carries, 128 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the first half. Should have 4. 21-0 UConn.
Update 8:58 pm: Donald Brown his 4th TD of the half. 20 carries, 130 yards. Yeah, that's a workhorse back. 28-0 UConn.
Third quarter
Update 9:40: Lorenzen INT in the endzone. Awful pass, making poor decisions. He has two interceptions tonight, six of all last year. Defense stiffens in the redzone, and the Huskies lead 28-3.
WOW! Lorenzen another INT. He had Gaulden open on the right side, wide open, and threw a pick. That's three interceptions. Not inspiring much confidence.
Update 9: 50 pm.: Cody Endres warming up on sidelines.
Fourth quarter
Update 10:10 p.m.: Lorenzen 14-of-25 for 184 yards and 3 INTs. He was pulled in the fourth quarter for Cody Endres. Could have been performance, could have been score. Not very encouraging. Robbie Frey got his first career TD.
Brown was good rest of the offense was ho-hum. Defensive line was good, but still lost contain on scrambles.
Will wrap-up very late.
Pre game
Anyhow, it's nice to be back covering games. It seems like yesterday we were in Charlotte.
What to expect tonight? I imagine a UConn blowout. Anything less and I think it's a worrisome sign. Huskies are bigger, strong and more physical. Hofstra has some good players, but its FCS. Not overlooking the Pride, just relaying the truth.
Some other notes. This is Hofstra coach David Cohen's third year as opposed to my error in some stories I wrote (can't remember which publication) when I said it was his first year. The media notes and the Hofstra website are confusing in this regard. Some others made the same mistake too, so I am not a total dunce.
Prediction Time
Game: Huskies 35, Hofstra 7
Season: 8-4, 4-3 Big East, Papajohns.com bowl.
I am starting a new feature. As many of you know, the Huskies aren't the most imaginative team on special teams. I can't remember the last time I saw a fake punt or field goal. This goes back to the Division I era. I heard a rumor they tried one some years back and it didn't go well.
Odds of seeing a fake punt or field goal tonight: 1000-1.
Last thing is, it's weird sitting here and not having Randy Smith next to me. I am half expecting Smith to walk in here, put his arm around me, and ask me if the Pups are any good or if they are going to stink this year. Then, he would have spent the next two hours talking about how much cash he lost at the Travelers and women's basketball. He would have loved the Delle Done story. A colleague of mine with the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance, Hal Levy, will also be missed. He was a regular at these games.
I'll miss both of them...
Edit 6:50 p.m.: Skimming the roster, no Corey Stringer. He transferred to Stony Brook some time last week. Well, there goes your linebacker depth. Stringer was a hybrid safety/linebacker. He was nowhere near the depth chart.
Also, Zach Frazer is the backup quarterback today. No or next to him and Cody Endres.
Update 7:18 pm: As always a late arriving crowd. About 1/3 full. I guess there is a good reason. I haven't heard the reason why yet however. I have never seen this stadium filled before kickoff.
Update 7:27 p.m.: QB Bryan Savage is out. Some guy named Cory Christopher is in. So much for the one paragraph in my advance. LOL.
Keys to the Hofstra game
Huskies open against Hofstra 7:30 p.m. at Rentschler Field.
Inside the numbers:
UConn coach Randy Edsall's career record is 50-55.
UConn is 6-0 since moving to football's top Division against the old I-AA teams.
UConn has out scored FCS teams 297-52 .
UConn has a 5-game winning streak in season openers, tied for eighth longest in the nation.
UConn has won seven straight home openers.
Remember, live blogging tonight. It's always good to get analysis in real time when you get back home.
Keys to the Hofstra game
Unleash the passing game
Winning comes first, but UConn should go to its passing game early getting Kashif Moore and Ellis Gaulden involved. Rhythm and tempo are important and getting the passing game started will get everyone off on the right foot.
Flex your muscles
UConn is bigger and much stronger on the offensive and defensive lines. The lines have to be physical and punish the smaller Pride players. The more they wear down Hofstra the chance of an upset diminishes. UConn has nearly 60 pounds per player advantage on the offensive line vs. the smaller Pride defensive line.
Don’t let the Pride linger
UConn is 6-0 against FCS schools since making the move up to Division I and the games haven’t been close with UConn 297-52. The Huskies have to score early and often to take the fight out of the Pride. Letting teams hang around that you should beat gives the underdog confidence, and a close game opens up the door for a fluke.

Calm before the storm

Taking care of some advance stuff for the big game (is any game ever small?) . The JIs preview section is out today, stories aren't up online, but if you are in JI area it's well worth the purchase on cover design and photos alone.
A thanks to Tyler Lorenzen for co-operating with the photo shoot. We have a story about him interning at Merrill Lynch this summer and he was gracious enough to get in a suit for the shoot. Of course, he then promptly put on his pads and full uniform and what we got is a split screen shot of Lorenzen. (Think NBA finals split screen).
It's a great cover. If I can get something electronic I will post it. Most newspapers in the country aren't doing special sections anymore and I am not sure how long we are going to be able to do it too. I was happy to put up with the hassle and extra work. Newspapers are indeed dying (the delivery device, not the actual role or need of the product we create), but the way it looks you can't really recreate online with linking to text. It's a shame these things have gone the way of the type writer. The packaging enhances the information.
Lastly, a big happy 5-0 to UConn coach Randy Edsall. He turns 50 today.
Edit: Here is the JIs cover.

Thursday update (On Tuesday of course)
Andre Dixon hurt an ankle (don't know which one) and will likely miss Thursday's game against Hofstra. In his place, Robbie Frey will get the backup carries to Donald Brown.
Also, Jordan Todman and Brad Kanuch are getting closer, but probably won't play Thursday. Todman is in pads, but no contact.
Lastly, Aaron Bagsby is back at full-speed and is a candidate to play on special teams and perhaps see some action on Thursday.
That's about it, let me make some money and be back with some thoughts.
Update: About 5,000 seats are left for Thursday's opener. The season ticket base is 28,000 with the student allotment of about 4,700 also sold out. There are a lot of weekday and night games this year. If this was Saturday at noon there would be probably be a sellout for every game.

Where is the linebacker depth?
Where are all the linebackers?
I love Lutrus and Wilson, and I am sure Lloyd is a talent, but the dearth of depth at linebacker truly astounds me. I must say, I didn't see this one coming. C.J. Marck has a big rep but hasn't played a down. Aaron Bryant is a walk-on and Greg Robinson is limited. It's so shallow that Kijuan Dabney was moved from safety (which has its own depth problems, but at least has answers on the roster.).
On the offensive and defensive lines there is depth. Quarterback has depth, running back is loaded and when healthy, the secondary has depth. But, linebacker has some major top talent, but a very shallow underbelly.
Here is a note: Matt Ashmead is the only scholarship linebacker that is a junior or older (I think he has earned a schollie? Right?). It's a stunning lack of depth considering defensive linemen are tougher to find and they have depth there (at least at defensive end).
It just goes to show you, this team for all its returning starters is still very young.
Two days until the season opener.
In today's JI
We have deadlines at 10 a.m. Best time to check for any JI story is at about 11 a.m. That's the way it goes in the afternoon. We'll have more this week and of course the preview section on Wednesday.
See you soon.

UConn has come a long way
Connecticut, inspired by its first post-season appearance in school history last year, began its final season in Division I-AA tonight with a new coach and dreams of future success in Division I-A.
But the Huskies showed they are not ready for the big time just yet. Hofstra, which is in Division I-AA, was sparked by three touchdown passes from Giovanni Carmazzi and two defensive touchdowns by Robert Thomas to defeat UConn, 56-17, before a record crowd of 9,381 at Hofstra Stadium.
Working weekend Part 2 -- Sunday Presser
Anyhow, Hofstra.
Randy Edsall took out every cliche and platitude in the book for this one. And, I mean every single cliche and talking point:
"We want to win a Big East championship. We want to win one game at a time, and really focus on that. Last week doesn't matter this week....Be best we can be.”
Then he brought up the "they all count and this one is as important as any other" (don't think this is a fan storm the field game, is it?). It reminded me a bit of Bull Durham when Nuke LaLoosh finally makes it to the Major Leagues.
I will give Edsall a bit of slack since he has been great for all of fall camp. Besides, what is he supposed to say? "We should beat Hofstra by 40 points and be unchallenged?" That would be refreshing.
Imagine if Joe Biden was a football coach?
Coach Biden: "Us lose to Hofstra? Oh come on, that is malarkey. Absolute malarkey! If we lose to Hofstra we should be looking for another job."
Football coaches aren't on the straight talk express. Especially when they are playing opponents they are expected to blow out. It happens to every fall to football coaches all over this country. Try interviewing a high school football coach. After the cliche fest however there was some good stuff.
While I hope Sunday presser's never happen again, the brunch was thoroughly enjoyable. It was french toast, sausage and pancakes that had me longing back to my college days. Nothing like falling out of your dorm bed Sunday morning (after a night of intense studying) in West Campus and making the trip over to McMahon dining hall for all you can eat lunch. Back to football.
- Injuries: Jordan Todman and Brad Kanuch are unlikely to play (no surprise).
- Safety Aaron Bagsby has returned to practice and Jerome Junior won't need surgery. Both have knee issues. That should help safety depth that Edsall admitted is much thinner than he anticipated. Jon Jean-Louis has a hip flexor and because of the chronic ankle injury to Greg Robinson, Kijuan Dabney is hedging positions and playing outside linebacker. The starting lineup is stacked, but if Dahna Deleston and/or Robert Vaughn go down it's pretty thin. Glenn Mourning, who hasn't sniffed playing time in his career, and walk-on Emmanuel Omokaro at the backups. The sooner Bagsby gets back the better this situation will be. I know they like Greg Lloyd in the middle, but considering the injuries and the way this has played out, I wonder if how the lack of anticipated depth at safety led to Deleston moving back from linebacker (Bagsby was hurt in the summer just prior to camp).
- Edsall mentioned he thought his team ran out of gas at the end of last year. He took that into account and learned for that. He wouldn't say how they are doing things this year, but without a doubt he did wonder what happened in the final 1/4 of the season.
- Rob Lunn gave his Big East championship ring to his father and his Meinieke Car Care Bowl ring to his grandfather.
- As I said yesterday, I like the vibe of this team.

Working the weekend
Back to football.
What's not to like? There is very little to worry about on the depth chart. The receivers are a worry, but the staff knows what it has. QB isn't a worry, Tyler Lorenzen is solid and can manage the game. There are some deficient areas like the passing game, but unlike last year when they trotted Lorenzen out for the Duke game, they don't have their fingers crossed. There is a good sense about what the offense, defense and special teams are capable of.
Nothing keeps a coach up at night more than "I don't know."
This team knows its talent, its strengths and weaknesses and there isn't a position you send out there where you have to hold your breath.
In that sense, it's much easier to relax. They are a known quantity.
A close game, or god forbid, a loss to Hofstra next Thursday and you will see this thing get ugly real quick.
Right now, five days before Hofstra, I like the way it feels.

Was D.J. demoted?
Talking to D.J. after practice it's certain that he didn't think he wasn't beat out for a job. It was a pretty icy exchange. When he was showed the depth chart he said he had no idea what it was.
Hernandez is best used in the slot, the W, while Kashif Moore and Ellis Gaulden are the X and Y receivers. So, is D.J. a starter or not?
Of course he is. The Huskies use three receivers much of the time depending on the packages and the game plan. Hernandez sees much more time than fullback Anthony Sherman. The notion that he was beaten out for the starting spot by Moore is a bit nitpicking. Moore is more suited for the X and is a deep threat. Hernandez could certainly play the X, but he is more suited for the slot where he can work intermediate routes and exploit mismatches against linebackers and safeties. That was always his job and position.
Hernandez's position is no different than last year. I don't think that was a surprise looking back on it.
If the Huskies go with two tight ends and a fullback set with one wide receiver, then does that mean Ellis Gaulden and D. J Hernandez were benched? No. It's a question of package.
If Brad Kanuch comes back and beats out Moore for the X spot, D.J. Hernandez stays put at the W, or slot. Moore isn't going to move into Hernandez's position in the slot. Right now, with Kanuch out, if Moore gets hurt D.J. moves to the X and Michael Smith moves into the slot.
D.J. Hernandez is the starting slot receiver whenever that package is used. Same position as last year. He wasn't competing with Moore for the X because his skills are better suited in the slot.
If Brad Kanuch comes back and he bumps Hernandez out of the slot down to the No. 4 receiver, then that is a real demotion. I am not sure how much time Hernandez even spent competing with Moore for the X receiver considering the dearth of candidates.
Hernandez right now is the backup at the X, and starter at the W, which means heavy action in the Huskies offense.
For purposes of those who like a clean depth chart, there are perhaps 13-15 positions that can be considered first team. Fullback, 3rd and 4th wide receivers, and the second tight end are all technically starters.
You need 4 receivers, 2 tight ends and a fullback as part of your base package. That's your first team offense folks.

Depth chart unveiled
Here are some worthy nuggets:
* Wide receivers are Ellis Gualden, Kashif Moore and D.J. Hernandez. Of course, on the depth chart it lists D.J. as the backup to Kashif, and when asked about the "demotion" Hernandez was puzzled. He had no idea what anyone was talking about and when he looked at the chart said that he is in the slot and is a "starter." Makes sense, that's where he is most effective. A bit uncomfortable for about 5 minutes. Thought we were breaking it to D.J. that he was benched.
* Mike Hicks beat out Dan Ryan for right tackle. Mike Ryan to backup at RT. Dan Ryan backs up Will Beatty at LT.
* Jasper Howard starting corner opposite Darius Butler and a pair of local guys, Emmanuel Omakaro and Glenn Mourning are backups at safety. Nothing ground breaking.
* Twyon Martin and Kendall Reyes are backups at DT. Marcus Campbell joins Lindsey Witten as a backup at DE.
* RB Jordan Todman was riding a bicycle most of practice. Return is week-to-week. WR Brad Kanuch had his helmet on today, but still didn't practice but did work out. It's progress people, progress.

Big week ahead
Anyhow final scrimmage was held today at Rentschler, the best vs. the best. The staff should have a working depth chart for Wednesday. The team will begin game planning for Hofstra starting on Thursday.
Some random thoughts:
1. Is Brad Kanuch ever going to see the field? Last action he had was in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. They need him at receiver. But, if he can't be effective and is slowed by injuries, perhaps getting him that redshirt year he should have gotten his freshman year wouldn't be a bad idea. Just thinking out loud.
2. If Jordan Todman is going to miss any significant amount of time with the shoulder injury, he may be headed for a redshirt too. Any time a true frosh gets injured it's a serious question to ask. If the player can't be effective, why even play them if you can get a redshirt in? I think this team needs Todman though. We'll find out more soon enough. Not surprised bu the injury, I wasn't at practice Saturday, but I know Robert Vaughn hits like a truck.
2. Saw the AP Top 25. Not many surprises, though Pittsburgh was ranked No. 25 (hitting head against wall). Don't get me wrong, I think the Panthers are going to be improved this year and may very well live up the hype, BUT, you have to show me first. Coming off the last two years they had don't you think they should win a game before getting votes? Get an impressive win or two under the belt first. And, I have quarterback concerns with them. Pitt has had two straight terrible seasons, and now they are the trendy pick? I don't get it.
3. Love Poll Stalker. Everything in life should be this transparent. I call for the coaches poll to open up too, especially since that has more of an impact (AP asked out of the computer rankings as a matter of ethics) nationwide.
4. Imagine Jamaican sprinter Usain "Lightning" Bolt at wide receiver? 6-foot-4 and can run the 100 in 9.69! I can't fathom that type of speed, height and athleticism. It's Plaxico Burress height combined with the fastest man who has ever lived. The "fastest man who ever lived" is perhaps the coolest title on earth.
5. On Jamaica, looking at the sprinters and athletes, I wonder where is the enterprising college coach who is going to recruit those sprinters at 17 and 18 and try to get them to play football? That's an off the radar way to get big-time speed. If one of those guys showed up and ran 10.4 they would be begged to come on the football team. UConn's Gerrard Sheppard played one year of high school, it can be done. No coach turns down that type of athleticism. Get the sprinter to a prep school, redshirt him a year, and then take your chances. It's at least worth a try. Hoops is worldwide in recruiting, football should be too. You can mold athletes. If I am a football coach I would take a shot at them.
6. Watching Giants-Browns, 30-3 a minute or two into the second quarter. That's a Tecmo Bowl score. The Browns look like the worst team in the NFL, and Dominick Hixon has 3 touchdowns in a quarter. That is a fantasy MVP type numbers and it doesn't count. Way to waste it guy. Brown's QB Derek Anderson got destroyed by Osi Umenyiora. Makes you wonder why they are even playing this preseason game. Money, money, money...

Media Guide invasion
It's been a nonstop invasion. My wife has put her foot down. I get to open them up, take cursory glance, and then off to the recycle bin. They are taking over my house. I am waiting on some freelance checks and I think the mailman stole them out of spite. These things come in droves it's borderline obnoxious.
When I started on the beat it was cool to get all these things, but now I have no place to put them. I joined the FWAA (Football Writers' Association of America) last year and half of the colleges in America that do national mailings send guides to my home. Why? I don't know, but perhaps on the west coast (I have the Oregon State and Washington guides) they got the wrong address from the FWAA. All of this should be going to the JI. I only get half of them there. So now, for the rest of my life, I will be getting media guides at my home. How could I possibly stop them all?
I actually got a guide addressed to Kelby Silver. I will have to thank Washington for that one. I am going to name my second child Kelby (no, one is not on the way). I am not even sure that is a real name. Maybe on the West Coast it is. Parent couldn't decide between Colby and Kelly and decided to combine them. Makes perfect sense.
I have received at least 10 media guides in the last week. At work, there is about another 10, maybe more.
These things got so out of hand a couple of years ago the NCAA had to regulate them. The books are 210 pages or so and maximum and are required to be black and white throughout with the back and front covers allowed to be color. Yes, that is an NCAA regulation.
Of course these are disguised recruiting guides, which are not allowed, so it's 210 pages and flat out beautiful. Not one guide is made to be a functional working document for the media. The NCAA allows a supplement, that has to be on copy paper, that is distributed to the media. No, I am not making this up.
If they all are required to have the same format they should all look the same, right? Of course football coaches found out how to bend the rules and destroy the purpose of the rule in the first place. Pages can't be messed with so certain schools go with much glossier paper and fancy designs.
Tennessee's guide is the winner this year for sharpest layout. It opens up like a picture book. How about Texas A&M? It is a hard cover book, yes HARD COVER (as is Louisville) and has the logo embossed in the paper. You can't find a finer book. It doesn't belong in a media bag, it belongs on a nice coffee table next to an Ansel Adams portfolio. Don't try to find last year's stats or school record book in them, those have been eliminated for the glossy photos of the football fields and pictures of trophies.
These things go for about $20 a pop to purchase. I am probably sitting on $2,000 worth of media guides at the office. That's probably what I would pay to haul them away. I did thumb through Notre Dame and will keep it (Page 44, 2009 schedule -- Nov. 21 Connecticut).
I am drowning in media guides.
Of course, when I needed a UConn one last week to write at home it was nowhere to be found. I have six of them in the office. Figures.

Today's JI
I was impressed with Gaulden's practice Tuesday. He isn't going to turn into an all-conference guy, but he showed ability and at his height and athleticism, is perhaps the team's only option. I think the kid can play and he is going to get time on the field. Now, if only Brad Kanuch would get healthy.
Other semi-big news is potentially pro football coming to Hartford. By the reaction I have gotten from Northland (very tight-lipped), I imagine they aren't too happy with the UFL commissioner right now. The entire league has flown under the radar since failing in its attempt at starting up for the 2008 season. The league has a long way to go.
Several problems. Of the six teams, only the potential New York franchise is close to Hartford. And, how do you run a league with six teams? 10 games and then a 4-team playoff? The league has to be at least 10 in my opinion, preferably 12 with a 4 team playoff of division winners.
I just don't see it working in Hartford for a number of reasons. The only way for it to succeed is to siphon off UConn football fans.
The cat came out of the bag early on this, way too early and clumsily. It puts Northland in a bad spot because they aren't ready to talk logistics and expectations.
I am skeptical of the league anyway. I don't think there is a market for another major pro football league. In most areas that lack an NFL team there is a strong college presence. LA is major USC country.Orlando has UCF and two teams within a days drive in Tampa and Jacksonville of the NFL. LA has USC.
San Francisco and New York have NFL franchises. Las Vegas doesn't need any more entertainment.
It seems every decade or so very smart people throw a lot of money thinking that there is a market for something that isn't there. I don't know what marketing data they look at, but I am not sure I believe it.
For most of the country the ways are set: Friday is high school, Saturday college and Sunday NFL.
Any deviation from that is doomed to failure.

Pro team in Hartford?
It was stressed that this is in the preliminary stages, extremely preliminary.
Here is a statment from Northland Investment Co. (which manages Rentschler Field and the XL Center):
Northland Investment Corporation has been negotiating for the acquisition
of a United Football League franchise.
We are excited about the new league's prospects and will continue to explore
Northland's potential involvement in the UFL.
Due to the confidential nature of the negotiations, at this time, none of
the stakeholders involved in Rentchler Field have been included in the
discussions. It is not certain whether the franchise will be Hartford based
and it is entirely premature to state that the team will be playing at
Rentchler Field.
Quick hits
Randy Edsall wanted to see some of the other guys and I thought Zach Frazer, Cody Endres and Casey Turner each had their moments. Endres is getting better, you can see him stepping into the throw and being more accurate. He is also slimmer and much more mobile than he was a year ago.
Zach Frazer is likely the No. 2, but Endres does have ability. Saw Casey Turner for the first time. Tall player and he is kind of slow with the delivery, but he throws a nice tight ball. He generally looked good.
Now to the wide receivers: Ellis Gaulden had a big practice. Sixth year senior, maybe there is a good story here. Ellis wants to prove he is "not Mr. Glass." I have used that sometimes, hope he didn't get that from here.
He looked like a threat out there today. Good strength, can get separation, and he can turn it up field. He is healthy and his legs are under him.
Love this quote: "This is my year. My year to do what I have to do and prove to everyone that I am not Mr. Glass." He meant it.
Bad sign: Brad Kanuch in shorts.
Injury report: In addition to Kanuch, Lindsay Witten sat out (should be back tomorrow), as did Greg Robinson (new nickname is Plaxico cause he doesn't practice). Saw Mike Cox, not coming back soon, and Aaron Bagsby (not coming back soon). Also, Jerome Junior was on crutches and with a bulky knee brace (left knee I think, will check notes later). I don't think he is going to play this year (I like to be conservative).
Other observations:
* Jasper Howard is a bit ahead of Reggie McClain as the other corner based on coverage ability.
* Dan Ryan and Mike Hicks are locked in a battle to the death at right tackle. Edsall quote: "If only we could combine them."
*Robert Vaughn is a big hitter at safety. He made a couple of bone crunching hits. Gaulden took one and the entire place cringed. Gaulden of course got right back up.
*Open practice for fans on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at Memorial Stadium.
Time to pay the bills and then get some sleep. Had a small side on Jordan Todman today in the JI .
Later,
John

Quick hits
1. Tyler Lorenzen back with the first team for most of yesterday's scrimmage.
2. Michael Smith is on the two-deep now at wide receiver. Look for a story in Saturday's JI on Smith. Smith and running back Jordan Todman are the two players who will see time as a true frosh right now.
3. Todman is EXPLOSIVE (not my term but another players). Randy Edsall doesn't want to put the cart before the horse (after all, only eight practices), but he does add a dimmension this team has lacked. Todman is No. 5 on the depth chart at running back, but his skills are so unique they may put in some packages for him. He will be a punt returner/kick returner. Running back is loaded.
4. Cody Brown is hilarious. He tried to get Darius Butler to laugh during an interview making fun of Butler by continuing to scratch his upper lip (Butler always scratches his lip while being interviewed). He made Donald Brown wear a cone on his head while doing an interview.
Gotta pay the bills,
Take care,
John

Wide receiver thoughts
Since Tuesday, wide receivers have been on my mind.
I will be the first to admit that it's impossible to make assumptions from a two hour practice, but the one thing that is bugging about this team is wide receiver. I don't see it getting much better than last year. In fact, with the loss of Terrence Jeffers, I see it regressing a bit. The top two receivers are converted from running back, Brad Kanuch, and quarterback, D.J. Hernandez.
Seeing Kanuch with wrap around his leg is disconcerting. Who knows if he will ever get 100 percent. Hernandez has turned into a decent possession receiver, but he isn't the kind of burner the team is looking for. Hernandez helps, but I am not expecting 7 catches a game. Kanuch last year had one touchdown catch.
Darius Butler? We'll see, he certainly has the explosion, but he has to be a secondary player and luxury, not a necessity. Flat out, they have to be able to pass the ball without Darius Butler. If they can't, then that is a problem.
That leaves Kashif Moore, who Randy Edsall said needs to use his athleticism and be "football fast" and a whole bunch of no ideas. Kevin Poles last received positive attention as a true frosh. Isiah Moore? Not sure he can help, as I am also not sure Marcus Easley and the walk-on brigade will provide much.
It's going to come down to the true frosh's, and that is a dangerous game. Gerrard Sheppard caught my eye just because he looks like a tremendous athlete. He has one year of high school football under his belt however. That is the definition of project. How can you ask him to be a consistent performer?
Brian Parker has nice size too. Didn't notice Michael Smith. Slim pickings indeed. UConn better hope at least one of those guys pans out.
The best receiver may end up being Andre Dixon out of the backfield. Love Jordan Todman and even Robbie Frey catching the ball out of the backfield. Todman is an electrifying player. Catch a drift?
The best offensive players on the team are all running backs. If I had to rank them, Brown, Dixon and then Todman would be my top threats. I like having Dixon in the game and if he lines up in the slot could make some plays. Martin Bedard and Steve Brouse are nice targets at tight end.
If the Huskies are going to win they aren't going to do it throwing the ball all over the field. They don't have the QB for it, and even if they did, not sure there are enough options at receiver. Don't want to be an alarmist, but the spring wasn't good on the wide receiver unit and they didn't look good on Tuesday.
Random thought: What do you think about getting Zach Frazer one or two series a game? If Frazer can get the ball deep (assuming someone can get down the field even remotely open) then why not? Quarterback tandems work best when the second QB coming in is different. Just a thought.
I like the idea and will take credit for it if it works. If it doesn't work? I'll blame Edsall for messing with chemistry.
Off topic: Working a lot on the desk a lot this summer and at a PM paper that means the deadline is around 10 a.m. To work the desk, I come in a couple of times a week at 3:30 a.m. (not a typo).
One thing I have learned -- there are so many weird people on the radio that late. The FAN is silly, and I have started listening to this thing called coast to coast on 1080. They talk about shadow people (don't ask), spirits and ghosts. Today some psychic women called in and wants to get the voices out of her head. The "expert" recommended she sleep low to the ground and not sleep with metal. The women is in a wheelchair. She was crying her eyes out. I was scared out of my mind. No one is up at 3:30 a.m. I started looking for shadow people. Who gets scared from the radio on the way to work? Not a great feeling to start the day.
From now on, its 1410 on the way in.
Cost of Gas: I figured it out, $15 a day to get to work and back on gas. OUCH!

My take on the Zach Frazer first-team? A bit of a dog and pony show. Tyler Lorenzen never looks great in practice. Until further notice, I think Randy Edsall was just trying to send a message. Zach Frazer did look pretty good at times and has a good arm.
On the other hand, the wide receivers for the Huskies dropped a ton of balls. It is early, but the unit has a long way to go. Got a feeling Edsall is going to give Kanuch the Ryan Henegan silent treatment soon.
This year Edsall does have options however and if Lorenzen doesn't get the job done, Frazer is likely to get a shot sooner rather than later. One thing is sure, Frazer is dying to play.

On a tight schedule here and just some notables.
1. Zach Frazer took a lot of snaps with the first team as Tyler Lorenzen drew the ire of Edsall with some poor throws. Is the QB job open? Technically, all jobs are open. Is this a shot across the bow for Lorenzen to wake up? Absolutely. The season is going to hinge on the passing attack. It has to be productive.
2. Brad Kanuch sat out with a wrap around his left leg. Coach Randy Edsall said it was possibly his hamstring. When I asked if it was a re-occurrence of the quad injury Randy said he didn’t think so since the quad is in the front of the leg and the hamstring was in the back. Hey, I write for a living give me a break. The wide receiver corps dropped a lot of balls. stood out. Ellis Gaulden was out there. Weird not seeing him on crutches.
3. Jordan Todman was cleared of all charges for his May arrest at his senior prom at Dartmouth High in Dartmouth, Mass. Todman and his date were detained at the prom after alcohol was found on a privately chartered bus and there was an incident when they were refused entry into the prom. According to the Standard-Times, the charges were dropped in pre-trial because there was no probable cause to arrest Todman.
4. Congratulations are in order for soon to be ex-UConn football SID Leigh Torbin. Leigh is headed to
Will have more later.
