Edsall in The Day:
"There has been speculation in various media outlets that I am a candidate for the job," Edsall told The Day this morning. "But with all due respect to my alma mater and the people at Syracuse, I am not interested in being a candidate.
"I just want to continue to coach at the University of Connecticut and prepare my team for this week's game against South Florida and the rest of our 2008 schedule. I don't want this to become a distraction to my players or coaching staff as we move forward."
There you have it folks. Can't be any more clear. That should end all the speculation. Don't know what Edsall let it fester for less than a day (perhaps because it happened so quick, he didn't have a chance to think. He said he didn't know until told on the conference call. Fair enough. It's hard to comment in real time.)
UConn officially won't comment. I requested to talk to Jeff Hathaway about this and the university won't comment on personnel issues.
The Big East would probably frown on a move like this anyway. You don't strengthen one program by weakening another.
One thing is clear however, Edsall is staying. I don't think you will have a Nick Saban's situation he goes to Cuse in 3 weeks.
