Final thoughts on bowls

Just some random thoughts and tidbits.

* Anyone looking at bowl payout is mistaking how the Big East pays it's members. There is revenue sharing. Cincinnati will keep a portion of the BCS game for itself, but after that all the other money is pooled and divided. So, whatever the payout of the Papajohns.com Bowl is this year it is sent into the Big East and divided by 8 and distributed. So, bowl payout is not a factor in which bowl is better.

*The pecking order in the Big East is not linear. Rutgers wasn't picked sixth and went to St. Pete. International Bowl didn't have the No. 4 pick. The 4-5-6 in the Big East are negotiated as a group. Now, there is a pecking order of games, and St. Pete is last, but they kind of work together and get the right teams to the right games if possible.

*That said, the Yankee Bowl next year is going to be a welcome addition. The crux of the problems this year for the Big East is the fact UConn and Rutgers already went to Toronto, and sending USF there is asinine. Don't get me wrong, the Bulls are lucky they are in a game when you figure how they ended the season, but the Yankee Bowl as the NO. 4 in the lineup followed by an SEC possible in St. Pete is a much more palatable 4-5-6. Actually, I like the thought of the Yankee Bowl. I hope they eventually get it as a New Year's Eve game in the next bowl cycle. Now with Rutgers and UConn at a competent FBS level, that game is very attractive.

*How happy is the Big East to get out of the Gator Bowl? Sure, it's prestigious but for how long? I don't thing the Big 10 and Big 12 will settle for the Gator's shenanigans. What that bowl has done in recent years has destroyed the brand. They took West Virginia 4 of the last 7 years. They did take Louisville once, though they had nowhere else to go.

This conference had no interest in being an honest partner in the bowl process and never had an open mind during this current cycle with the Big East. What they did to the ACC this year is even worse. FSU at 6-6? This is the worst bowl game of the entire lineup and I think the Gator Bowl is the poster boy on what's wrong with the bowl system. I hope the Big 12 vs. Big 10 matchup works out. The Big East can't work with a bowl that doesn't want to consider six of the eight members of the conference.

*That leads me to another problem. The league needs to expand to provide great variation for bowl teams. Who? That's another 10,000 words. But as of right now, USF has in five years been to every single bowl tie except a BCS game. UConn has been to 3 of the 5 and if they don't win it next year, are they now doomed to St. Pete or the Yankee Bowl next year? There has to be more variation in the bowls. The Big East should have more swap options available with other bowls to prevent USF, UConn or Rutgers going back to places again and again. It's a problem. If the Big East is a 10 team conference with 8 bowl tie ins, then that's a lot of variety. The Sun Bowl didn't want to be Big East No. 3 for that reason. They didn't see variety.

Champs Sports next year (if ND doesn't take it) and the Yankee Bowl will be bring improvements. Especially, if an SEC team qualifies again down in Birmingham.

*Lastly, fan bases have to stop claiming that they should get a bowl game because they travel well. It's just uncouth. That's like saying I have so much money I don't need to wait in line. It really is that obnoxious.

Isn't the "We travel well therfore we deserve......" because that's what the bowls consider in determining who the choose?

At least in part.

ND can't take Big East's Champ Bowl bid. They can take the Big 12 bid I beleieve

I hope that next year the Papa John's bowl moves to Atlanta. The BE surely could find a date before the Chick-Fil-A Bowl to do it. What tie does Papa John's have to Birmingham anyway? Its headquarters is in KY, not AL.

ND can take the Big East's Champs bid once in a 4 year period. The Yankee Bowl Notre Dame tie is there in case Notre Dame isn't in a bigger bowl and there is no Big 12 team in NYC. IN that case, ND would play in the Yankee Bowl.

So, if ND is 7-5, 6-6, and doesn't get Champs or something like the Cotton Bowl, then they have a tie in to a bowl.

It works for all parties.

As far as "We travel therefore we deserve..." first thing you have to do is win. Win first, the travel.

I knew I read it somewhere about the big 12. Got Yankee and champs confused.
