Here we go

So, it begins this week. I am back from an extended vacation and it's going to be a long season. You know what? It's about time. I can smell football season and the sausage at your tailgates.

I have read enough books (highly recommend The Angels Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon), covered enough high school games, and played enough golf (not really). Why isn't football year round? This summer has been so dreary I can't wait to get started with work.

Anyhow, Big East Media Day in Newport is the best media day in the business and I am interested to see what El Jefe John Marinatto has to say on Tuesday. There has been a lot of bowl negotiations going on and this is an important time for the Big East.

As far as the Huskies, despite covering the team for the last three years, I am not entirely sure what to expect this summer going into fall.

Flat out right now, I don't have a good feel. There is talent there, but is it ripe? It's an entirely different team and has turned off dramatically the last two years. The last two years can be thought of as one run. This team is going to be totally different than the one that took the field the last three years. No Deleston and Butler in the secondary? That's a scary thought.

If there is one position that worries outside of the usual suspects of QB and WR (it's wait, see and pray) it would be the defensive line. Lindsey Witten is due for a big year (if he can stay injury free) but DE was thin before Marcus Campbell was jettisoned. The tackles have loads of talent, but Campbell was going to be a major cog in the rotation. Hey, maybe they should blitz this year?

So that's my semi-pro opinion. If there is an under the radar worry spot for me it is defensive end.

As far as the State of the Union on the blog ---

As far as what my plans are for the year, I do look back at the blog and stories I wrote and I liked some of what I did, other things not so much.

I kicked myself for missing out on some good stories, I also am going to try and alter the blog a bit as I think its become stale. I am going to do a lot of the quick one liners and news on twitter and leave the blog for more inside football and thoughts.

If you read the blog, sign up and follow on twitter to stay up to date @johnfsilver.

The ever popular live game blog will continue. I am amazed how many people like to read it after the game and point out how smart I am...

Lastly goal No. 1 for Newport is to eat a full lobster at the Big East Clambake. I don't like seafood and I have a hard time eating a lobster (something about it looking up at me). My goal is to eat one Monday night.

And in case you are wondering. Yes it's true, with a name like John Silver, I do not like sea food.

Life is hard, ain't it?

Im most interested in the WR situation for UConn...I never doubt the O-line, I think Todman is the real deal and I like Frazier. But since 2004, we haven't had anyone who can actually catch the ball.
