Day 1 in the books

On a boiling day in Storrs, the Huskies opened fall practice. UConn coach Randy Edsall, who ended the day screaming at Moe Petrus, wasn't ready to make any judgments on the first day.

I took a good look at the freshmen receivers and without a doubt Dwayne Difton is athletic, fast and agile. He is a bit on the small side, but even on the first day you can see the polish and route running skills. He took some snaps with the second unit during drills.

Edsall didn't want to praise any of the freshmen in particular, but how about this for his thoughts on the much talked about 4 freshmen wide receivers.

"There is more talent at (WR) than we have had before,"Edsall said. "There
are plenty of opportunities. I saw a lot of athleticism and quickness out
ofthe skill guys."

For Edsall-speak, that means he likes what he sees -- a lot.

Zach Frazer looked sharp his first day back, and it looks like he has a good re pore with the holdover receivers. Here are some quick news and notes.

*Brian Parker, a redshirt freshman WR, is on the team, but he is ineligible to play. He will practice with the team this year. He is not on the roster and will spend the season on the scout team.

*Matt Ashmead, a LB,graduated in the summer and is no longer playing football.

* KC Chambers, who was in the mix at defensive end, was booted out of school for "university discipline reasons"according to Edsall.

That's it for now, have some work to do. I thought the wide receivers (the group I really concentrated on today) looked much more athletic and quick as a group. The frosh are going to play this year.
