I am surprised by this and I am not sure how good a choice it is. That spread option offense needs a special kind of triggerman and I am not sure Michigan has it. And, I thought Rich Rodriguez had found his niche in Morgantown.
It's hard to turn down Michigan though, especially when you turned down Alabama a year before.
This is a big blow for the Big East. Lost Petrino and Rodriguez in consecutive years. How long Greg Schiano and Randy Edsall going to stick around? If the Penn State job opens you can bet both would jump at that in a heartbeat. Brian Kelly has one year in and is already out the door. Jim Leavitt is sure to be a candidate for a SEC job in the coming years.
What would happen if someone went after Greg Robinson? (ok, I know, piling on).
But, the worst thing for a program and a league is coaching instability. Players are only around 5 years, it is the coach that drives the program building and becomes how people relate to a team. The coach is the center of a college football team because they are the only holdovers year to year. You build around our coach.
It's funny, this summer in Newport the question that was all the rage was because guys like Schiano and Rodriguez stayed in the Big East that the conference is a "destination league" not a jumping off point.
What do you think now?
The league's best team, which would be a top 5 team and a national title contender next year, lost it's coach. Schiano, Edsall and Brian Kelly all flirted with other institutions.
If the coaches don't want to stay, what does that tell you?

You have been bashing the Big 10 all year for being a bad conference, however, coaches and the public still believe it is a better conference than the big east.

John - Not true. They all flirted and they all stayed at their Big East schools. Schiano, Kelly and Edsall didn't go anywhere and said no to great places in the process, including Schiano's dance with Miami last year. What does that tell you?
I hate the Big 10. I hope Rodriguez injects some life into the conference. I find the football incredibly boring.
As far as Schiano, Kelly and Edsall staying...were any of these coaches actually offered the job they flirted with?
Schiano talked with Michigan, as did Edsall according to reports.
These guys are waiting for the next best thing. Schiano has flirted wit three jobs in 2 years. Kelly has been there one year and already is looking t get out.
Edsall has one good year and looked to cash in.
These guys have been dying to get out.
If Edsall was dying to get out, he'd be gone. Syracuse came calling after 2004. Ga. Tech, by all accounts, would have offerred him.
Schiano was offered the Miami job and reportedly offered the Michigan job. Both Schiano and Edsall should be commended for being very honest throughout the process and merely seeing what was out there.
I don't know how you can say that those two were merely looking to get out when they've passed up opportunities to do so. I can't fault anyone for looking at other jobs...I do it in my line of work, have you done it at yours, John? Or you just tickled pink with your job over there?
The point is guys like Schiano and Edsall have been honest with their fans about what's going on. I don't know any UConn fan that is angry that Edsall talked with Ga. Tech, why wouldn't he see what was the situation?
It's better than someone like Rich Rodriguez lying about meeting Michigan officials then sneaking off in the middle of the night.
