Quick update
As far as the juniors not returning, Mathieu Olivier was the only surprise. Guys like WR Kevin Poles and MLBGreg Robinson are graduating and haven't really seen any field time this year. They can go transfer to a lower level if they want and play one year as a grad student. Poles never moved up and played, and Robinson has a chronic ankle issue if I understand correctly.
Poles has played some on special teams in his career. He looked good his initial couple of weeks of camp, and then we never heard from him again. Robinson made the tackle on Matt Grothe that sealed the Huskies' only win over a ranked team in their history two years ago. That's the only time he really was on the radar here, but it was a great play.
Olivier, a guard, is a different case. He began the season as a starter and lost his job to Erik Kuraczea. He is going to graduate and go to grad school and play at a lower level because he wants more playing time. WR Alex Molina? He was a walk-on who got a scholarship this season. He was a special teams guy at times, but it's time for him to move on. UConn coach Randy Edsall also said that Olivier has some personal issues he wants to address and would like to be closer to home in Woburn, Mass.
This was decided several weeks ago by Olivier, who wasn't starting at the time. Edsall hasn't heard since he has been placed in the starting lineups.
On some other tidbits: Andre Dixon talked with the media and was his usual self. Andre is the most passionate player on the Huskies. He speaks honestly. He talked about getting here, about his troubles including his DUI, and how he knew he couldn't mess up this last chance.
Dixon said he wasn't going to return to UConn if Don Brown came back. Not surprising, and we heard as much. Dixon wasn't interested in transferring and let's just say that this season has worked out beautifully.
Dixon is going to get a shot at the NFL (late draft pick in my opinion) and the thing we forget is how big he is. Dixon is 6-1, 210 pounds and is a tough physical runner, terrific pass blocker and good receiver out of backfield. He also has proved he can be productive in a two-man back rotation, and that's very important in the NFL because more teams are using multiple backs. NFL people like guys like Dixon who plug away at a position and show they can play roles.
Lot's of talk about the weather, USF and more.
Be back later.

Tuesday presser -- 3 days post ND
A loss on Saturday to the Cuse would kind of nullify the big win. This week, against a dangerous Syracuse team, the Huskies need to consolidate the wins and get on a streak. Big wins have to be followed with wins to keep momentum going.
This is another big game for the Huskies and they need to sweep these final two at home. Syracuse has the 9th ranked defense against the run and that alone makes them dangerous. The fact that Rutgers was "over confident" to me is one of the most embarrassing admissions from a major college team this year. The Scarlet Knights were pounded 30-13, and considering the schedule this year, they shouldn't have been over confident about anyone.
That said, I can't remember any time that Randy Edsall's team have ever been over-confident. The Huskies are usually good in this spot when they are favored against a team like Syracuse.
Here's Edsall take on that.
"In this business, we always try to do the job and stress last week doesn’t matter this week. It’s a one game season. They saw what Syracuse did to Rutgers. The film doesn’t lie. You have to be honest with yourself. Put film on, watch the opponent, and be honest, they are a good football team and they have had tough luck this year."
The Huskies are never overconfident. Part of that is the coach. Edsall, sometimes to his detriment, doesn't project arrogance and confidence. Sometimes, when you don't do that you elevate a lesser team to your level and that's dangerous. But, by taking losing teams like Syracuse seriously there is less chance of a surprise.
And, let's be clear. This Syracuse team isn't the one from the last several years. The Cuse have a terrific run defense and have played hard all season. They could easily be in bowl contention with a couple of breaks. The roster is decimated, but I think Doug Marrone is off to a good start. The Orange may have emptied the chamber in the home finale against Rutgers last week, but this is the season finale and they want to set a tone for next year.
“I see a team defensively that is sound and solid," Edsall said. "There stats prove that out. On offense, they give you a lot to prepare. When they haven’t turned the ball over on offense they make themselves a much more effective football team.
“They have gotten a lot better from the beginning of the year. Doug has done a nice job with that job. They are a team that has a lot of ability.”
The Huskies are confident however, and more importantly, feeling better about themselves. Edsall talked about how the team can smile again. The tension is now gone from the Huskies' team.
Here's Andre Dixon on that. You want the pulse of the team, Dixon is the one to go to. He has his finger right on it, and he doesn't know what spin or careful words are.
"You know how it is. People patting you on the back for close games, who wants to be patted on the back for close games?," Dixon said. "When you pull out that win, it’s amazing. Especially such a big one like that one. We are about to put it about everyone’s mind at practice."
The Huskies will be ready for Saturday. They are going to need that passing game though to loosen up the Cuse defense.
As far as other notes, I saw running backs coach Terry Richardson today and he is doing well. He was at his mother's funeral on Saturday and caught the 4th quarter and overtime. He spoke to the team via speakerphone after the game. He said he couldn't sit still the final quarter. The win was something he needed.
Edsall also talked a bit about the young corners, Dwayne Gratz and Blid Wreh Wilson. Wreh-Wilson is an interesting story considering he didn't play football in high school until his senior year, he was a soccer player.
The Huskies weren't even recruiting him, but were after another player when Matt Cersosimo was blown away by his athleticism. Once they saw him live they pounced and got another keeper. This is going to be the linchpin to the Huskies' secondary. Both of these corners have good size at 6-0, and Gratz is strong and looks like he can be a physical corner and a good run support corner. Blidi needs to get stronger, but he has great athleticism.
He is playing college football with only 2 years of playing football, and only one spent in college. That's called natural talent. It also goes to show you why Edsall and Co. are successful. Too often the recruiting services are grading high school players as high school players against their peers. Many times, players are maxed out in high school and get better, but not much better in college. Blidi Wreh-Wilson wasn't refined, but is so gifted he is going to explode in coming years.
Edsall knows the secondary. That's his expertise and where he coached in the NFL at. This is a position I am sure UConn is going to continue to produce NFL caliber players at. They have 2, and more will be on the way in coming years.
Right now, the Huskies corners are young and that's a problem. But, it bodes well for the future. Hopefully, in the next week we can talk to Blidi. I hope to catch up with him soon. It's certainly an interesting story.

Tuesday presser-- What is mystique?
Why do I say that? Well, I took the time out of our interviews to give a little pop quiz to the players.
1. Name one of the Four Horseman
2. Last Notre Dame player to win the Heisman
3. Quarterback of the 1988 national championship team
4. Who was the coach of the Irish in the 1920s.
The only one that the players got, after thinking, was Tim Brown 1987 Heisman winner. None of the players had any idea who are what the four horsemen are. Now that's just unacceptable to me as a journalist to not know who the four horseman are.
“Outlined against a blue-gray October sky the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are: Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden. They formed the crest of the South Bend cyclone before which another fighting Army team was swept over the precipice at the Polo Grounds this afternoon as 55,000 spectators peered down upon the bewildering panorama spread out upon the green plain below."
Now, the story goes that an Notre Dame official immediately liked the story and got the four horsemen to pose.

Tuesday Presser -- checking in late
This was an interesting day up at the Burton Complex. I was expecting a tight team, perhaps a little shell-shocked or even a little unsettled going to play No. 4 Cincinnati at ABC. Usually before big games where the Huskies are big underdogs there is a tension in the room.
This week was different. The vibe was relaxed, calm and confident.
Randy Edsall walked in to the defensive team's meeting room and just started answering questions. He was calm and confident. It was worry free. Usually during big games Edsall gets a little uptight and intense. There wasn't that there. I think he is comfortable with this team, and has a good idea what they can do.
After eight games we know what kind of team the Huskies will show up with. Edsall is projecting confidence this week and telling his team they can beat anyone, well because, they should have beaten everyone they played.
“We are good enough to beat any team on schedule," Edsall said. "The first 8 games proved that out. We didn’t, but we are good enough to beat anyone else on our schedule."
Edsall has told his team the same on Sunday.
Here's Reggie McClain on the Huskies 4-4 record and looking forward.
"We have been through a lot this year, and you have to be able to bounce back. If you can't keep going off negatives and past games, you keep moving forward.”
“You can’t look back. We have to keep moving forward and make a big step and a big improvement."
"We know this season is not over, there is still a possibility to get in a good bowl game and prepare correctly."
I can't predict how the Huskies are going to play but I came away Tuesday afternoon having a good vibe.
In other notes:
* Johnny McEntee is No. 2 on the chart at QB. No sense burning Mike Box's redshirt.
I also talked to Zach Frazer a bit. He is anxious to get out there and finally get a chance to play. There is no backup for the Frazer, so the rest of this season is his to play. He has never had a chance like this. He remarked how crazy his career has been.
As far as his play, he said he feels back in the swing of things. On some of the interceptions, he called them "stupid decisions." Frazer knows these last four games are likely his last chance. Cody Endres was terrific and Frazer wants to start, and needs to perform well to make this a competition this spring. More importantly, the Huskies still have a shot at a bowl game. One thing Frazer can do is throw the ball. Decision-making will decide the Huskies' fate. Frazer can't turn it over against Cincinnati.
The Bearcats have four interceptions all year and no fumbles. How crazy is that? They committed six turnovers last year in a 40-16 loss to the Huskies.
* Lots of talk about the ABC game. In the next two games UConn will be on ABC and NBC. Can't get much more exposure than that.

On second thought, Lutrus is in
Scott Lutrus was potentially gone for the year during Tuesday's weekly press conference at the Burton complex. UConn coach Randy Edsall after three weeks of questioning said that the staff didn't know the status of Lutrus because nerve injuries act funny. Then the hammer dropped and "out for the season" was mentioned.
Before the hysteria was over Edsall came in to the Burton Complex cafeteria and announced that Lutrus passed his physical test and is probable for Saturday.
BREAKING NEWS: Lutrus is probable to start at linebacker.
So that's that for UConn at linebacker. They are going to be at full health as they go into the Big East season and against Pittsburgh it can't come at a better time.
Why? Because as The Day of New London's Chuck Banning astutely asked Edsall during the conference call -- the nickel package is not something that the Huskies are going to be able to run against Pittsburgh most of the time.
The Huskies have responded by Lutrus' absence by inserting Blidi Wreh Wilson in at corner and moving Reggie McClain to nickelback. That defense is susceptible to the power running game that Pittsburgh can employ. The Huskies are going to need that extra backer at times against the Panthers and it was going to fall on Jory Johnson, a redshirt freshman. Now, Lutrus is back and the defense which is ranked No. 7 in the nation even looks more stout.
Lutrus allows the defense to do so much more and having him play the middle in the nickel package enhances the pass coverage. There are so many things they do defensively that include Lutrus his return can not be understated. The defense played well in his absence, but this makes them stronger and more versatile.
Here are other pressing matters:
* Aaron Bagsby and Jerome Junior are in an "or" at string safety. Junior has 30 pounds on Bagsby, but the redshirt sophomore is more experienced and is a ball hawk at the position. Bagsby missed the seasons first three games with a school suspension, but returned agaisnt URI and played most of the game. Why Bagsby? Big plays. Pittsburgh has big play capability and Junior has played well at times, but has also allowed big plays against him. Bagsby and Junior will battle this week for the job and whomever the staff feels is better at playing these plays will start. Basgby has more instinct, but is nowhere near the size of Junior.
*The WR rotation? There is six with Kanuch, Mike Smith the starters with Kashif Moore and Isiah Moore in the "OR" position as the third WR. Backing up Kanuch is Difton. The sixth and final for now is Mike Lang. Edsall also mentioned Nick Williams will get some plays, but that appears to be the rotation.
* Edsall had some good things to say on the Big East. It's one thing to be wide open (which is a kind way to say mediocre), but the league looks powerful heading into Big East play. Edsall then questioned the so called experts, but the point remains. The Big East right now has five teams that have looked impressive in Cincy, USF, West Virginia and UConn. Rutgers is still TBD and haven't played anyone but will have a sparkling 4-1 record after this week. Syracuse has played tough and at 2-2 could easily be better. The only drag appears to be Louisville, and they are far from a walk-over to play.
There isn't a Top 5 team in the conference, but there is plenty depth in the conference which is why in my opinion is superior to the MWC.
That's it for now, got to pay the bills.

Tuesday presser
Endres woke up this morning vomiting and he won't be at practice today, which is somewhat alarming. Mike Box, the true freshman for Georgia, right now is the man in the ho tseat. He is going to run the first team offense and if Endres can't go he will be the player playing. Endres is expected to recover after 24 hours, but it's has to be a crash course for Box just in case.
If Endres can't go for any reason or his hurt during the game, Edsall was adamant that Box is next in. The Huskies are going to go with their best quarterback and not play around with trying to save a redshirt. Box is getting all the snaps today in practice.
As for Witten, he picked up another sack on Monday. There has been a lot of dispute as to his sack total and the defensive end picked up another one when he was credited with a sack that was previously given to Jess Joseph. Witten had three sacks against Ohio and four against UNC. He leads the nation in sack with 3.5 per game. He wasn't available either because of the GI (assuming it stands for gastrointestinal bug).
Other highlights: UConn coach Randy Edsall is adamant that the passing game is getting better. He brushed off the statistics which shows the Huskeis are once again near the bottom of the FBS in passing. He thought before he got hurt that Zach Frazer was throwing the ball well and the stats look much different if it were not a Brad Kanuch and a Isiah Moore drops.
I also have some good stuff from Reggie McClain, Kendall Reyes and Scott Lutrus.
Scott Lutrus looks and feels like he is ready to play. He thought he could play last week, but there was no talking the medical personnel in it. The Huskies will be practicing this week in the Shenkman Center and turning the heat up.
That's it for now, got to pay the bills

Ultra quick update
* Scott Lutrus said he is going to play Saturday. Edsall wouldn't comment until Thursday, but the captain said he is fine. He felt tingling down his shoulder as a result of the stinger suffered in the fourth quarter.
*Gary Wilburn is the new backup free safety. He is also the nickel back. Edsall didn't want to move Reggie McClain to nickel and play Blidi Wreh Wilson or Dwayne Gratz at corner. Wilburn can play corner, safety and nickel. Marcus Aiken is just not reay to play this season.
* Lindsey Witten was defensive player of the week. He was credited with his third sack after an official ruling change. Ohio University didn't want to give him a sack on the safety. They misinterpreted the rule. Lindsey had 3 sacks.
* Jerome Williams now backup LB at weakside linebacker. Sio Moore out with a hamstring.
*4,000 tickets remain for Saturday's game according to Jeff Hathaway.
Most of the talk was about the Huskies' new punt formation and talk of Trevardo Williams' play. More on Cullen and Williams later,
Right now, I have to pay the bills.

Tuesday presser
It was as routine a press conference today as there can be. It's been that kind of camp too., No drama, little conflict, more just intrigue. We have to wait and see the offense before we can make any conclusions. It's 5 days away.
Randy Edsall, as he has for much of the summer and spring, was much more relaxed and comfortable. Incredibly, there have been few injuries this year and OT Jimmy Bennett's surgery last week went well and he is doing better than doctors expected. Too early to speculate whether he can return by spring.
Spoke with Jerome Junior and Brad Kanuch among others today.
Junior is a great story coming out of Baltimore, Md. He is another one of those lightly recruited players and had invitations to UConn and Northwestern for football camp. Junior's father told him he only had money to get to one place, and he decided it was going to be UConn. He woke up at 3 a.m. and took a train from Baltimore to Connecticut by himself. Who does that?
He arrived in Storrs and the coaching staff told him to sleep. Junior was so excited he wanted to jump right into camp. He never played safety in high school and had no idea what a cover 2 was when he camped in Storrs. Junior loved it in Storrs the moment he got here. A couple of weeks later when he received a scholarship offer he immediately said "yes." Then, he went and told his father.
The thing about Junior when you look at him is his build -- he looks like a linebacker. He is 6-foot-1 215 pounds with room to grow right now. Broad shoulders, and he plays the deep ball better than Dahna Deleston according to Edsall. His footwork has improved dramatically and he hits like a Mac truck. Junior is still raw, but if he can play safety at that size and strength this early in his career they have a find there.
As far as Kanuch, he has a chip on his shoulder this year. When asked about last year's season the word that came to his mind was "miserable."
"Miserable,” Kanuch said when asked to reflect on last season. “I was hurt all the time and the hamstring nagged at me all year. That was miserable and then getting nothing thrown my way. It wasn’t that great a year. It wasn’t what I was hoping it would be. I came in with such high expectations and it went to hell five days into practice. After that, it was whatever.”
Will up date with some quotes and audio of Kanuch. Kanuch is tired of hearing how unproductive the wide receivers are. He mentioned how when you get the ball thrown to you once a half "in the second half you are shocked” when the ball comes your way.
More importantly, Kanuch believes the talent here is far superior at wide out than before. If we can remember, Kanuch started two games into his true freshman year at wide receiver. He said that if he were a freshman coming in there would be virtually no shot that he would play.
That's an important point for me because that shows there has at least been some progress. The results aren't there on the field as of yet, but the receivers are better.
“It’s a lot of unheard talent,” Kanuch said. “No one knows what we are capable of doing because of what the offense was of doing the last couple of years.”
My own opinion? I think the unit is going to surprise this year. I don't know if there is a big play guy in the bunch that is going to be the dominant receiver, but I think they will be productive.
Other notes:
*Edsall on Zach Frazer playing this week:
"He is completely ready to run the show and the offense and be a leader. He got a lot better as preseason wore on. After second scrimmage he played very well. In game week, he is very focused and very intent on going out there and doing what we want him to do. He has to go out and execute the game plan we have. If Zach does that, we will be fine. Zach needs to take what the defense gives him."
What does Zach offer? For those who haven't seen much of him.
"Zach throws the football well," Edsall said. "He is a good passer and has a strong arm. He is a tough competitor and understands things. He has a presence that the offensive guys like."
"...How he is in the huddle on the field -- confident and reassuring. He has a strong arm and can make the throws he needs to make."
A QB whose strength is throwing? I'll take it. The key for Frazer this week is avoiding turnovers. He threw six interceptions and against Pittsburgh in a relief outing last year threw three interceptions in 4 passes. It's more decision making with Frazer than ability.
- We also talked with Frank Solich, Ohio University coach, about the game and facing a new offense. Solich has faced Akron every year and knows Joe Moorhead's offense well. Stop the run first. As far how Ohio will prepare? They are watching both UConn's film last year (for the running game) and Akron's film last year to get ready for Moorhead's scheme.
Edsall addressed a couple of national topics. He was asked about the Michigan possible violations of working more than 20 hours a week on football and he doesn't feel it's possible to ask more than that for players. The coaching staff has the week scheduled down to the minute and they use about 19:30 hours. He doesn't feel with the academic rigors its even possible to ask more of the players.
There is some more, but it's time to pay the bills.

Tuesday presser
Edsall is also in favor of a college football playoff (more than the plus 1), and he also wants nowhere near the St Pete Bowl (exams).
Then there is some news.

Running back Andre Dixon is suspended indefinitely by the team for a rules violation? The violation? Getting arrested.
Dixon was arrested on Tuesday morning, at 1:40 a.m. on North Eagleville Road for operating a motor vehicle vehicle under the influence. Dixon was also cited for following to close.
Here are the particulars: Dixon was following a police car too closely early Tuesday morning and the officer stopped him. The officer, suspecting intoxication, then asked Dixon to take a field sobriety test, which he failed. He was arrested and released on a $500 non-surety bond. He has a court date Dec. 15.
It's been a tough go for Dixon. A year ago he was a second team All-Big East selection a year ago and has been buried as Donald Brown has turned himself into the one of the top running backs in America. Dixon never got going this season after suffering an ankle injury prior to week one.
I am skeptical that Dixon will ever be back.
Other news items.
*Steve Brouse will return as the punt protector and tight end.
*C.J. Marck is joining Greg Lloyd on the personal issues front and is out for Saturday's game. Personal issues could be academic, or, it could be personal. That's the problem for being vague.
*19 seniors will be honored on Saturday. Among those will be safety Glenn Mourning and defensive back Terry Baltimore. Both of them have a year of eligibility left but have decided this was it.
Be back late, got to pay the bills.
Short update: Just looking at Bowl scenarios. A case could be made for the Sun if UConn wins Saturday and WVU loses to USF. I think in that scenario UConn may be the second highest ranked team. But, is the Sun even an option?
Take a look at their website. UConn isn't even one of the teams in the fan poll about 'Who you want to come to El Paso?'
Toronto or Birmingham most likely regardless what happens.

Tuesday presser
Here is some thoughts. Let's think logically:
I know people are going to read into statements. Perhaps, that is inevitable and I am sure UConn fans would like him to just say: No, I will not be Syracuse coach next year. Edsall didn't go that far, but I would take the statement at face value. Nick Saban said he wasn't going to Alabama because he hated the local Miami media and he had no respect for the Dolphins organization.
Do you really think Randy Edsall would volunteer the info if it wasn't true? Does he have that little respect for the university, state and his players? Not in your life. He would take 3 uncomfortable weeks over a damaged reputation. UConn has been good to him and vice versa.
Remember, if Cuse wants to negotiate Edsall is bound by contract to let UConn know. As a courtesy, Syracuse would go to UConn AD Jeff Hathaway anyway. Why would UConn play along? Why would UConn allow Edsall to take the pressure off himself, only to go to Syracuse three weeks from now? UConn would be nuts as an administration to play along. The harm it would cause Edsall's reputation is immeasurable anyway.
No coach wants to be the next Nick Saban or Rich Rodriguez. Saban's and Rodriguez's reputations are in tatters.
Edsall isn't going to Syracuse this year. I believe him. He took that off the table Monday. Flat out took it off the table. There is no splicing words or careful wording. Edsall's intentions can't be clear. No to Syracuse. He can't back out of this without severe harm to his reputation.
Great blog stuff, but perhaps Syracuse should bark up another tree.
On to the more important stuff, the USF presser!:
* Edsall talked a bit about the defensive tackle rotation and why redshirt freshmen Kendall Reyes and Twyon Martin have passed the banged up Rob Lunn and Alex Polito. Polito is still hurting, but Reyes and Martin are quicker and more stout and have great hands. Edsall then talked about his young defensive tackles. Defensive linemen are the toughest to recruit and Edsall loves the youth and ability of not only Reyes and Martin but also redshirt Ryan Wirth. Those three guys are for the future and when you factor in upcoming recruiting classes it looks like the Huskies are going to have a nice D-Line situation for years to come.
Reyes and Martin roomed last year. They talked a lot about getting on the field together. Neither figured it would be this quick.
UConn is looking for quicker and more athletic defensive lineman to combat the spread. He wants athletic and mobile over straight 300 plus size. They have these guys all over the place. This is the hardest position to find, and Huskies look to have a nice stable.
*Edsall talked about DE Cody Brown too. "Living up to my expectations." Brown has been a monster. Edsall saying Brown's living up to expectations is about as high a praise you can get for Brown in season (wonder what Edsall thinks of Donald Brown?).
Brown said that he still considers George Selvie the best DE in the league. He also said watch out next year for UConn junior DE Lindsey Witten. "Lindsey's a beast," Brown said.
Brown has a bet with Jasper Howard about how many deflected balls each will get this year. Right now it is Jaz 11-8. Brown said he used to do it with Darius Butler but Butler was sick of losing.
* As far as D. Butler. He hasn't returned to practice yet but he is aiming for the Pittsburgh game to return. It is a sprained left knee and won't require offseason surgery. Butler said he is "All done" returning kicks. He also was told early on that it wasn't serious. On the field the and in the locker room right after he was given some positive information. He said the NFL didn't enter his mind because he didn't think the injury was that bad and it he had the same thing happen to his right knee before.
Look for Butler definitely for the bowl, maybe for Dec. 6.
*Steve Brouse is going to return to practice this week. Mostly this week in a special teams capacity, and they will see if he can play at tight end. I would expect him back Dec. 6 also if he doesn't return this week.
*Edsall saw Jordan' Todman's kick and couldn't believe he took the ball out from 5 yards deep. Todman got to the 40 yard line, an excellent kick return. Edsall: "It's a good thing he is fast."
*Lastly, this is the first time returning to Tampa since the infamous Beergate scenario that led to six players being dismissed from the team. A handful of players went and got beer from a convenience store and were soon outed. It was a disaster to the team and even worse a public relations fiasco. The Huskies have had relatively few problems since, and that was a point of emphasis.
Edsall isn't taking any chances: "We aren't staying in that same hotel."

Tuesday presser
Anyhow, on to Syracuse...
Don't ask. We aren't going to get into it. Gametime decision at quarterback between Zach Frazer(who is honestly healthy) and Cody Endres.
Tyler Lorenzen has resumed some running and practice, but it doesn't appear he is going to be considered an option this week (maybe next week?). Randy Edsall had some insightful things to say about Lorenzen and the QB position.
Edsall talked to Jim Calhoun recently and the hoops jefe said that Edsall defending Lorenzen was like him defending Taliek Brown.
There is some truth in that and Lorenzen is under-appreciated. What I got from Edsall's presser was that if healthy, without a doubt, Lorenzen will play when he is cleared and healthy.
I talked to Tyler today and he is feeling better, but he hasn't pushed it yet. Edsall said as of Tuesday, it's between Cody Endres and Zach Frazer. I believe Edsall.
Edsall said the Huskies are missing the game management and the leadership of Lorenzen. No issues here from me. Lorenzen is a winner and I think the Huskies beat Rutgers and WVU with him at the helm. It's about intangibles.
As far as Endres vs. Frazer. They are both close, it's about who will make better decisions and won't make turn the ball over. It's more leadership and intangibles than talent. Frazer isn't available on Tuesday's he has class, though he is available on Wednesday's. Don't read anything more into that when you see Lorenzen and Endres quotes.
We'll see how this develops over the coming weeks. My bet is Lorenzen starting home against Pittsburgh Dec. 6.
* Edsall tried to down play all Syracuse angles. He ducked even the question whether at one time he coveted the expected opening at Syracuse when Greg Robinson is deposed. There is going to be a lot of talking in coming weeks, I won't put much stock in it. UConn is a better job now, more secure, and with greater upside. It's functionally a sideways move. It would take him 4 years to get the Cuse program to where UConn is now. Maybe the Cuse ceiling is higher because of its tradition. Tradition seems to be the best thing the Orange has going for them, and that's not a great position to be in. Syracuse has some structural challenges to returning as a football power, chiefly the almost unlimited resources of UConn and Rutgers as state schools. In almost every instance except tradition, Syracuse is at a disadvantage to Rutgers and UConn.
There is no rational reason for Edsall to even consider the Cuse job. Now, if he has a soft spot for the Cuse, needs a career challenge, is sick of the CT media, and he thinks that he can get Cuse to be a Big East power in a way UConn can't, then perhaps it's possible. But, that is an emotional decision, not a rational one. He can accomplish all his career goals at UConn in a much more secure environment. You have to see a job as what it is and what it can be, not what it once was or how you wish it to be (Notre Dame anyone?).
Be back later, have some good stuff

Tuesday presser -- avalanche of info
First news is that the QB position is still unknown.
Zach Frazer is recovering from a "head injury" and the staff is not classifying it as a concussion using a more broad term to describe the injury. Yes, a concussion is a head injury. But until a I hear it from the horses mouth (the doctor), Zach, or UConn, I can't classify it as a concussion.
He is still questionable for Saturday. Cody Endres is the backup. I get the sense that this is truthful. UConn is going to evaluate Frazer today and on Wednesday and Thursday to see if he can go.
If there was a starter today for UConn? Probably Endres. UConn is going to see how Frazer progresses. He is going to class, so he is alert enough to actually do school-work.
I should address the unavailability of Frazer and Endres to the media. Edsall said that Frazer has class on Tuesday and it's impossible for him to make the Tuesday interviews without a major effort. Other arrangements will be made as requested however, and as long as the requests are taken seriously, I don't think access will be an issue. At least I am willing to work a little harder and head up to Storrs on Wednesday if necessary (actually, it would work out better.Prefer to space interviews out). As far as Endres, Edsall is pulling the Frazer thing from pre-Carolina because he may start. Kind of silly if you ask me, but, to each his own.
More will be known Thursday. I think that is an honest assessment of the situation.
Third or second string is mystery man Johnny McEntee, walk-on from California. No D.J. Hernandez back to QB -- not going to happen. In perhaps the funniest exchanges at the lunch was Edsall answering questions about Johnny. At one point Edsall had to remind that McEntee is the third-string right now. A little too much McEntee questioning (I asked the final one of course). Casey Turner is not in the equation. McEntee is no Matt Vollono however. He is a preferred walk-on and has some ability.
Dave Teggart will start as kicker for the Huskies over Tony C. Tony C is a standup guy, and took questions before he had to dodge for class. Tony C. class act, was on Saturday after missing three kicks, and was on Tuesday. Tony C. is taking it all right however. Got to speak to Teggart today.
He comes in to the cafeteria and is mobbed by 15 media members. He couldn't believe it but held up well. He was a soccer player when he was young, and his father got him into kicking (pops kicked at New Hampshire). Big strong legs for Teggart, he has very thick legs. Feels comfortable under 55 yards. Kicked 48 yarders in high school.
Edsall addressed two controversial calls on Saturday. He sent in the film on the Martin Bedard pass interference call and the Donald Brown safety. The Brown safety was the decisive play in the game and on further review he was never down in the endzone.
That's a serious error on the officials part in my opinion. Edsall didn't have a good look of a play on the ground, and the Huskies don't have the benefit of replay in the booth like they do in the NFL. So, the coach may challenge the play blindly, or the replay booth can call the play. How that play didn't meet the standard of review is beyond me. Clearly, Brown didn't touch the ground in the endzone. Edsall didn't find this out definitively until he watched film.
Too late.
There is a lot more, but I have work to do. When I get a chance,I will empty the notebook.

Tuesday presser -- back in the saddle
Good news with injuries: All the defensive tackles should be healthy to play with Rob Lunn, Alex Polito and Kendall Reyes recovering from ankle injuries.
On the down side, tight end Yianni Aposyolakos is out for 2 months with a hip injury. John Delahunt moves into the backup slot now. The Huskies used tackle Dan Ryan at tight end, I am not sure how much he will be in that role on Saturday at Rutgers. Delahunt has yet to play this season. The team sorely misses Steve Brouse.
Donald Brown is jacked for the Jersey game. All the Jersey kids are. Brown said everyone always makes fun of New Jersey, that's why all Jerseyites have a chip in their shoulders.
That's it for news. I will be back after I pay the bills...

Tuesday presser
Frazer is a better thrower than Tyler Lorenzen, though not as athletic. Frazer impressed Edsall with his poise and makeup against Louisville.
"I liked his poise in the game,"Edsall said. "He did a good job of going in the game and having fun. He was showing good leadership on the field. Any quarterback wants that opportunity and he wanted to make the most of it."
The offense is going to change some, but Edsall wasn't letting on how much. Edsall thought the Butler TD throw was outstanding as the one he caught on the sideline.Butler had a great quote on that throw:
"It was tight, I think even if the defender got a finger on it, it wouldn't have stopped the spiral,"Butler said.
The kid can throw the ball, that's for sure. Frazer is not available for interviews this week. Sorry to disappoint everyone. Trust me, it didn't go over well, but I won't bore any of you with inside machinations of the beat. It's not about Edsall vs. the press. If that is the focus this week it's a win for Edsall.
Edsall explained his thoughts on shielding Frazer from the press this week.
"I will tell you what, it's unbelievable. Everyone will want to do a story on it and that is the big thing...
The young man is making his first start this week. The only thing he needs to focus on is getting himself ready for the game. To play the best game he can. It's my prerogative to protect my players and allow them to prepare the best way I feel possible for them to be successful. That is what I am doing. I told him that and he appreciated that, very much so.
"This is what I feel is best for him and our program. It isn't a slight to anyone. Just like you make decisions, you write what you want to write. I am making decisions on what's best with young man and best for the program. He was all for it when I told him about it.
"If I thought 10 minutes would have been good, I would have done it. It will be all over newspapers and blogs this week. I can take some of the tension off him. I like this."
I think Frazer should be available. We aren't the White House Press corps and Edsall is giving me too much credit if he thinks my questions can have any impact whatsoever on the psyche going into the game. Frazer could have handled the 15 minutes.
Anyhow, not having Frazer available to talk to me is a distraction of the real issue:
Is Frazer good enough to step in and lead this team?
That's the important question. I guess we will find out Saturday.
Other notes:
* Rob Lunn, Kendall Reyes, and Alex Polito will all play this week. Good news.
* We are going to see more of D.Butler on offense. His playing only on third downs and only in the red zone rule was broken. Edsall had a heart attack moment against Louisville when his star corner went down injured. Edsall thought Butler hurt a knee (he got kneed in the back). Edsall said an increased role of Butler is "to be determined." I would determine the answer is yes. Butler is the team's most dangerous wideout.
*Donald Brown and Knowshon Moreno of Georgia were Pop Warner football teammates. Brown and Moreno would alternate as the running back and the wing back. Brown said Moreno seems like the same guy, a ton of energy. He hasn't talked to Moreno since they went to college, but Brown expects to see him at the Downtown Athletic Club in December (okay, I asked Brown that and he started to laugh, but it's still a good line). Anyhow, South Jersey has become tailback central for college football.
*Brown laughed when I asked him if he had 4.29 40 speed as was reported in an SI article on him. No he doesn't. Edsall said if anyone has that speed they should be trying for gold medals.
Be back for more later.
Gotta to pay the bills.

In Today's JI
Of note, I will be on NFL Network's College Football Now today. We'll see how it goes. I hate giving predictions, I better come up with one real quick.
Edit late: The great Santini has me on video. I can't bring myself to watch it, but Mrs. Silver liked it. I spent about an hour prepping for a 2 minute segment.

Tuesday, more thoughts
Here is Rob Lunn's blog.
You know what they say about opinions? Well, it seems that everyone has a blog too. I. Mean. Everyone. Lunn is a good guy. He has to thread the needle and be honest and cutting, but not outrageous.
How about USF and NC State going at it?
How about that for candor in Tom O'Brien's part. Here is O'Brien on USF's defense, which was consulted with by Ohio State and Colorado coaches on stopping the spread offense. In the St. Pete times.
"Did you watch them against Oregon?" O'Brien asked, referencing the Ducks' 56-21 trouncing of the Bulls in the Sun Bowl in El Paso. "Go look at that game. That was the spread that they were defending. I'm not saying anything about South Florida's defense, but if they're the gurus, we'd better go somewhere else."
Of course, USF had an answer. Here is defensive coordinator Wally Burnham.
NC State didn't make a bowl game last year -- OUCH. I absolutely love this stuff. What do we get from UConn-Louisville? Well, Randy Edsall said that Hunter Cantwell has a stronger arm and has been more accurate than Brian Brohm and Kragthorpe believes that Tyler Lorenzen is the Tim Tebow of the Big East.
"Here's the way I feel about it: He's right. We're not gurus," Burnham said. "On the other hand, we try to handle things professionally and not say anything ... with class, not say anything about anyone else's coaching staff. He can say what he wants to. The other thing, I forget what bowl game they were in. That's all I've got to say."
Louisville fans have obsessed over this call for a year. As legend goes, it was the reason that they weren't in a bowl game last year. I thought the play was ridiculous at the time. And the response from UConn wasn't very good at all if I remember. There were a lot of no comments and Larry Taylor wasn't made available. That didn't help.
But on point of fact, that play made it 7-7 in the third quarter.Louisville then took a 17-7 lead in the fourth quarter after a Donald Brown fumble was returned for a TD. Louisville then squandered the lead giving up two touchdowns.
You can't complain about a call when after the horrible call, you took control of the game by 10 points and then lost. It wasn't a game-changing call. It ruined the game, but it didn't lose the game for Louisville. That was their own doing.
- On to other things, I couldn't believe I did it, but I waited late for the Kentucky Hammer, Desi Cullen. Yes, I waited around for the punter. He never showed, he has class I guess. Though, it never stopped him from coming to interviews before.
- Had a nice conversation with DB Jasper Howard and he may start campaigning to get some time on offense. He didn't know how hard Darius Butler has lobbied for it. I asked WR Kashif Moore if he wanted to play defense. Moore smiled, "no." Offensive players never crossover. The only offensive player on the team that would like to play defense is D.J. Hernandez according to Moore. Brilliant analysis. Hernandez would have been a pretty good hard-hitting safety. Could he cover anyone? I don't know. He wiped some guy out against Temple though and he enjoys hitting.
Tuesday presser--lesson in hyperbole
Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe took it to another level on Tuesday. Kragthorpe is a good guy by all accounts and talking to him in Newport, it's hard not to like him. So, at least in the little I have to deal with him I find him genuine and approachable.
But, on Tuesday he said Lorenzen was "The Tim Tebow of the Big East."
Wow. Even Lorenzen scoffed at that. It's ridiculous. That is certainly a whopper. Asked again by the media what he meant by Tim Tebow of the Big East.
"I really feel that way," Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe said. "He is a big strong and physical player. He looks like a linebacker. They do a lot of things like
I'll let that sit for awhile.
OK, back to UConn.
--Something has to give between Huskies' 279 yards per game rushing and Louisville ranked No.2 in the country against the run. This is the battle.
--Moe Petrus is one of the most interesting players on the team. The 22-year old redshirt freshman guard, is a Canadian with a Haitian father and a white Canadian mother. His parents converted to Islam, so that's why Petrus' first name is Mohammed. He grew up in Montreal, but he has been on skates only twice in his life -- once at the Car Care Bowl. Go figure. Oh, he is also a pretty nasty offensive lineman.
--Brad Kanuch is back. Yes, I know he played the last two weeks, but he is actually smiling again. He is such a positive guy, but he was miserable to even look at when he was injured. He also said that he can get deep an expand the field and that the offense hasn't really tried to do that (and has had no need to).
--Talked with Jasper Howard about punt returning and look for a story in coming days. You know what? It's the hardest position on the field to play. Oh, he knows how to do a fair catch. He knows the rule well --word for word.
--Edsall didn't address the "Unfair Catch" by Larry Taylor last year. He passed and said that the Huskies were focusing on this week. Stunning candor.
--Last note...had a nice talk with Rob Lunn about his blog, which is a result of a class he is taking (an African Studies course). I'll post the link when I am done today on my UConn essentials. He went in and edited some of his comments and posts. Edsall talked with him on Monday about it. Lunn understands there is no filter and promises to be more careful. Lunn is a good writer and has a pretty good wit. The guy has a writers' eye. He sees the world like a writer.
Why do I say that? He wrote a post about how when the Huskies come through the smoke they can't see a thing. Nothing, they are blind and the smoke is cold. That is fire extinguisher stuff. Also, when the Huskies go in for the half he can smell the booze coming out of the student section.
My friends, that is insight I just can't give you 500 feet in the air in a pristine environment. I have more thoughts, but gotta pay the bills.

Tuesday press conference
Donald Brown and Heisman in the same sentence?
Edsall blushed at the mention. When asked about it later, Donald Brown cracked a smile and was speechless. He didn't want to talk about.
It's silly, Donald Brown and Heisman Trophy?
But, center Keith Gray sure has an opinion.
"I think the offensive line should win it."
---------------------------------------------------
That's the gist of the Tuesday press conference (and going to be the lede to my story) a lot about Robert Griffin (who Edsall compared to (Pat White) a lot about Donald Brown and the Heisman and a lot about Darius Butler.
That's to be expected after piling up 566 yards in three games with eight touchdowns, and is the second leading rusher in the nation. Brown didn't really know what to say. He did say he was going to be enjoying the time though.
"It could be gone in a minute."
There were a couple of national media there today. 3-0 and with a guy like Brown that is to be expected.
Here are some more notes:
*Andre Dixon is back at practice and I think he will play this week. How does that affect the carries? Brown is going to get 25 touches and they are absolutely going to find touches for Jordan Todman. Dixon is going to need some too.
*As far as Todman, his left shoulder is fine and he has come back much earlier than expected. He was supposed to be out 4-6 weeks, but was back in three to the amazement of the staff. Todamn said UConn was the first letter he ever received from a college and that had an effect. It was UConn and Purdue. The late arrival of Penn St. into the recruiting mix was real, but Todman felt more comfortable because UConn was involved all along.
*Lindsay Witten is still hurting with the knee and returned to practice. at best, the Huskies are hoping to get him in pass rushing situations. But, it's been two games and no Witten so we will see later in the week.
*Darius Butler made everyone laugh when he said he felt he could be as good a QB as Baylor's Robert Griffin. Butler wasn't joking either. That's what I like most about Darius, he is as confident and cocky as they come. He has little doubt he is the best basketball player on the team, he thinks he can play major college quarterback right now, and he thinks he can be a game-breaker on offense. Why should we tell him no? Also, Edsall mentioned that he asked Butler if he was tired playing offense defense and special teams. Butler said no and that satisfied Edsall. Butler said Tuesday that "he wouldn't tell the truth anyway."
When I talked to Darius this summer he told me a great story how when his mother came up to watch him play his first game she was a little puzzled at the end of the game. Why was he on the bench so much? Of course, it's because Butler played defense not offense. Now, the coaching staff is trying to find ways to keep him off the field. I have a feeling he is going to see more time as the season goes on.
*I asked Keith Gray about how to market Donald brown for the Heisman. Typically, there are posters, key chains, DVDs and websites set up by schools to promote the candidacy (An example, I got about 15 Darren McFadden notebooks at my house). Gray had a good idea: "Free UPS shipping." Yes, what can Brown do for you? Touchdowns of course.
Be back late if I can, on the desk helping out with high schools tonight. See ya'll later.

Tuesday presser
Of course, Randy Edsall pushed the Temple-UConn "robbed" catch (at least according to Temple) to the backburner, or tried too anyway.
"I am not worried about last year's game. Only this year's game...."I have enough concerns about our team this year. That is what my focus is and my job is. I don't every worry about other (teams)." (Note: Will transcribe and cleanup for clarity later.)
When asked a follow up later about dodging the question on yesterday's Big East conference call Edsall turned red and smiled.
"Yes, and I will today too."
Another backdoor question about getting the "calls" came up, and the coach smiled and shook his head. Can't wait for Louisville week. They blame Larry Taylor for their loss on Sunday.
Al Golden was a little more forceful about the impact of last year's game:
"Zero. Absolutely nothing. It has nothing to do with this game."
Looks like Temple marketing didn't get the memo. The Justice video was well-received by some UConn players.
Tyler Lorenzen was grilled on the play. He said he hasn't talked about since it happened.
"The (does Larry Taylor wave) took over."
Now that was funny.
News: Brad Kanuch working on the depth chart this week. He is going to be taking snaps with the first and second team and they will see where he is.
RB Andre Dixon will play. Right ankle is hurt, but he is a go this week. Aaron Basgby No. 2 on the depth chart at safety. DE Lindsay Witten will play (shoulder). G Alex LaMagdelaine could be out awhile with shoulder surgery. Tre Tonsing moves to guard to backup, Gary Bardzak is now second on depth chart behind center Keith Gray. Jordan Todman is "week-to-week", which means we won't be seeing him this week.
Lot of CT kids on the temple roster. They all have played pretty well including Windsor's Terrence Knighton. I always liked Terrence from his high school days. Nice to see he carved out a good career there.

Working weekend Part 2 -- Sunday Presser
Anyhow, Hofstra.
Randy Edsall took out every cliche and platitude in the book for this one. And, I mean every single cliche and talking point:
"We want to win a Big East championship. We want to win one game at a time, and really focus on that. Last week doesn't matter this week....Be best we can be.”
Then he brought up the "they all count and this one is as important as any other" (don't think this is a fan storm the field game, is it?). It reminded me a bit of Bull Durham when Nuke LaLoosh finally makes it to the Major Leagues.
I will give Edsall a bit of slack since he has been great for all of fall camp. Besides, what is he supposed to say? "We should beat Hofstra by 40 points and be unchallenged?" That would be refreshing.
Imagine if Joe Biden was a football coach?
Coach Biden: "Us lose to Hofstra? Oh come on, that is malarkey. Absolute malarkey! If we lose to Hofstra we should be looking for another job."
Football coaches aren't on the straight talk express. Especially when they are playing opponents they are expected to blow out. It happens to every fall to football coaches all over this country. Try interviewing a high school football coach. After the cliche fest however there was some good stuff.
While I hope Sunday presser's never happen again, the brunch was thoroughly enjoyable. It was french toast, sausage and pancakes that had me longing back to my college days. Nothing like falling out of your dorm bed Sunday morning (after a night of intense studying) in West Campus and making the trip over to McMahon dining hall for all you can eat lunch. Back to football.
- Injuries: Jordan Todman and Brad Kanuch are unlikely to play (no surprise).
- Safety Aaron Bagsby has returned to practice and Jerome Junior won't need surgery. Both have knee issues. That should help safety depth that Edsall admitted is much thinner than he anticipated. Jon Jean-Louis has a hip flexor and because of the chronic ankle injury to Greg Robinson, Kijuan Dabney is hedging positions and playing outside linebacker. The starting lineup is stacked, but if Dahna Deleston and/or Robert Vaughn go down it's pretty thin. Glenn Mourning, who hasn't sniffed playing time in his career, and walk-on Emmanuel Omokaro at the backups. The sooner Bagsby gets back the better this situation will be. I know they like Greg Lloyd in the middle, but considering the injuries and the way this has played out, I wonder if how the lack of anticipated depth at safety led to Deleston moving back from linebacker (Bagsby was hurt in the summer just prior to camp).
- Edsall mentioned he thought his team ran out of gas at the end of last year. He took that into account and learned for that. He wouldn't say how they are doing things this year, but without a doubt he did wonder what happened in the final 1/4 of the season.
- Rob Lunn gave his Big East championship ring to his father and his Meinieke Car Care Bowl ring to his grandfather.
- As I said yesterday, I like the vibe of this team.
