Live 365

Kashif Moore stood over the makeshift memorial outside the student union. Teammate Kijuan Dabney had a hoodie over his head.

The sweatshirts already had their good friend, Jasper Howard's picture, ironed into the front.

The pair stood with about 100 students, friends and teammates on Saturday night. There were about 30 football players and about 100 students who came out to the memorial. Pictures of Jazz were on poster board. Half of them were him playing football. Half of them were him in the dorm room.

On the poster had a simple message. Live 365.

Kashif Moore and Jazz were best friends and roommates. Moore was one of the six UConn players with him Sunday morning at the Student Union and Moore was there when Howard was stabbed. As a teammate tried to stop the bleeding in Howard's abdomen, Moore held his good friend in his arms.

"He was like in and out (of consciousness). I didn’t have time to be scared.”

Moore still can't believe this happened. It's been a 48 hour whirlwind.

“It’s still shocking. I haven’t been to sleep yet since I was with him and they told me. It felt like a dream, and it still feels like a dream. I can’t believe he is gone.”

"I was here with him (at the student union), I followed the ambulance to Windham Hospital. They took him by helicopter and told me where he is going right after that. I went to the hospital in Hartford."

"No one thought it would be that bad. I thought (Coach Edsall) was coming to tell us that, you know, he is going to survive and we were going to be able to visit him. About 20 something of us were there, we were waiting to go visit him."

"I can't tell you how sad this really hit me until I saw the poster and makeshift memorial. There was Jazz, full of life and spirit, at the place where it all went wrong."

There were people crying, hugging, but mostly outside the student year people were there searching for a reason why this happened.

I can't find a reason either. It's starting to hit here and I feel it. It's getting sadder by the minute.

Howard murder update

This is becoming an even sadder day. Howard's girlfriend is pregnant. Howard was really looking forward to becoming a father.

He won't get the chance.

Jasper Howard was stabbed at 12:30 a.m. and taken to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. Randy Edsall got the call and immediately went to Hartford. There were members of the team there and Edsall had to break the news to the team that Howard had died.

Edsall first learned of the situation after Jerome Junior (who wasn't there) called Tim Pendergast Director of Operations, who then called Edsall.

Edsall was called in by the doctor to identify the body, which he did. He then had to call Howard's mother and break the news. Edsall then went into the emergency room and told the teammates who were there.

"That is not in my job description to identify bodies, and call families," Edsall said.

There was a team meeting at 6 a.m., with 90 percent of the team there, where he broke the news to the team.

As far as the investigation, there were other football players there at the dance and plenty of witnesses. The other person who was stabbed is a UConn student, but they wouldn't say whether that student was another student athlete. That student has been released from the hospital.

The suspect is still at large. The police department doesn't feel that he is a threat to the university community, and that this was not a random act.  No details on what started precipitated the fight at the Student Union dance. The entire street the student union to Gampel is blocked off in Yellow tape.

I have a sick feeling in my stomach.

In Today's JI

Tuesday presser story on Jasper Howard and a note on Tyler "Tebow" Lorenzen.

Of note, I will be on NFL Network's College Football Now today. We'll see how it goes. I hate giving predictions, I better come up with one real quick.

Edit late: The great Santini has me on video. I can't bring myself to watch it, but Mrs. Silver liked it. I spent about an hour prepping for a 2 minute segment.
