When will the Huskies catch a break?
I can't believe I just watched the Huskies give away a game like that, again. They say that adversity makes you stronger but this is getting taken to the level of ridiculousness.
4 losses by 13 total points, four just stunning losses. You think it can't get anyworse than it does. The game stories are painful for me to write. The Huskies are a good team, but they are just missing something.
Think about what they overcame today...first home game since the murder of teamate Jasper Howard, a kick return TD to open the game for the 2nd consecutive week (just ridiculous), the loss of their starting quarterback for the season, a pair of missed field goals (don't know what's wrong with Teggart except mechanics) and three interceptions in rapid fashion by Zach Frazer.
Despite all that, some referee calls that Randy Edsall is incensed about (he said he was going to speak to the league about the officiating, (I will put words in his mouth and he thinks it was terrible and influenced) the backup QB throws for 333 yards, and they score a go ahead TD with 38 seconds left.
After all that, they give up an 81 yard TD to lose it. It was stunning to everyone involved and left you with a sick feeling.
The truth of the matter is they are really young and struggling in the secondary now, primarily at safety. Jerome Junior last week on the Devine push out, Aaron Bagsby this week taking a poor angle. It was a great throw by Tom Savage to Tim Brown who wasn't really open, but the fact that went for a TD is inexcusable.
Huskies have no one to blame but themselves. I don't think there is an answer at safety except for the players at strong safety to get better. If there were any radical options, I think the staff has to consider it. That position is getting burned big once a game, and at inopportune times.
The coaching is good. The talent is there, they are either too young or missing one playmaker.
I don't know where they go from here. Next two games are Cincinnati and Notre Dame. I cringe at the secondary playing against those 2 teams. The think the Huskies have to do is just play. There can be no expectation now, and I think a bowl bid is a somewhat of a longshot. I can't seem them splitting these next 4. It's pretty unfortunate because the Huskies have the makings of a pretty good team. Maybe next year.
Here is Randy Edsall on if they should be 8-0:
"We are 4-4, we are what we are," Edsall said. "That's all I know how to do. We'll just go back to work and get everybody to understand how every play is important. We made so many mistakes for the first three quarters and then to come back and put yourself in a position to win games like we did, and then to have one play there at the end -- To have that happen is just hard to describe."
I asked Kashif Moore, who was taking the loss hard, what he thought. Football is a funny game.
"I think that's the game of football," Moore said. "No one is going to be light or easy on us. That is the life of football. I appreciate that and respect that and can't take anything away from it. It makes us strong. We have to move on from this."
If only they could. But, how much can they take?
Onto some news:
*Zach Frazer returns at QB. I thought Frazer was extremely shaky early, but he caught fire late. That's a good sign. With Frazer it's mechanics and decision-making. He is turnover prone. I talked to him after and asked him about coming in that Cody went down and he said it's a tough break. Frazer said Endres was playing real well. Frazer has some talent, but he needs to get the ball down and MUST cut down those risky throws and interceptions. Frazer was 21-of-46 for 333 with 3 INTs and a TD. Much better late under pressure. GET THE BALL to Marcus Easley. Endres is a better decision-maker and right now to me is a better player. But, this is Frazer's chance to make it a QB competition this spring. Winning games will the thing that makes this a battle. But Endres has built up a lot of credits in my book and can be a terrific player.
*Robbie Frey hurt his shoulder. Frey has been terrific on kickoffs we will find out more about his status tommorrow.
* Marcus Easley is a revelation. I think the kid has pro potential. He has size, strength, speed hands and has another gear. I have no idea how he hasn't been playing the last two years. I don't get it.
*Kashif Moore and Ryan Griffin are terrific targets. I love Moore over the middle and Ryan Griffin, despite two drops, is an excellent tight end prospect.
*The Huskies had 481 yards of total offense after 501 a week prior and have lost.
