Zach Frazer is questionable but a touchy Randy Edsall said that Cody Endres is his starter Saturday at Pittsburgh. There are going to see how much work Frazer can do and whether he could be the backup this week. Frazer hasn't taken any snaps yet since the injury. Ryan Griffin is also questionable and will try and be ready for a backup role.
It couldn't be anymore clear. Edsall accused some of the media of trying to stir something up (no idea what or who he's talking about) and then answered the question as asked -- Endres is the starter, Frazer is going to push to see if he may be able to backup. They will figure it out after this week. So, Frazer is not in the mix this week, to start anyhow.
More importantly in my opinion, it would seem Scott Lutrus' stinger is still giving him a lot of trouble. He is doubtful for Saturday's game and will be re-evaluated this week again. He hasn't had any contact in two weeks.
I tried to ask if the injury is more serious than originally thought and Edsall said the trainers give him the info about how he is progressing. Nerve endings are tricky. No idea when he could get better.I would start to be worried now about that.
Team is much healthier than two weeks ago.
Got to pay the bills.

Thursday injury update -- No Lutrus
In a non-surprise, Scott Lutrus is out for Saturday's game against URI. Randy Edsall said it's the training staff telling him that he is out, but I got a feeling if it was the Orange Bowl he would be in there (just a hunch).
I am all for holding him out. He sat out the previous two games, no need to expose him to punishment Saturday. He has already missed two games and with an FCS team and a bye week, the prudent course is to hold him out and not expose him to future injury and let him heal fully. Of course, no one can say that because that would mean that UConn is "overlooking" Rhode Island (the horror). It's a game now, and that's fine, but how does he go from questionable to out without getting re-injured?
You don't. Opponent determines how much you are going to push him, and there is no need for Lutrus to play Saturday. I just can't write it any other way. The benefit of having Lutrus in there is not worth the risk of further injury against an FCS team. They should handle Rhode Island anyway.
I don't get why UConn can't say we are holding Lutrus out just to get him more rest for the long season. By saying we want Lutrus to be fully healed does in no way diminish Rhode Island. You want to respect your opponent, but don't overdue it. Don't elevate your opponent beyond what they are. To me, it's patronizing.
UConn can take Rhode Island seriously and be smart at the same time.
That said, Sio Moore, Mike Smith, Kashif Moore or probable. Lindsey Witten has had the GI (stomach virus) but is a go. The usual suspects are out including Frazer and Griffin,

Where is the linebacker depth?
Something a bit scary crossed my mind when I was having a detailed look at the depth chart while writing today's story in the JI. What happens if Scott Lutrus or Lawrence Wilson go down? What happens if Greg Lloyd needs a rest or a pick-up?
Where are all the linebackers?
I love Lutrus and Wilson, and I am sure Lloyd is a talent, but the dearth of depth at linebacker truly astounds me. I must say, I didn't see this one coming. C.J. Marck has a big rep but hasn't played a down. Aaron Bryant is a walk-on and Greg Robinson is limited. It's so shallow that Kijuan Dabney was moved from safety (which has its own depth problems, but at least has answers on the roster.).
On the offensive and defensive lines there is depth. Quarterback has depth, running back is loaded and when healthy, the secondary has depth. But, linebacker has some major top talent, but a very shallow underbelly.
Here is a note: Matt Ashmead is the only scholarship linebacker that is a junior or older (I think he has earned a schollie? Right?). It's a stunning lack of depth considering defensive linemen are tougher to find and they have depth there (at least at defensive end).
It just goes to show you, this team for all its returning starters is still very young.
Two days until the season opener.

In Friday's JI
In today's JI, a story on UConn's linebacker corps. New website and actually easy to navigate and read, check it out.
I think it is inevitable to go faster and quicker at the linebacker spot. I don't know how many times Danny Lansanah was in position to make a play and couldn't get there in time.
The one play that sticks with me is West Virginia's Pat White's TD run early in the third quarter against the Huskies. Lansanah had him contained for a short gain, but was unable to complete the play. White made the UConn defense look silly scampering in for the touchdown. That signaled the rout was on.
Lutrus can make that play, athletically anyhow. Moving Dahna Deleston to linebacker will also help with speed. He played close the line anyways and is comfortable. You do have to worry that a power running team may just try and power it down the Huskies' throat. The Big East is all about speed and play making ability offensively, and the Huskies have to find a way to match up.
