Second day thoughts

Back in CT. Sorry for no blogging update, but it was 1 am by the time I was finished in Athens, and I had an 1:30 drive to Columbus as well as a 6:45 a.m. flight. So, I am on fumes.

It wasn't the kind of opener that Randy Edsall was aiming for. Edsall is usually calm after games but I think he was a mix of angry and surprised at the miscues. He made a point of defending the wide receivers and said there were guys open (there were).I thought it was a bit of frustration showed for Edsall. He wasn't just upset at the miscues, but the lack of playmaking in the passing game bothered him. For those who didn't watch. The production was no different than last year, but I will say the offense can work if those throws were accurate.

UConn tried to throw it yesterday. Frazer was attempting 20 yard outs that Lorenzen and Hernandez would never even attempt to throw.The Huskies did stretch the field a couple of times and went veritcal. They weren't trying to dink and dunk.

That's where the frustration comes in. Frazer had some guys open and he missed them. The Mike Smith interception in the fourth quarter is inexcusable.Smith was in stride and had a step over the middle. That's not Smith's fault.  The worst throw a QB makes is high over the middle, followed closely by behind the receiver. High passes lead to picks, and throwing behind the receiver leads to tips and then the ball is up for grabs.

I am saying this before today's conference call where Edsall will downplay it, but I the coach was fired up enough and angry. I don't think he would allow that kind of inconsistency to continue this week. QB controversy? Maybe.

I thought the leash was going to be long for Frazer this year in the new offense, but turnovers change the story. If the turnovers continue, he will find his way to the bench.  Frazer has a strong arm and he needs to harness it. I don't know much about decision making of Frazer Saturday (I'll let the pro tell me what I saw) but when he did make the right read the pass wasn't delivered where it should have been.

I remember Terry Bradshaw hammering home to me watching NFL that the most important attribute of a QB is accuracy followed by strong arm.What's the use of an inaccurate rocket?

Would I be concerned? Yes. The offense is going to work, but can Frazer be accurate enough? I have to believe he has played much better in spring and fall camp because Cody Endres hasn't sniffed the first team. Endres struggled with accuracy issues also last year (see West Virginia). I don't think you can pin this on the wide receivers. I thought they did a decent job yesterday.

One thing I know for sure, Edsall isn't going to allow the QB position to cost them another season. If it comes down to it, they will throw the kitchen sink at it. If Frazer looks like this against UNC, I don't think he will last the game.

The Huskies have to figure out where they are by the time they play at Pittsburgh in October.

Frazer game time decision -- Edsall speaks on Cuse

Zach Frazer is a gametime decision on Saturday. Every question on Frazer and the QB play was answered with "Zach Frazer is a gametime decision," coach Randy Edsall.

Edsall wouldn't say much more than that.

What we didn't get an answer on whether Zach was medically cleared to practice and how much he has practiced. No answer on the question. Edsall wouldn't say how much Cody Endres has played with the No. 1s, and if Frazer is cleared to play, if he in fact will do so assuming he has had a shortened week of preparation.

It's worth noting that Zach has been in the film study and going to class which would indicate a less severe concussion, oops, "head injury."

Edsall doesn't lie, I can tell you that. He plays with degrees of the truth and is vague to create confusion and is rarely candid -- but he doesn't tell flat out lies. If Frazer is a gametime decision, then I honestly believe there is still a chance Frazer could play.

My gut? This is what blog is for right? If I had a gun to my head --- Cody Endres.

Edsall is a creature of preparation, if Frazer hasn't prepared, even if he is cleared to play, Edsall will go with Endres. So, all signs point to Endres, but it's frustratingly murky for reporters.

Also, a New York Times story today linked Edsall to Syracuse and says he has been contacted about the opening (wait, soon to be opening in the worst kept secret in the country) up at his alma mater.

Edsall was angry about this one:

"I don’t deal in speculation. I want you and everyone to know that I haven’t been in contact by any college, university, NFL or people about any job. End of story.”

Lastly, DT Brandon Dillon is out, and RB Nate Sheer is also out. Sheer is a third string long snapper.
