Frazer No. 1 quarterback

In the most anti climatic decision in sports history, in an email, Zach Frazer was named the winner of the quarterback derby this spring at UConn.

Frazer is the QB, Todman is the running back, and every other offensive position is OR except fullback. Figures.

Here is the UConn release and depth chart.

STORRS, Conn. (April 28, 2009) – University of Connecticut head football coach Randy Edsall has released a depth chart for the Husky team coming out of spring practice.

“This is where we are after spring ball and headed into summer workouts and preseason camp,” says Edsall. “Some positions need to be solidified and there can be changes made to this before we have a gameday depth chart for our opener against Ohio University on September 5.

“Zach Frazer is our number one quarterback coming out of spring practice and he has earned that spot. However, as we continue over the summer and into fall camp, there is still competition at that position, like there is at each spot on the team.”

Free agents galore

Here are the confirmed signings (at least by me).

First, we got Julius Williams to the Jaguars.

Dahna Deleston is headed to the Bears. Deleston had the Pats on one phone and the Bears on the other. Chicago's special teams coach loved him, and he felt that was a better opportunity.

Manchester's Kory Sheets is headed to the 49ers. He slipped out of the draft because the purdue coaching staff buried him to scouts. He had 6 teams after him. Sheets wasn't a happy camper until after he signed a free agent deal.

Chris Baker of Windsor is headed to the Broncos. He was disappointed he didn't get drafted. He was told by Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin that it was a combination of him transferring, getting trouble at Penn St. and the fact he came out a year early. He was a big risk. Baker is fine with it. He chose Denver over Pittsburgh because Denver drafted no DTs.

That's it for me. Dahan Deleston summed up my thoughts on the draft.

"I am never watching this thing again."

Knighton selected third round!

Terrance Knighton was taken in the third round. He was hoping to get drafted, but he is a tremendous, if raw, talent. Jaguars took him. Tremendous opportunity.

Update 2:36 p.m.: Just stopped by his grandmother's home and chatted for a bit. He was thinking 4-5th round, but when big tackles started getting taken he moved up. He was in for a long day, and it was a short one. He saw his name, and then he heard from Jacksonville. He is going down Thursday.

As far as his good friend Chris Baker from Hampton, they are looking at 5th-6th round. He's falling because of the Penn St. issues. UConn's Julius Williams is also possible 6th or 7th.

NFL Wrap

It's been a long day.

On the call with Randy Edsall you could hear the pride in his voice.

UConn, with 4 players drafted in the first day of the NFL Draft. Hell, I didn't hear a single name from Michigan, Notre Dame or Miami. Go figure.

Donald Brown to the Colts. Butler to the Patriots, an incredible fit. And then Beatty to my Giants and Cody Brown to the Cardinals.

That is stuff that isn't supposed to happen. 4 picks in the top 64? How did they go 8-5 (won't answer that now...)

Here is Edsall:

"To have the 27, 41, 60, 63 pick in this draft says a lot about the player themselves and coaches. It does a lot for our program. It is a great day."

Here is Donald Brown, who wore a UConn shirt and had a UConn blanket on his couch that all could see on ESPN.

"It’s an honor. I wear that shirt today with great pride being from the University of Connecticut. There will be many more first round picks coming from that program.”

Brown is going to Indy tomorrow for a presser.

Randy Edsall and Bill Polian talked extensively about Brown when he was deciding to come out. They never did talk to Brown. There were rumblings though. A certain team Edsall didn't identify (cough Cardinals) were concerned that Brown wouldn't be there and that Indy would take them. These teams did their research, they just didn't actually talk to Brown.

Is that a good spot or what?

As far as Butler, that's a great pick and Darius is ecstatic according to Edsall. Butler is going to a great spot. Here is Edsall on Butler.

"To have Darius up at New England with Darius it’s a great fit for Darius,” Edsall said. "“Darius has all the ingredients to go up there. He has all the ability, depends on what they want to do with them. He can do anything that they want him to do.”

Edsall also talked extensively to the Giants about Will Beatty and Cody Brown. Beatty goes to a place where he doesn't have to start.

Will has tremendous ability, and backing up Diehl for a year is perfect. To have a guy of Beatty's ability to grow into a position is tremendous for both players.

Edsall heard from the Cardinals right before they were going to draft Cody Brown. Cody Brown was a player they liked a lot. They isn't a huge need for Cody Brown in Arizona, and that means they most have liked him an awful lot.

Edsall said that tommorrow he is hoping that Dahna Deleston and Julius Williams get drafted. He said that Keith Gray and Tyler Lorenzen are also in good shape at getting camp invites. \

That's it for me until tomorrow.

Second round fever

Sorry, been writing and doing some stuff.

Butler 41 to Pats,

Will Beatty 60 to Giants (oh yeah) and then Cody Brown at 63.

Count it, 4 first day picks for the Huskies. More in a little bit.

Brown stunned

Donald Brown saw the number on his cell phone and was trying to figure out what area code. His heart fell into his stomach.

Here comes the voice:

"Do you want to play for the Indianapolis quotes?"

Brown: "Yes, sir."

Colts coach Jim Caldwell was on the other line. Brown was a Colt.

----------------------

That's my lede. Brown was nervous all day, it was pretty crazy day for him. He played golf and took his mom out.

He hadn't heard a word from the colts since the combine, where all he talked to was his sports psychologist.

Brown was real kind to do the call. He is heading to Indy tomorrow for a press conference.

I'll be back later.

Brown to Colts

Donald Brown heads to the Colts as a first round pick. Terrific spot for Brown. Can you get in a better spot if you are a running back?

Great spot for Brown. Wow!

NFL Draft blog

No live blog, don't intend on paying this much attention.

That said, I love Jet fans. Never happy. While everyone is cheering there are two guys who want to commit suicide. Why even go to the draft? No one is every happy.

Awful that it starts at 4, but, it is moving faster. The old draft was awful.

Anyhow, check out me on twitter @johnfsilver for quick updates. I will blog after too.

Draft day

Draft day. Never thought this would be an important day when I started covering uconn football. Busy day, but I am out with the family until the draft. D Brown planned on golfing and the beach before going home at 4. Butler will have a draft party in Ft Laudeddale with high school teammates. We'll catch up with them later. Edsall has a conference call around 10 pm.

Huskies about to get a national profile. Don't underestimate the impact of this with recruits.

NFL Draft look

Here is a quick rundown on what's in store the next two days.

Donald Brown

Position: Running back
School: UConn
Hometown: Atlantic Highlands, N.J.
Draft projections: Late first round to early second round.
Comment: Brown is considered one of the top three backs in the NFL
Draft slotted third behind Chris Wells of Ohio State and Knowsho
Moreno on Georgia. Brown is a strong candidate to get taken in the
20s. Possible landing spots include the Patriots at 21, the Eagles at
23 and potentially Cardinals at 31. If he isn’t a first round pick,
he isn’t expected to last long in the second round. Brown rushed for
2,083 yards this season and is the Huskies’ all-time leading rusher
with 3,800 yards.

Darius Butler
Position: Cornerback
School: UConn
Hometown: Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Draft projections: First round to high second round.
Comment: Butler possess great speed and closing ability and could be
the first UConn player drafted in the mid first round. Projections
have Butler as high as teens to a low of the early rounds. May be the
best pure athlete UConn has produced. Generally listed as one of the
top five cornerbacks in the draft. Cousin of Ravens running back
Willis McGahee. Patriots watched intently at pro day and he recently
visited the Vikings.

Cody Brown
Position: Defensive end-Linebacker
School: UConn
Hometown: Coral Springs, Fla.
Draft projections: late second round to late third round.
Comment: Brown was a defensive end for the Huskies and had 10 ½ sacks
as a senior, but he projects as a pass rushing outside linebacker in
a 3-4 scheme at 6-3 250 pounds. Brown has explosive ability to get to
the quarterback and has shown an ability to drop into coverage. With
more teams moving to 3-4 fronts on defense. Outside
linebackers/defensive end hybrids like Brown are in much higher
demand.

Will Beatty
Position: Left tackle
School: UConn
Hometown: York, Pa.
Draft projections: second round.
Comment: Beatty is a late bloomer who had only one other college
offer coming out of high school. He has excellent size at 6-7, 290
pounds, but it is his athletic ability and footwork that has caught
scouts’ attention. Beatty has to improve his upper body strength, but
has the footwork and athletic ability to become a franchise caliber
left tackle. Left tackles are in high demand. Eight were taken in the
first round last year and five are expected this year. Beatty would
follow soon thereafter.

Julius Williams
Position: Defensive end-linebacker
School: UConn
Hometown: Decator, Ga.
Draft projections: sixth round to seventh round.
Comment: Williams is a major riser in the draft after a stunning
workout at UConn’s pro day. Williams, a converted linebacker, figures
to mirror Brown, 6-2 260 pounds benched press 225 pounds 36 times at
the pro day and had a 42 inch vertical leap. He may have moved
himself into late round consideration and could be converted back to
linebacker in a 3-4 system.

Dahna Deleston

Position: Strong safety-linebacker
School: UConn
Hometown: East Hartford
Draft projections: Late sixth and seventh round to priority free agent
Comment: Deleston has come on with his workouts and at 6-1 217 pounds
with 4.45 speed is a big, fast and athletic hard-hitting safety. He
is best when he is in run support and teams like his versatility and
ability to play special teams. He is more of a hybrid between safety
and outside linebacker and his best bet to make a team will be
special teams. Deleston has talked extensively with the Jaguars who
hold four picks in the sixth and seventh rounds. The Patriots also
have 11 picks in the seven round draft and are interested.

Area players

Kory Sheets
Position: Running back
School: Purdue
Hometown: Manchester
Draft projections: Middle round draft pick.
Comment: Sheets had a productive senior season with the Boilermakers
with 1,131 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also was a threat out of the
backfield with 37 catches. Sheets is 5-11 and had the third fastest
time among running backs at the combine. Sheets can be used as a kick
returner and has speed and game-breaking ability. He could be
anywhere from a third round pick to late in the draft.

Chris Baker

Position: Defensive lineman
School: Hampton
Hometown: Windsor
Draft projections: middle to late round draft pick
Comment: Baker, 6-3 320 pounds, had a stellar season at Hampton after
transferring in from Penn St in the fall. At Hampton, Baker had 69
tackles and 8½ sacks with 16½ tackles for a loss. He projects as a
3-4 defensive end or a defensive tackle in a 4-3 system. Baker came
out a year early from the draft.

Terrance Knighton
Position: NT
School: Temple
Hometown: Windsor
Draft projections: Seventh round pick to priority free agent
Comment: Knighton had a solid career at Temple, but is still raw and
has plenty of room to develop. Knighton is 6-4 at 307 pounds and is
projected to play the nose tackle in a 3-4 defense. Knighton has
tremendous strength and athletic ability and with his combination of
size and strength could turn into a steal late. Knighton had 54
tackles last year for the Owls.

Lutrus arrested

UConn captain and linebacker Scott Lutrus was arrested Friday morning for allegedly interfering with an officer outside Celeron Square Apartments. His older brother Kyle was also arrested. It was Lutrus' 21st birthday on Thursday.

Lutrus was released on $500 non-surety bond.

Just got police report for now folks.

Update: Hearing some conflicting things and nothing from UConn yet. Here is how the arrest log reads:

"Officers were dispatched to a report of a fight on Hunting Lodge Road by the entrance to Celeron Square Apartments. Upon arrival, officers attempted to detain Lutrus. Lutrus resisted and began fighting with the officers. Lutrus became loud and combative while dealing with officers."

That's pretty much it in the log. So many questions trying to get answers to. As far as Lutrus, it's embarrassing for him because he is a captain. Interfering with a police officer and a $500 non-surety bond is a slap on the wrist stuff. Just getting arrested is punishment enough. Kyle Lutrus was released on a written promise to appear.

For example, some kid named Nikita Guryakov (who is not an athlete) was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer and he had a $100,000 bond. Two officers went to the hospital to get their injuries looked at. Think about that and what is or isn't news. Not saying Lutrus' isn't news, he was arrested a week after being named captain of the team. But there is a certain degree of unfairness going on here. I will try and get Lutrus' side.

BTW, if you gave me 100 players on the team and told me to that one was arrested. I would guess 99 names before Lutrus.

I'll see what I can dig up and confirm.

Update 2: After some emails: I have no evidence that Lutrus was arrested unfairly. I just have a lot of questions about the report, some of it doesn't make sense, and what were the circumstances of the fight. Desmond Connor from the courant has some updates, but I haven't confirmed any of it about what they were doing there.

NFl Draft week avalanche

Yes, it's NFL Draft week and this is going to get crazy. I have been tracking down players and agents and what not for the last week trying to get a feel.

What's striking to me is how many guys are going to get NFL opportunities out of Connecticut. That, and the difference between being a Donald Brown at the top, and an undrafted guy like a Dahna Deleston. It's a different world for both.

Donald Brown spoke to us today as part of a teleconference setup by the Connecticut Sportswriters' Alliance. Brown is being honored at the Gold Key Dinner on Sunday for being the Athlete of the Year.

He won't be at the dinner because he will be heading to someplace to start his pro career, and that is making him anxious. Brown has been on the high-life circuit traveling the country, doing media interviews, and hanging out with Tiki Barber in New York.

Don is a pro already. Always polite and polished (except when he loses) he is going to host a leadership contest out at RedBank Catholic this week. Brown may be the most polished and professional player in this draft. No maintenance.

As far as the rest, Darius Butler is traveling all over the country and I caught up with him yesterday. He is thinking maybe first round, definitely second though. It depends on how the draft unfolds. He will be home in Florida for the draft.

Beatty and Cody Brown may also go on Saturday which would be amazing for UConn.

That's just the start. Just in the central Connecticut area others set to get drafted or at worst be free agent signings are five more guys.

Windsor defensive tackles Chris Baker (Hampton by way of Penn St.) and Terrence Knighton (Temple) were boyhood friends. Knighton dragged Baker out on the football field as a sophomore in high school. Baker figures to be a DT or a 3-4 DE after a great year at Hampton. He was kicked out of Penn St. for a much-publicized fight. Baker maintains that it was miss identification and he was in the wrong place. He is still miffed he got kicked out, but he is looking at a middle round to late selection. He is 6-3 320.

Knighton looks to be a late round selection and can play the nose in a 3-4. He is 6-3 310 pounds about. He is still in school at Temple and will be around there Saturday.

Caught up with UConn and East Hartford's Dahna Deleston and they are looking at 5th, 6th 7th round pick. If not, a priority free agent.8 teams are looking at him and the Jaguars flew him down. The Patriots also have a lot of interest . Watch the Jaguars with 4 picks in the 6th and 7th rounds. They have been watching Deleston since November.

Also talked to Manchester native Kory Sheets, who is back in town and waiting to see where he lands. He projects as a 3rd round pick to late rounds. If he is a priority free agent he is a steal.

Sheets backed off a UConn commit and Donald Brown ended up starring in Storrs. Sheets also chose Purdue over Iowa, which had Shaun Green. Funny how things works out. Sheets said he was a bit disappointed in his career and he did have much-publicized run-ins with the coach. Sheets still can't figure out why he didn't click with the coaching staff. Here is Sheets on how he compares with Chris Wells of Ohio State and Shaun Greene from Iowa.

"I can run with them,"Sheets said. "They were in an offense that ran the ball most of the time. I was in an offense that passed the ball most of the time. I wonder what I could have done if I was in a running offense."

Julius Williams is also in the late round free agent category.

That's nine guys from Connecticut. 6 UConn guys which is amazing, and three more from Central Connecticut.

Also talking to some agents got an update on former UConn guys. Danny Lansanah is doing well with the Packers and will have a prime shot to backup at linebacker after making the roster last year. Also, Donald Thomas' foot is healed and he should be ready to go come camp.

I still have more work to do. Talk to you all soon.

Spring game

Yes, I am here. If you are wondering why updates are sparse it's because I was in the middle of selling my home, which closed Friday.

I almost didn't make it here. I went in a polo shirt, slacks and shoes to the town dump to drop off a washer. I went the wrong way and found myself in some cut up brush and had to be directed out of the place by the attendant. Do you know how silly I felt at the town dump in pants and a shirt with a laptop and blue tooth head set? Maybe the guy guessed I don't make that run too often. The guy thought I was some kind of environmental auditor or something.

Anyhow, it's a beautiful day and I wont be updating much. I am meeting a couple of people at the game and will visit and walk around the stadium. You don't get that chance during the season.

As far as scoring, I won't even try. The Edsall-Stableford scoring system is complex. Whomever wants Edsall to win will win this game.

Anxious to see the offense. Captains are Desi Cullen, Robert McClain, Scott Lutrus and Anthony Sherman.

The Kentucky Hammer a captain? He will be the most quoted punter in the FBS. I love it.

Tuesday update

Quick update have to pack for a move. First off, Zach Frazer feels he has won the job at qb. That's news to Randy Edsall who was none to pleased at the sentiments. Only 1 opinion matters however and it's not mine or Zach's. Offense is coming along well and gerrard sheppard made some nice catches. Kashif Moore had a terrible practice coming off a strong scrimmage on Saturday.

Brad Kanuch was hurt and it didn't look good. He was shoved from behind on a dumb play by blidi wren Wilson and he fell on his shoulder. He almost ran over Shawn Courchesne from the Courant in the process. He went down and needed to be helped up. Edsall wasn't happy at the shove.

No shows for practice were todman, Campbell and gratz. Missed classes the culprit. Jimmy Bennett won't play Saturday, he will be at a funeral.

Later,

Tuesday practice -- I'm back!

Did you think I forgot all of you?

I know practice updates have been scarce from me and I do have to apologize. With the hoops teams running to the final four it has put a lot of strain on the desk, which I was moved to last summer. So, I have been heavy on the editing end of the spectrum. That has taken up the bulk of my time. I wanted to get out to practice to get a better feel and here are some thoughts from Tuesday's practice. Hey, I can't work 18 hour days...or can I?

QB: I didn't see Saturday's scrimmage, but by other accounts the QB was a little better today. I know Randy Edsall isn't going to name a starter till the end, if that, but in my opinion Zach Frazer seems to be a bit ahead at this point? I like his demeanor and he seems to be more confident with the offense. I didn't watch the second scrimmage however so take it with a grain of salt. Still, he threw a bad INT today to a linebacker that would have been taken back to the house. Endres did the same when he allowed the corner to jump a route and take it in for a score. Those are game-killers. But, overall as a whole, Edsall said he is happy with the progress of the offense.

The strengths and weaknesses of both are still prevalent. Frazer has to make better decisions and watch his mechanics, though I like his increased mobility. Endres throws a nice deep ball, but struggles with accuracy on the intermediate passes. It's not that he is missing receivers, but on a 7 yard pass you want to hit the receiver in stride. It's where he is putting the ball, not necessarily that he is bouncing it all over the place (which he isn't). It's all correctable. Both are much better pure throwers than Tyler Lorenzen.

As far as the defense, I like the way it's shaping up. Lindsey Witten looks primed for a big year. He wants to get up to 255 pounds. He played as a true frosh at 205. I actually got him to crack a semi smile which took quite a bit of work. Intense on the field. Edsall loves his potential as a pass rusher, he just n3eds to play lower to the ground (don't you love football terms?) to play the run better. Witten needs to be an every down defensive end.

Linebacker is loaded and the secondary looks good. Strong safety Jerome Junior hurt an ankle today at strong safety, but it doesn't look to be serious.

Other notes:

*Isiah Moore took some snaps with the first team. Isiah Moore has been one of the risers in camp. He didn't play much last year, but he is moving into contention for a spot in the rotation. I asked Moore if he felt like a forgotten man and he said "Yes." Moore has speed and ability and he he knows competition is fierce. Edsall said his performance is why he is moved up the depth chart. Moore knows that there are three receivers coming in as recruits including Dwayne Difton, who Moore called "A 4 star." And he knows that this is going to be a make or break spring. So far he is making it. He is a small receiver, probably about 5-9 to 5-10, but he has speed and ability.

*Keenan Chambers had a cast around his right wrist and is likely done for the spring. That would mean he is a likely redshirt for the upcoming season. As far as the other DEs who came in to camp. Both Jesse Joseph and Trevardo Williams will push for time as true frosh's. Joseph is ahead of Williams at this point.

*Jimmy Bennett is pushing to get into the starting lineup as a redshirt frosh at tackle. Bennett is massive and was a highly regraded recruit out of high school. Seniors Mike Hicks and Dan Ryan should be wary, the kid can play. Bennett is still behind a bit in the weight room. He is strong, but it's natural strength according to Edsall. The staff still wants to get him stronger in the weight room.

*The format of the Blue White game is still unresolved. Edsall is leaning towards 1st team offense and second team defense vs the other side. That would be most fair. Edsall evaluates the spring game, it's just not a fun exhibition.

Will a depth chart come out? Edsall is in no hurry. Why not? First off, as a practical matter there is a working depth chart but it is just not publicly released. Why not? Just one of those irrational coach things. I don't think it is held for any other reason that at this moment that Edsall doesn't want it released? I have no idea why, but it's not really a huge deal with me at this time since all the practices are open. You can get a working one by just looking at the field.

Gotta go and pay the bills,

John

Dabney arrested

Junior safety/linebacker Kijuan Dabney was arrested Sunday morning for an altercation at the student union.

The Courant has more details here:

I have to head into the office to get the police report, which is on my desk. I'll update if I can get into the office later. I was unable to make practice Tuesday so I am unsure if he practiced. Will try and find out his status.
