Tranghese to step down

Mike Tranghese is making it official, he will step down as Big East commish in 2009.

Boston Globe reported it today, conference call at 1:30 p.m. Should be interesting what happens with the Big East. Tranghese has been such a big part of it, but I wonder how long it can hold together at 16 teams and only 8 football teams.

Probably a good time to retire. All in all, Tranghese he did an excellent job keeping the conference together after the raid.

welcome back, john.

I agree that Tranghese did a good job post-raid. I'm not so sure how good of a job he did prior to the raid, though. He appeared to have done enough to grow the resumes of BE football and bball. He was in the process of kicking a pathetic Temple team out of the football conference and replacing it with a UConn program known for its successes in several different sports. But did Swofford catch him with his pants down, or were his hands really tied as far as the conference makeup goes? Should he have forced ND's hand? All I know is that he failed to make BE football into a conference that VT and UM truly wanted to belong to. I don't know if he could have ever succeeded at that, but I do know that he's at least given the next commissioner the chance to build the BE into something bigger (by keeping the BCS berth). Your thoughts on his pre-raid performance?

Pre raid? I don't think there was a solitary thing he could have done. Yes, they were caught off guard. I think Cuse and BC being a part of the original plan really hurt.

Miami was hell bent on leaving, and BC and Cuse wanted to follow because they were unsure of the future.

There was a lot of concern that the Big East would lose its BCS bid, and Miami and BC and eventually Va Tech, wanted to be certain they were in a conference that did that. Miami makes sense in the ACC. BC makes little sense, and I think they know it. Va Tech was political.

I think he did a great job keeping football together temporarily. I think eventually there has to be a split. But, the conference is viable, and when you take a blow that was meant to be fatal and survive that is a good job.

Football coaches want to force ND in. Tranghese is smarter than that. The bowl ties-ins to the Gator and Sun are contingent on ND being a part of it. That is good for the Big East.

Eventually, the Big East will split and ND will be forced to choose. We are talking at least a decade out at least, but I think you will see some sort of Eastern FB conference eventually.
