Keys to the West Virginia game

Without further ado, here are the keys to the West Virginia game:

1. No early turnovers

UConn can’t lose the turnover battle or have an early breakdown that gets West Virginia rolling. Most of the time the team the team that wins the turnover battle wins that game, that nothing new, against West Virginia, where the Huskies’ margin is so small, a turnover, especially an early one deep in their own end, could prove devastating.

2. Hit Pat White

The Huskies don’t want to be dirty, but they have to be aggressive going after WVU QB Pat White. When White has the ball the Huskies have to make him pay. When Pat White is out of the game the Mountaineers become shockingly ordinary. In the two losses the Mountaineers had last year, White left injured in both games. White isn’t the most durable player, and being physical and punishing him when he does have the ball is the best way to slow him down at worst, and chase him from the game at best.

3. Make a play on special teams

Be it a big kickoff or punt return, or perhaps forcing the Mountaineers to operate deep in their own territory, UConn needs to get something extra out of the special teams today. It could be something as simple as field position, or perhaps a turnover or a kick return. Anyway you look at it, the Huskies are going to need to make a play in all three phases.

Addendum:

UConn can't commit turnovers. West Virginia is 46-2 when it wins the turnover battle. Was does that tell me? West Virginia is the superiorly talented team that loses when they hurt themselves. UConn can't win if they are in the minus category in turnovers. Even one bad turnover could turn this game negative for the Huskies.

I will admit however, I am increasingly liking the Huskies chances. I went on NFL Network and said 30-20 WVU on Wednesday. I am inclined to think the game will be closer. I just don't like the numbers West Virginia's offense has put up this season.

The question will be, was WVU's game against Auburn an anomaly, or did they just remember who they are?

I don't know, it will be fun to find out.

In Friday's JI

Working on advance stories, I have some thoughts and I want to take something back.

Today's notebook is nothing more than a coherent story on what we thought about yesterday. Enjoy.

For the money, I say Cody Endres starts with Zach Frazer available with an awfully quick trigger.

Game keys and more later...Happy Halloween.

Can't wait to go out tonight...with my 2-year old of course.

In Today's JI

Almost forgot, sorry it's late. Just a story on UConn's freshmen coming through against Cincinnati.

http://journalinquirer.com/articles/2008/10/30/sports/doc4909f77d35b85508604947.txt

I was looking at the participation chart, a lot of youngsters on special teams. The Jordan Todman touchdown drive really sticks out for me. All freshmen on that drive.

Thursday update

Well, Minister of Information Randy Edsall was in top form on Thursday splicing words and being careful. Top form. If he ever wants to leave football he should be a consultant for some politicians.

It really is an art form. Why do I say that?

Who is starting at QB?

"It will be a game-time announcement."

Cornered a bit on his careful choice of words, Edsall said:

“Decisions are made. Anyone who needs to know what the decisions are know what they are.”

I'll put it through the Edsall translator: "I have already made a decision on who the quarterback is going to be and I am not going to tell you, because, you don't need to know."

On perhaps having a quick trigger on the QB position and switching mid game.

"I know that we have played 3 quarterbacks this year. Hopefully, we don’t have to play four. It’s good to have guys that do have experience.”

About Darius Butler and his full time move to wide receiver that was reported yesterday:

“I have no comment on that. I don’t know what you are talking about, but I have no comment on it.”

Later on he mentioned that either Robert McClain or Terry Baltimore could start. Don't know why that was thrown out there.

Smoke and mirrors everywhere.

As far as injuries. There is nothing new or significant. All the banged up guys are playing. Zach Frazer is healthy and could play if Edsall chooses.

That's the short take.

Got to play the bills...

Random thoughts

Can we all take away the Manager of the Year award for Joe Maddon yet?

Did someone tell him it was Game 5 of the World Series. Surely, he understands that just because the game was suspended in the sixth inning doesn't mean you have to manage the game from the sixth inning like a two day break didn't happen.

The Rays sat for two days waiting to play this game. And after 48 hours, the best Maddon could do was bring back Grant Balfour? Then, Chad Bradford in the seventh? Chad Bradford...

Where was David Price? Chad Bradford was out there looking at the pen for Price. He couldn't believe he was in.

Maddon made Charlie Manuel look like a genius. You know how hard that is to do?

Maddon plays this aloof professor quoting Albert Camus of all people. It's fitting their season ended in the rain with inaction, exasperation, and disorientation. It was an "existential-like" end to the season for the Rays. Maddon should stop reading Camus and start reading Baseball America.

Joe the Manager isn't the real deal either. All frauds I tell you...

How nice was no pregame show yesterday? It only took millions of dollars to keep McCarver's opinion off the air. Who would have thought? We are starting a collection for next year.

Baseball should go to 4 inning playoff game.

Did they sell beer at the game on Wednesday. It was after the sixth inning, so did those Philly fans have to go dry?

Who makes that decision? You think Brad Lidge had pressure.

The NBA started and I am one of the few NBA nuts out there though we are going. If I had to come back as any pro athlete, I would want to be an NBA player who never plays. Brian Scalibrine is living a charmed life. All you do is hang out, shoots some hoops in the pregame, and sit and watch the game. Hmm,sounds like a lot what I do. even better, I would like to be a hurt player. Then you don't even have to get changed. Pervis Ellison is in the HOF in my book.

Anyhow, I saw Greg Oden turn his ankle and I just want everyone to know give him a break. Anyone approaching senior citizenship age is liable to hurt there bones.

OK, cheap shot, I know . But I got to do a group interview with greg Oden a couple of years ago when he was at Ohio State. I was down in Lexington, K.Y. in the first round covering CCSU, so I went to talk with Oden and it was one of the more bizarre interviews I can remember.

Oden looks in his 40. He could be Bill Russell's twin. But there he was being interviewed and he was talking about what cartoons he likes. This is a 7-foot-1 man-child who looks older than everyone else in the NBA. And, he was telling people he liked Mighty Mouse and other cartoons.

I kid you not.

Teleconference time.

What the chances we find out who the QB is?

100-1.

Student Athlete coat drive

SAAC To Sponsor "Winter Wear Drive" At West Virginia Football Game On Nov. 1

STORRS, Conn. (October 16, 2008) --- The University of Connecticut Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be holding a “Winter Wear Drive” on Saturday, November 1 at the UConn vs. West Virginia football game at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

Fans are asked to bring gently used coats of all sizes and other winter gear items such as hats, scarves and gloves to the event. Student-athletes from several different teams will be volunteering their time to help collect the winter wear items.

The collected items at this year’s game will be distributed to charities across Connecticut. Those charities include the Salvation Army of Willimantic, Cornerstone Foundation in Rockville, the Windham Area Interfaith Ministry and the Manchester Area Council of Churches.

The SAAC will also sponsor a food drive on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the men’s ice hockey game vs. Yale, on Friday, Nov. 14 at the men’s basketball game vs. Western Carolina at Gampel Pavilion and on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the women’s basketball game vs. Georgia Tech at Gampel Pavilion.

Patrons are asked to bring non-perishable food items to those games to benefit the Covenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic.

Butler full-time wideout?

Count me as stunned when I read the Register story about Butler being a full-time wideout on Saturday.

Count me as skeptical that we will be seeing Butler significantly less on defense. I don't care what Butler or Edsall says. He will be on defense.

But, considering the ability of West Virginia on offense, they got to be nuts to take Darius Butler off the field. Butler is fantastic tackling the run and is a playmaker at corner.

Here is the Butler quote according to the Register:

“I always want to be out there [on defense], but this week we need to score a lot of points,” said Butler, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound senior co-captain. “Whatever Coach tells me to do, I do. I just want to go out there and help the team the best way I can, and if this week that’s by playing mostly on offense, then that’s what it will be.”

Here is a link.

What's going on here? The scoop would seem to be that Butler is going to have an increased role on Saturday.

I am not sure I see anywhere where Butler is going to have a major relaxation of duties defensively. That part makes little sense to me.

West Virginia doesn't pass the ball well, and McClain is excellent as a physical defender, but why would you take Butler off the field for any length of time? It's about athleticism.

They only have 3 corner backs. Terry Baltimore is more a special teams guru. I wouldn't doubt Butler is going to see a lot of time on Saturday on offense. But, I would be stunned if he actually wasn't out there for a majority of plays defensively.

Could they sneak him out for a rest on defense now and then?

Yes.

Randy Edsall benched Robert Vaughn last year at WVU and moved Tyvon Branch to safety to get more speed on the field. Why, a year later, would you take your best athlete off your defense.

To take away one of the top and most athletic corners in the country and play him on offense, is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Butler can do both.

I would have to see this to believe it.

In Today's JI

The Huskies are 0-4 against West Virginia. They have never been close to beating the Huskies. Today's story is the thoughts and feelings of players and Randy Edsall about that 66-21 thumping.

Scott Lutrus was brutally honest about the game.

“It’s still embarrassing,” Lutrus said Tuesday at UConn’s weekly media luncheon. “Any time a team can put 66 points on you, you don’t see that often. It happens a few times a season in college football, and we were that team. It is still embarrassing because it sticks with us. It will be there until the outcome of the game this weekend.”

UConn has been beaten by an average margin of 45-16 in four games. It hasn't mattered where this game was played. It's always been a Huskies blowout loss.

Why will things change this year?

Maybe UConn is at home and older. West Virginia isnt as powerful as last year. UConn is motivated.

Those are plausible scenarios.

It's also quite possible that West Virginia is too athletic for the Huskies. This isn't about Xs and Os and game-planning. It's about making plays. There comes a point when Xs and Os and preparation doesn't matter.

The question I want to know is -- Has that gap close where execution and preparation can make a tangible difference?

That is TBD.

Also of note: I am appearig on the NFL Network again this afternoon. It's College Football Now. Check it out around 6 p.m. I usually watch it, but not when I appear. I did shave last night however.

Tuesday presser

If you want to play 4 numbers in the daily lottery this week how about 6621?

Ouch, I know, it still hurts. That is the number of the day as the Huskies prepare for West Virginia this week.

66-21

Has UConn closed the gap from an embarrassing loss in Morgantown a year ago? That 's the question this week.

West Virginia looked light years head of the Huskies last year. Why will it be different this year.

Linebacker Scott Lutrus: "Because it's another chance."

UConn isn't running way from last year's defeat. How can you?

The question this week is how much UConn has closed the gap. They have never played West Virginia close. A win on Saturday and UConn has the inside track to the league title, and a BCS game.

Will be more late tonight or tomorrow, but here is some news and notes from the UConn-WVU Tuesday presser.

* Don't ask on the QB. Game-time decision. Zach Frazer and Cody Endres are both available (Zach has practiced). Endres hasn't heard who the starter is. He said he went out on Sunday and worked on some of those short passes where he lacked touch. Edsall wouldn't talk too much about the QB position. I am assuming its an open competition this week. When Edsall will decide? Don't know. When will we find out? Officially, Saturday. Last week the worst kept secret was that Endres was starting. But, it was all rumor and circumstantial evidence. Tough to get confirmed unless you actually go to the horses mouth.

Sometimes, I wonder why we are even here. If we can't get candor (not asking for divulging the gameplan, just some candor) on the QB situation, why even bother writing about the kicker or the role of the backup running back?

I wonder if the media just dropped off the face of the Earth if the fans or the university would miss the coverage? Hmm, are we an asset or a hassle to building the program? Would you guys miss the coverage?

What are your thoughts on this?

Those are serious questions. Not sure of the answers. Ok,off my soap box. Let's move on.

*We had a Bill Stewart teleconference and he may be the most gracious coach we have ever had on the call. He answered every question thoughtfully, and even added nuggets of his own.

As far as more passing from Pat White he had some great points. Steve Slaton, Darius Reynaud, and Owen Schmidt are gone. That's 50 percent of the offense. "No. 5 can't do it all."

He had some other thought that I will cobble together for a story later this week. He did get a little too effusive in his praise when he said they felt fortunate to share the Big East title with UConn. He then said WVU wants to "hang in and do the best it can."

A bit much.

At the end of the call we usually say goodbye to the coach and that's it. Mostguys can't hang up fast enough. Not Stewart. He thanked us for essentially letting him answer our questions on why his team isn't as good as last year.

Kid you not. So un-football coach like. Great guy. You can't fake being that genuine.

* Endres is a Pirates fan and cracked, "It's hard to be a Pirates fan." He is also a Steelers fan too. I had to ask him about the long-snapper. Endres: "How do you not have a backup long snapper?"

All right, I'll be back later with more...

Sunday wrap

Short sweet, want to finish work so I can watch Giants.

* Zach Frazer is back at practice. Edsall "not ready to make a determination" on who starts vs. West Virginia if Frazer is 100 percent.

* DT Rob Lunn shoulder injury, day-to-day, DT Brandon Dillon out today with an injury. Nate Sheer (who?) day-to-day. Everyone else came through nicely.

* Edsall liked what Cody Endres did, but they need better accuracy.

*Andre Dixon got zero carries. Nothing wrong with Andre discpline wise. He is behind other players.

That's the cliff notes version. Depending on how the Giants game goes, I may or may not be back.

Postgame Cincinnati thoughts

Sorry so late, had a family issue. Everything is fine, good news. So I am home writing this.

What struck me today was the tone of Randy Edsall's postgame press conference. He was so happy, he almost seemed down. It's an odd emotional state. Perhaps satisfaction is the best way to describe it. Very very low key.

He didn't know how today was going to end up, and he was worried about that. That the Huskies came through with a 40-16 win (though it was piled on late) left a certain amount of satisfaction. It's been a month. Good win for the Huskies, one they could have very easily lost.

Here are some of my impressions as I am sure others have touched on the notes. I am going to do some work, and get back late.

Cody Brown was an absolute monster. Two sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, twp pass deflections, a tackle for a loss and two holding penalties called on the people trying to block him. That's as dominating as you can get. NFL caliber today.

I talked to him earlier in the year and he told me the one team he wanted to beat was Cincinnati. Why? Because they talk trash at Nippert, they are physical, and UConn came out of that game with injuries all over because of the physical play (not dirty).

When reminded, Brown started to smile. He then said he "felt like dominating today." Brown laughed when he said it. Then he mentioned something about how Endres was good because his name is Cody too. Get the TV cameras off him and he is hilarious. TV cameras on? He buttons it down.

The other Brown?

When Donald Brown was told he set the single season rushing mark he said, I didn't know that, cracked a smile and laughed and then quickly thanked his offensive line. When he was asked about it 5 minutes later he brushed it off like he already knew. It was actually funny how it sounded. His initial reaction was a smile and excitement, then he went back into a "aww, it doesn't mean much." routine. Funny stuff. Brown rushed for 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Big time game. He now has 1,324 yards rushing this season, a UConn record in only eight games.

Key to the game was 0-for-14 on third down conversions. That is as good as you can get defensively. 0-for-16 on third down and fourth down conversions.

Edsall did make a mistake in the press conference. When asked about Dave Teggart he said Teggart made him look good. You know what? Teggart was so good he made the coaching staff look bad. How the heck has this kid not kicked since he has been on campus?

With the wind, Teggart said he could have kicked it from 60. It was stunning how easy and confident he was today. Teggart from 47 into the wind was a stretch, but he made it look easy.

As far as Cody Endres. Shaky at times, and not as accurate as he needs to be, but he managed a winning game. First time out against a defense like Cincinnati is as tough as it comes. UConn was stubborn throwing the ball. Patience is very important and he made enough throws. The kid has a good arm, and he has great poise. He has a little more mobility than Zach Frazer, though I think Frazer has the better arm and is a flat out better thrower. Endres has to work on his touch. Good arm, tight spiral, but he has a little too much mustard on the short throws.

Tidbits

Edsall made a decision on Endres over Frazer Tuesday. Thanks coach. Also, Zach Frazer is day-to-day. I will try and figure it out next week.

*Rob Lunn was injured with a shoulder injury in the first half and didn't return. Edsall termed it an upper extremities injury.

*Edsall went after weathermen Saturday. He kept waiting for it to rain like forecaster. "If only I could be wrong so much and still have a job." Nice of his to beat up on some other media for a change.

The best quote of the day comes from Donald Brown and sums up this game:

"I feel if we didn't win it could have turned into a long season. We got it done, now we have to focus up, have a great week of practice, and get ready for West Virginia

More great quotes from the Bearcats. I get these courtesy of JI basketball guru Phil Chardis, who was kind enough to be my gopher.

For you aspiring writers. A bit of advice. You want to know what really happened in a sporting event go to the losers' locker room. Losing is truth serum.

From Cincinnati defensive end Connor Baldwin:

"Donald Brown is better than I thought and a real good player. He is really hard to take down. I don't think the holes were that big. He is just really hard to take down."

Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly:

"UConn whipped us in the second half. It was a tale of two halves. The real thing is Donald Brown ran it when he needed too. He was the story. He was more physical and proved why he is the leading rusher in the nation."

Cincinnati Live Blogging!

First quarter

First possession: Here comes Cody Endres. Three possessions, -4 yards. Endres 1-for 3. In for a tough day.

12:09 pm: Punt blocked! Disaster. Could this game start any worse? Cincinnati takes over on the UConn 15.

12:12 pm: Great job by the UConn defense holding the Bearcats to a field goal. 3-0 Cincinnati. That's a positive. UConn can't have punt blocks.

12:20pm: This is how you lose. You are 1-10 from the 38, have a 25yard run,and are called for holding. 2nd and 20. UConn is its own worst enemy.

1:19 p.m.: UConn is right there. Need to make a play. Cincinnati ball is on UConn 40 after a 30 yard punt and 40 yard return (wind seemed to hold the ball up). UConn is throwing the ball. It's there, but UConn is just missing. Good play-calling today.

12:24 pm.: Good drive. Endres is making some good decisions. Teggart ends with 26 yard field goal 3-3. Endres has a good arm.

12:37 pm: Donald Brown 2-yard TD run. As good a run as you will see. He hurdles one defender, then freezes another defender and dives in for a touchdown spectacular. Also spectacular, Cody Brown with a pair of sacks and forced fumbles on the previous possession. 10-3 UConn. Is the worst over?

12:44 pm: Well that was quick. 5 straight passes, 27 yard TD to Gilyard on a crossing pattern 10-10. Quick passing game didn't allow pressure to get to Pike. Got to do a better job in coverage.

First Quarter wrap

Considering how it start, good first quarter for the Huskies. Endres looks comfortable and UConn is being aggressive and looking to pass. Defense great2 possessions, forget to cover on the other. Game is manageable. UConn has to provide some resistance in pass coverage. Give the rush a chance to get there.

Second quarter

1:05 p.m: UConn finally gets a break. Muffed punt leads to a recovery by Cody Brown after punting from your own endzone. At worst it changes field position.

1:34 p.m.: Penalties are killing the Huskies. Every drive its 1-20. A lot of passing now with Endres, not much results. 12-for-27 for 104 yards. He is struggling with accuracy. Not a great percentage. Defense has played great. Get this at 10-10 and regroup. Rob Lunn is injured and hasn't come back.

1:45 pm: 54 yard FG by Cincinnati's Jake Rogers with the wind. Third and 20 and they get 16yards to get a 52 yarder. I know its with the wind, but 54 is pretty steep.13-10 Cincinnati 35 seconds left.

That was a big play.

Halftime wrap

UConn throws 28 times in the first half, completes 12. It's a tough spot for the Huskies. Endres had a difficult second quarter, and the Bearcats are content to let Endres beat them. 30 times is a lot. Defense has played great. Special teams hasn't been very good. Endres is going to have to get a little more accurate to have a chance. The receivers are there if he is accurate.

Some more halftime thoughts: Game is 1 play away from breaking in Cincinnati's favor. UConn can't allow a touchdown to begin the second half. Down 20-10, and you could say goodnight. I don't think Endres has a comeback in him. Huskies defense can't break at all. That's tough to play like that, but perhaps UConn can get field position, stop committing penalties and get Donald Brown and a short passing game going. Huskies, 6 penalties for 59 yards. That's a lot. at home.

Receivers are available for Endres. He really struggled in that second quarter with his touch and accuracy.

Third quarter

update 2:10 pm: Tony Pike out, Chazz Anderson in for Cincy. Interesting. Pike was 10-of27 and didn't really do much outside of one drive. We'll see if this is permanent.

Update 2:21 pm: Defense was tremendous stopping Cincy 3-and-0ut to open the half. 1-yard TD run by Jordan Todman on the ensuing drive. 17-13 Huskies. Checkout this -- redshirt freshman Cody Endres completes a big pass to freshman Michael Smith. Freshman Todman goes in for the touchdown.

Bright future.

Update 2:30 pm: 8 play 55yard drive, field goal by Cincy. 20 MPH is making kickoffs difficult, since started at its own 40. A 10-yard defensive holding call drew Edsall's ire. Good hold by the Huskies. 17-16.

Update 2:46pm: 47-yard FG by Teggart! I thought Edsall was crazy against the wind. Kid has a bigtime leg. WOW. That was very impressive. 20-16 UConn.

2:48 pm: C.J. Marck strips ball. Aaron Bagsby recovers it on the UConn 18! Huskies go into the 4th with the wind.

Third Quarter wrap

Catching breaks. UConn is making plays, and they are moving the ball. Defense has been tremendous, and Cincinnati made a mistake. Huskies punch in a TD here to go up 11, it will be difficult. Now, UConn is 1-play away from creating some distance. Teggart FG was a revelation.

Fourth quarter

2:54 pm: Teggart 32 yard FG. How the heck was this kid not playing this year? These kicks are straight down the middle. Ohh my lord. 23-17. Bearcats still in this.

update 3:14 pm: Cody Brown caused two holding penalties.Third down pass INT by Reggie McClain. Huskies are at the Cincy 20. Huskies can put the game away here.

Update 3:18 pm: Weird turn of events. TD overturned, and third down play stopped at the goalline. Teggart 22 yard field goal, fourth of the day. 26-16. Heading down to the field final 5 minutes.

Pregame Cincinnati

What a difference a couple of weeks make. When we last left Rentschler Field the Huskies were looking at competing for a BCS berth. Now, a loss today and the Huskies got to be careful about qualifying for a bowl.

Is there any sport that is as life or death as college football? If Tony C's kick goes through the uprights then UConn is 6-1, and looking at a chance to go 3-0 in the Big East with a showdown against West Virginia next week.

But, it hits the upright and now you are holding out hope for the International Bowl.

The margin of error for UConn is so slim. Shockingly slim.

Vibe today? I don't like the feel of today.

QB talk? I will eat my hat if Zach Frazer plays.

Update 10:25 am: See Endres, Johnny McEntee and Tyler Lorenzen throwing the ball in warmups. Tyler looks like he is walking fine. Maybe it will only be a couple of more weeks, as opposed to months. Endres warming up intently.

Update 11:22 am: Zach Frazer is in uniform and pads and was working with Tony C. I am assuming he is going to be the backup holder on kicks to Desi Cullen.

Youkilis sighting: Saw Red Sox 1B/3B Kevin Youkilis on the sidelines. He had a Bearcats hat. I can't tell you how happy it was for me to see him here while the World Series is going on.

Bowl talk: Got some nice info on how the Bowl games work courtesy of Big East's assistant AD John Paquette. Notre Dame can be selected to the Gator or Sun instead of a Big East team if they are within two games of the Big East team. Meaning, a 9-3 Big East team can be bumped for a 7-5 Irish team in the Gator or Sun if need be. A 10-2 team can't be bumped from a 7-5 team, but can from an 8-4 team. Simple enough. Notre Dame has Pittsburgh next week.Root for the Panthers.

Meineke is N0. 3 on the list, and the rest of the bowl selections are kind of done by fit. There is no definitive order meaning its unlikely Cincinnati ends up in Birmingham again, or Rutgers is Toronto. It's more thought out than that.

As far as Gator/Sun, it's too early to see the way they are leaning, but the Big 12 is so strong this year that it might behoove the Gator to go Big 12 again (my analysis, not Paquette's). In the way, the Sun getsBig East or Notre Dame. That would mean next year Gator MUST take Big East or Notre Dame.

Considering the strength of the Big 12,I am assuming the Gator will go Big 12. They may be able to get Missouri, Texas Tech or Kansas. Even better if only one Big 12 team makes the BCS.

Update 11:32 am: Mr. Frazer is warming up and throwing the ball in pregame rituals. Hmm...salt for my hat?

Update 11:37 am: Endres and McEntee working with the offenses and taking snaps. No Frazer.

Keys to the Cincinnati game

1. Protect the quarterback

If it is indeed Cody Endres starting, the Huskies have to keep the Bearcats off him and at least give him a chance to run the team. UConn can’t have a quarterback under siege and expect to win. Not with the inexperienced and depth of the position right now.

2. Let’s get physical

Cincinnati beat UConn up last year at home and the Huskies learned a valuable lesson about what it takes to become an upper echelon team. UConn can’t back down from the physical play and intensity rather, must embrace it. The Huskies have to fight for every inch and not give in on the offensive and defensive lines. That is where the game will be won.

3. Win the field position battle

UConn’s loss to Rutgers last week can be summed up above all things – field position. Cincinnati has one of the best punters in the game in Kevin Huber. UConn has struggled in special teams in its two losses with blocked punts and poor decision making in the kick return game as well as some coverage problems. That is a problem if you have a small margin of error, which the Huskies do. It’s even more magnified when you have inexperience at quarterback. Huskies have to win the field position battle.

Frazer game time decision -- Edsall speaks on Cuse

Info tough to come by this Thursday.

Zach Frazer is a gametime decision on Saturday. Every question on Frazer and the QB play was answered with "Zach Frazer is a gametime decision," coach Randy Edsall.

Edsall wouldn't say much more than that.

What we didn't get an answer on whether Zach was medically cleared to practice and how much he has practiced. No answer on the question. Edsall wouldn't say how much Cody Endres has played with the No. 1s, and if Frazer is cleared to play, if he in fact will do so assuming he has had a shortened week of preparation.

It's worth noting that Zach has been in the film study and going to class which would indicate a less severe concussion, oops, "head injury."

Edsall doesn't lie, I can tell you that. He plays with degrees of the truth and is vague to create confusion and is rarely candid -- but he doesn't tell flat out lies. If Frazer is a gametime decision, then I honestly believe there is still a chance Frazer could play.

My gut? This is what blog is for right? If I had a gun to my head --- Cody Endres.

Edsall is a creature of preparation, if Frazer hasn't prepared, even if he is cleared to play, Edsall will go with Endres. So, all signs point to Endres, but it's frustratingly murky for reporters.

Also, a New York Times story today linked Edsall to Syracuse and says he has been contacted about the opening (wait, soon to be opening in the worst kept secret in the country) up at his alma mater.

Edsall was angry about this one:

"I don’t deal in speculation. I want you and everyone to know that I haven’t been in contact by any college, university, NFL or people about any job. End of story.”

Lastly, DT Brandon Dillon is out, and RB Nate Sheer is also out. Sheer is a third string long snapper.

Tuesday presser -- avalanche of info

Information overload on Tuesday at UConn. Where do we start, not enough space to put in the paper, though I am going to try(I get to run the paper for tomorrow anyway. Hmm ,like being writer and editor.).

First news is that the QB position is still unknown.

Zach Frazer is recovering from a "head injury" and the staff is not classifying it as a concussion using a more broad term to describe the injury. Yes, a concussion is a head injury. But until a I hear it from the horses mouth (the doctor), Zach, or UConn, I can't classify it as a concussion.

He is still questionable for Saturday. Cody Endres is the backup. I get the sense that this is truthful. UConn is going to evaluate Frazer today and on Wednesday and Thursday to see if he can go.

If there was a starter today for UConn? Probably Endres. UConn is going to see how Frazer progresses. He is going to class, so he is alert enough to actually do school-work.

I should address the unavailability of Frazer and Endres to the media. Edsall said that Frazer has class on Tuesday and it's impossible for him to make the Tuesday interviews without a major effort. Other arrangements will be made as requested however, and as long as the requests are taken seriously, I don't think access will be an issue. At least I am willing to work a little harder and head up to Storrs on Wednesday if necessary (actually, it would work out better.Prefer to space interviews out). As far as Endres, Edsall is pulling the Frazer thing from pre-Carolina because he may start. Kind of silly if you ask me, but, to each his own.

More will be known Thursday. I think that is an honest assessment of the situation.

Third or second string is mystery man Johnny McEntee, walk-on from California. No D.J. Hernandez back to QB -- not going to happen. In perhaps the funniest exchanges at the lunch was Edsall answering questions about Johnny. At one point Edsall had to remind that McEntee is the third-string right now. A little too much McEntee questioning (I asked the final one of course). Casey Turner is not in the equation. McEntee is no Matt Vollono however. He is a preferred walk-on and has some ability.

Dave Teggart will start as kicker for the Huskies over Tony C. Tony C is a standup guy, and took questions before he had to dodge for class. Tony C. class act, was on Saturday after missing three kicks, and was on Tuesday. Tony C. is taking it all right however. Got to speak to Teggart today.

He comes in to the cafeteria and is mobbed by 15 media members. He couldn't believe it but held up well. He was a soccer player when he was young, and his father got him into kicking (pops kicked at New Hampshire). Big strong legs for Teggart, he has very thick legs. Feels comfortable under 55 yards. Kicked 48 yarders in high school.

Edsall addressed two controversial calls on Saturday. He sent in the film on the Martin Bedard pass interference call and the Donald Brown safety. The Brown safety was the decisive play in the game and on further review he was never down in the endzone.

That's a serious error on the officials part in my opinion. Edsall didn't have a good look of a play on the ground, and the Huskies don't have the benefit of replay in the booth like they do in the NFL. So, the coach may challenge the play blindly, or the replay booth can call the play. How that play didn't meet the standard of review is beyond me. Clearly, Brown didn't touch the ground in the endzone. Edsall didn't find this out definitively until he watched film.

Too late.

There is a lot more, but I have work to do. When I get a chance,I will empty the notebook.

Whack the Poinsetta off the list

There has been several scenarios that a Big East team could have headed to the Poinsetta Bowl in San Diego if a Pac 10 team didn't qualify for the game (likely, No. 7 in Pac 10 won't be over .500)).

If the Big East loses the Gator Bowl to Notre Dame, that leaves a dearth of bowl games to go around with the BCS, Meineke, Papajohns, Toronto and the New Tampa Bowl. That's five games for what could be 6 teams qualifying (I am assuming Rutgers and Cincinnati are out).

So, the thought was to match a MWC team with a Big East team by default. That is off the table. The Poinsetta Bowl signed a deal with the WAC that was announced today that is in effect for 2008 and 2009. If a Pac 10 team is not eligible for that game, a WAC team will get the bid next.

This sets up a possible 6-6 WAC team getting in over say a 7-5 Big East team. If this deal wasn't signed, then the Poinsetta Bowl would have to take the 7-5 team.

UConn-West Virginia Football Game To Kickoff At Noon On November 1; Televised By BIG EAST Network

STORRS, Conn. (October 20, 2008) -- The University of Connecticut vs. West Virginia football game on Saturday, November 1 will kickoff at 12:00 p.m. and be televised by the BIG EAST Network by ESPN Regional Television. The game from Rentschler Field will be seen live in Connecticut on MyTV9-WCTX. The game will also be seen live on SportsNet New York (SNY) from New York City in addition to a number of other affiliates.

One loss and even the U doesn't want UConn? Hey, that's a good thing.

Ich bin ein Tampa Bay Rays

We are all Tampa Bay Rays.

Ok, it's not John Kennedy at the Brandenburg Gates, but the moment is not lost.

I must admit, I was nervous watching the Rays-Sox. It wasn't schendenfreude (My German is on fire!) either.

I like the Rays, it's kind of like watching the future New York Yankees play. They passed the first test, they beat the Red Sox.

Now for some schendenfreude : I wanted the Red Sox fan to be miserable, thus giving me joy. A perfectly natural state of existence for Yankee fans these days.

Misery loves company. Now, we can laugh at Red Sox fans for losing to the Rays (how do you lose to the Rays?) while ignoring the fact that they beat us (yes, US) so bad we didn't even make the postseason.

Only a true Yankee fan can thread the needles. Only a Yankee fan can make the Red Sox fan feel worse for having been in the playoff instead of going home in early October. It's going to work, if you are an angry Red Sox fan reading this, it already has. All Yankee fans need to go up to their employees and (Yankee fans are the bosses, Sox are the workers) and needle their minions.

It's good for baseball that the Hatfield and McCoys have to sit out the Fall Classic for a change.

In Monday's JI

Not on the conference call, will check the re-broadcast later.

Here is today's column on UConn play calling. Huskies have to have more confidence in the passing game.

Update on Frazer.

I have nothing confirmed on Frazer's status. He did get hit pretty good, but he was feeling much better on Sunday.

Frazer still fuzzy

Nothing official on Zach Frazer, he is feeling better today. No official word on if it is another concussion. Edsall said Frazer was fuzzy. He didn't ask what that means.

Fuzzy? I think it means cloudy, detached, mental state. It's not a great description , but I think it conveys the point. He got dinged up. How serious is TBD.

We will find out more Tuesday.

Randy Edsall addressed somewhat the play-calling. He hates this subject (me too). Once he hears play-calling Edsall goes into a shell (Questioning play-calling to a football coach is like telling a writer that he can't write a lick. It's a conversation stopper.)

Edsall feels that his team was moving the ball fine in the first half, and it was field position in the second half that really limited them. I'll be fair, valid points and he is probably right on the field position view. They did have a chance to win the game. The game plan was successful in this regard.

Question, does that validate the play-calling philosophy?

He did mention there was some openings down field in the first half that weren't read properly (Frazer), and intimated that the receivers aren't getting enough separation (they aren't).

The question I want answered is a tough one that for most of the season has been ducked because of the combative nature of questioning play-calling.

Is it play-calling or lack of ability at receiver and quarterback that is causing this?

There is a dearth of big plays in the passing game. There has to be a reason for it.

Other tidbits:

Edsall said Cody Brown was terrific on Saturday. I think Brown was better than that. He played a big-time game. It's too bad UConn lost. Cody Brown had a great game on Saturday and it was lost in the midst.

Management vs. talent

For the entire three hour ride home from Rutgers last night I actually thought about UConn's playcalling on offense, the 12-10 loss, and the role that playcalling and performance dealt with the loss.

Does the fact that UConn missed three field goals and had horrible field position because of the return game invalidate what was an incredible conservative package of plays?

Does the fact that field position, starting inside your five three times, limit what you can do?

These points all have to be taken into account. Instead of shooting off an opinion I came back home, took a look at the live game blog for an unfiltered view of how I thought the game was going, and started to take the entire weeks planning in mind.

In UConn coach Randy Edsall's mind, if UConn executed and didn't make bad plays, and Tony C hit the field goals, UConn wins this game. He is right on that account. Kenny Britt did some damage in the passing game (he is a good player), but I don't think UConn struggled to stop Rutgers on offense.

In a micro sense Edsall is right. UConn lost the game because Tony C missed three field goals, Robbie Frey panicked at the 1 yard line, and Jasper Howard couldn't make a correct decision whether to field a punt or let it go. So, in that sense, if UConn doesn't make those mistakes they win.

One word kept creeping into my mind however -- management. When asked Thursday how they wanted Zach Frazer to play all they wanted Frazer to do was "manage the game." After a three interception week, UConn wanted Frazer to execute the offense in low risk situations where his inexperience wouldn't hurt UConn.

In that sense, Frazer gets an A+ on Saturday.

Through three quarters Frazer was 6-for-8 for 67 yards passing. He did exactly what he was asked to do. Not make mistakes. Look at the throws. Several bubble passes to the outside for short gains. These are called plays, not reads. The goal is a low risk pass and perhaps to get 7-8 yards off it.

He wasn't asked to win the game, just asked to not lose it.

UConn,Edsall and Ambrose, are trying to manage the game. The offense's goal is to move the chains and not put the game at risk by turning it over. How many of Frazer's throws were to the outside on the sidelines, or short to the backs? UConn was not going to put Frazer in a position to throw an interception. UConn never looked down the field.

It was too big a risk. It's wasn't until UConn was down 12-3 that the urgency of the game dictated UConn pass the ball.

That's the problem. Edsall bristles whenever playcalling comes up and he assumes that the media and the fans are expecting the team to chew up yards like Oklahoma. That's certainly not the case.

It's not about trick plays, or throwing it deep,or putting up big numbers. You can be bland, and still effective. This observation is not about being flashy. No one is expecting the Huskies to go to the spread offense. UConn doesn't have the personnel.

It is about being aggressive and setting a tone. I think UConn set and awful tone with the offense on Saturday. Three passes in the first quarter, five passes at the half? Way too cautious.

Ambrose didn't call a bad game. I am sure he thought the plays would work and it came down to execution. The problem is in every instance they went with the lowest risk play. It was a conservative game calling, to the point of being risk averse.

Where is the confidence in the wide receivers and quarterback? I think Frazer can throw the ball,if I didn't, I wouldn't be writing this. At some point, it's about letting your talent go and having confidence in them.

Managing the game gets you far. Edsall has made it an art form the last two years. Without a doubt he is the best preparation and game coach in the Big East. I don't think it's close.

But, is he getting too risk averse?

As long as UConn was in the game, the coaching staff wasn't going to take any risk at losing the game with a devastating interception,or even an incompletion to get off schedule. That seems a very conservative offensive philosophy. UConn managed that game to get into the fourth quarter and pull it out. Maybe with a backup QB, that's the smart conservative play. I will cede that point.

And, Edsall is right. If they made the plays they should have UConn wins.

What does that do in the macro sense however?

Every game UConn plays doesn't exist in a vacuum. UConn has three receiving touchdowns in seven games. It's not 12 one game seasons. You have to build on past games. The passing offense has zero confidence in itself.

UConn needs a more confident attitude. They need to be confident in the passing game. How about coming out and setting an aggressive tone?Move the chains, get some tempo with the offense.

On most plays in the first three quarters UConn went a low risk play. Always cautious. Even the end around to Darius Butler in the redzone was a low risk play (what's the worst that can happen on the play?). Never did the ball go forward into the endzone. Not a single try.

A little bit of risk never hurts. You don't want to get crazy, and you don't want to get away with what is your bread and butter. But, part of managing a game is to know when to take on risk. You can't win by eliminating risk unless you have superior talent.

UConn can manage the game beautifully. Being a conservative, bland and vanilla offense is fine. It's worked so far.

Being risk adverse, however, leaves you scratching your head at the end of the game after your kicker hits the upright in the final minute.

Postgame Rutgers --Update Frazer "fuzzy"

Real brief before I write for our website. QB Zach Frazer is getting looked at by doctors. He wasn't available for interviews, but he did get up slow from a hit late in the game.

UConn didn't release what was getting checked out.

As far as mood of team?

Randy Edsall blamed the kicker and special teams.

"We made plays today that weren't very good, and we had a kicker who had a bad day," Edsall said.

Tony C was stand up

"It was a bad day,I take full responsibility,"Ciaravino said. "When I hit it,I thought it was good.Seeing it hit the post,it was upsetting."

D.Brown in second half rushing,13 carries for seven yards.

I asked Edsall about being conservative with the playcalling. He didn't think it was an important issue. I'll transcribe his thoughts later. I am going to write, drive home, and let the thoughts sink in.

Frazer Update: Before I head home. Frazer was a bit "fuzzy" after the game and was being reevaluated by UConn doctors. More will be known tomorrow during Randy Edsall's conference call. Frazer took a good shot and got up slow late in the game. He had a concussion earlier this year suffered during fall camp. Cody Endres is next in line.

Be on late, or early in the morning. Heading up 287 in 15 minutes.

Live Blogging Rutgers

Kickoff: Sunny 57 degrees, sunny. Great football weather. No Kevin Brock at tight end.

Update 12:12p.m.: WOW. Cody Brown sack, a tackle for a loss on the drive, and then Cody Brown blocks a punt (UConn can do it too). UConn takes over on the 50.

Update 12:17p.m.:Didn't love the third down play at the Rutgers 2. Lots of motion and then a Brown -1 rush to the left. That's a passing down on third and goal from the 4. Rutgers was waiting for the run. Tony C field goal...3-0 Huskies.

Update 12:31 p.m.: Rutgers goes to the 1 and is topped. Greg Lloyd puts a youtube hit on Kordell Young to stop him for no gain at the UConn 1 on third down. 3-3 game.

First wrap: Rutgers made a couple of big third down throws. Brown has 44 yards on five carries. UConn specials has resulted in two drives that start at around the 50-50. 3-3, game hasn't settled in yet. BTW, this game is taking forever. The breaks are 5 minutes long.

Update 12:42: Tony C missed 42 yard field goal.Ugly kick, but it was low percentage anyway. Too much wind. In no man's land there. I don't think they will be kicking there again into the wind. No wide receivers can get open.

Update 1:13 p.m.: UConn may want to consider a little more aggressive offense in the red zone. Tony C just hit a25-yard FG off the bar. That has to be a give me. At first and goal from the 9, UConn didn't get one pass into the endzone. UConn has 18 rushes and five passes. The 25 yard miss is inexcusable.

Halftime wrap: Absolute snoozefest. 3-3 at the half. UConn is 1-for-3 on field goals and is 5 passes for 33 yards in the first half. Brown is doing a nice job running with 14 carries for 100 yards, but this is as conservative a throwing as I have seen. No risk, pass if you must. It's not a bad gameplan, but if you aren't going to make field goals then you have to be a little more trusting of your QB. Frazer is making good decisions. He has not thrown it a couple of times and taken a loss or a short gain on a scramble. Some quibbles comes with redzone play calling -- take one shot at the endzone... pretty please. Outside of WRs getting swing passes(that are being counted as runs), they don't seem to be able to get open. Frazer is going through his progressions and hasn't made a mistake.

I am not saying the play-calling is bad, it isn't, UConn is moving the ball and hasn't made any mistakes. But, most of it is low risk play-calling. These plays are 5 yard plays that maybe get broken for bigger gains, that's what the philosophy is. Don't hurt yourself, ride Brown, and hope the defense holds.

It's 3-3, should be more than that, could be worse. But, if you are going to play the way UConn does, which is fine, you have to make field goals.

Third quarter

Update1:46 pm: Robbie Frey awful play to start half on kickoffs. UConn begins at the half yard line and runs three plays for 2 yards.34 yard punt by Cullen, Rutgers takes over at the UConn 34. Here we go.

Update1:49 pm: Third and 9, Teel completes a 16-yard pass. Then a Young 6-yard TD run. 10-3 Rutgers. UConn zone is too soft,no pass rush. UConn deserves to be down 10-3 after a disastrous opening of the half. On a kickoff you start at your own half yard line?

Update 1:59p.m.: 27 yard pass play to the fullback!

Update 2 p.m.: After the play, first down run(shocking)-5. Second down boot scramble for+2, and a 3rd and12 pass for 3 yards to Andre Dixon. All low risk.

Update 2:07 p.m.: I don't get Rutgers. UConn can't cover the passing game (playing too soft) and Rutgers tries and run the ball. Rutgers keeping UConn in the game.

Update 2:12 pm: I don't get UConn. First down pass for-1 (another conservative pass that is predicated on the WR making a play), and then two Brown runs from the goal line. How are you supposed to win?

Update2:16p.m: UConn again downed inside the5 yard line. What is Howard doing? Three drives this half started inside the 5 yard line. Oops, game over,Brown safety on a run. What a terrible job of playcalling. 12-3 Rutgers.

Update 2:20 p.m.: UConn 8 passes thrown in three quarters. except for the fullback, passes are 3 catches for 11 yards rest of the team. UConn playcalling,31 rushes,8 passes. You can't win if you are afraid to throw the ball.

Fourth quarter

Update 2:38 pm: At some point UConn has to make a play. Butler dropped an interception. ON third down there was a 22 yard gain (It's amazing that other teams can pass the ball).

Update 2:41 pm: Cody Brown having a nice game.Set the scene.1st and 10 on the UConn 15,11 minutes left. Here is the game,UConn needs a scoring drive here.

Update 2:48p.m.: Breaking news,UConn connects on 47 yard TD pass to Kashif Moore. First 30-yard plus pass play of the year. Rutgers 12-10. Developing...

They actually attempted to pass the ball this drive. Seriously folks, UConn looked to pass the ball and look what happened.

Update3:02 p.m. Pass interference on Bedard negates first down. Could have cost UConn the game. Didn't see the penalty. UConn 4th and 12 on the UConn 25. 42 yard field goal. You have to kick it, but, it's a difficult kick into the wind.

Update 3:05 p.m.: Hit right upright. You got to be kidding me. Ciaravino hits right and left upright today. 1-4 on FGs today. Devastating loss for the Huskies.

Update 3:08: That's it. Awful loss for the Huskies. Special teams and staid play calling did it to UConn today.

Rutgers pregame

Pregame: It's a beautiful fall day in picturesque Piscataway. Nice cold chill. I hate this ride. I just can't stand driving through New Jersey. Sorry people. It's just a bunch of strip malls, traffic lights and no left turns.

Here is a preview of today's game. I can't believe it's light out and the Huskies are playing. That's what happens when you lose. I have a good feeling about today. Reading the Rutgers area papers and other research I think the Scarlet Knights are still searching. Perhaps homecoming fires the Scarlet Knights up. This is the season for Rutgers here. If that doesn't fire them up, nothing will.
I expect a close game, but as long as Frazer doesn't throw INTs I think the Huskies will be fine today-- 17-14.

Update 11:33 a.m.: Watching Huskies warm-up I see Andre Dixon in there going out in pass catching situations. Question: Where has the Dixon screen pass gone? It is halfway through the season and UConn has tried maybe once or twice. Why not got to some two back sets?

Considering the struggle at wide receiver, I think they should put Dixon in the slot. You know what? Just get the man the ball.

An incredible stat in the UConn notes. D.J.Hernandez's 100 yard game receiving against North Carolina two weeks ago was the first 100 yard receiving game by the Huskies since the MOTOR CITY BOWL (Keron Henry).

That is a span of 41 GAMES if UConn's stats are true. I can't remember a game that it wasn't since I have been covering the team.

I find this incredible. UConn is even in more desperate a need at WR than even I thought (and I have harped endlessly about this).

Update11:55 a.m.: Half full. Where is everyone? Seriously, about 60 percent. Lots of empty seats, entire rows unoccupied.

Thursday update

Randy Edsall Thursday call and it's good news -- no new injuries.

The DTs should all be back healthy and Edsall said there was nothing new to add. That's a good sign going down to Rutgers.

That's the breaking news on the call but there are some other interesting tidbits Edsall said.

Look for Donald Brown to be a work horse again, and the staggering amount of carries he is getting doesn't look like it will stop.I know many are clamoring for Dreads, but while he may get some carries they would be foolish to go away from Brown for an extended period of time.

Edsall on Brown's workload:

"I guess the thing about it, is in a perfect world you would like to (limit to 25 carries). We had 90 plays in the North Carolina game. It depends on how many plays. The best thing I can say,it doesn't seem to affect him those carries. Ideally 25, but if it takes 39 and he is strong an doing good we will take 30."

The Huskies are 5-1 and with another win are bowl eligible. I think 7 wins is the mark to celebrate honestly, but this year it looks like a 6 win Big East team is likely to take a bowl slot. Not so in other years (notably Pitt two years ago).

That being said, how huge is this game against Rutgers? If the Huskies win, they go 2-1 on a season-defining 3-game road trip and are 2-0 in conference with 3 home games and two big east road games left.

This win could set the Huskies up for a big run. A win here will put the Huskies in a strong position to challenge for the Big East title and a BCS berth. After this game, South Florida is the only game that looks like a big stretch at winning. UConn has never beaten Cincinnati or West Virginia, but unlike last year, these games are at Rentschler Field.

I'll always take my chances at home.

This game could be the difference between the Gator Bowl and the International Bowl. It's along way to go and you can't win the Big East or secure a big bowl game with a win Saturday, but you can certainly lose one on Saturday.

That's what makes college football incredibly compelling during the season.

Last thought, UConn has now become the favorites and is -1.5 by Vegas. That takes a lot of money coming on the Huskies since Monday to push the line from +2.5. That's a major line move.

Leaked debate footage

I think the Batman did what he had to do and the race hasn't changed fundamentally. The Penguin made a major mistake attacking the character of The Batman. Just because the guy has a mask on and works at night doesn't mean he is a closet criminal.

This is going to drive the Penguins negatives up real high.

Tuesday presser -- back in the saddle

Don't have much time here, here is a quick update on happenings at media day. Will have a more involved post late.

Good news with injuries: All the defensive tackles should be healthy to play with Rob Lunn, Alex Polito and Kendall Reyes recovering from ankle injuries.

On the down side, tight end Yianni Aposyolakos is out for 2 months with a hip injury. John Delahunt moves into the backup slot now. The Huskies used tackle Dan Ryan at tight end, I am not sure how much he will be in that role on Saturday at Rutgers. Delahunt has yet to play this season. The team sorely misses Steve Brouse.

Donald Brown is jacked for the Jersey game. All the Jersey kids are. Brown said everyone always makes fun of New Jersey, that's why all Jerseyites have a chip in their shoulders.

That's it for news. I will be back after I pay the bills...

In Yesterday's JI

I of course forgot to post yesterday's UConn football story. It's on Coach Lorenzen.

Kind of weird with no football game this week. Better get used to it, Huskies have three bye weeks with only six games left.

Class of 2018

Huskies got to make a home visit on this kid. He is like the Ray Lewis of pee wee football. Incredible closing speed.

I wouldn't want to see this kid in the sandbox. I may give him my lunch money now. BTW, what is this world coming to?

Wednesday off week

What a refreshing change today. Just the usual beat writers were up on campus and we were actually able to spend time with some of the players, not the usual 5-10 minute gang interviews. I talked with Rob Lunn, Zach Frazer, Donnie Brown and Tyler Lorenzen about 20 minutes each way. You can get conversational, and that leads to greater insights. I wasn't just looking for a quote.

You actually get a chance for open ended questions which lead you down paths you never thought about.

It's nice to get outside the fish bowl. During normal weeks there is such a crush and a rush. Not any ones fault (I think the Tuesday's have gone smoothly), but a different atmosphere this week.

Hopefully, the stories that come out of it are better. I think they will be.

As far as topics, there really isn't much breaking news at this point. Lorenzen hopes to return against South Florida at the earliest, and the bowl game the latest. Of course there is a chance we have seen Tyler in his last game. That would be a shame. I am not sure how they would work him back in (depends on how Frazer plays), but I imagine if he is able to go Randy Edsall will find a way to use him. He deserves that chance.

Lorenzen knew it right away when he broke his foot (he had a growth plate fracture in his left foot in high school) and he asked the trainer right away how long he would be out. That left a difficult position for Tyler to be in.

He had to cheer lead, but also come to grips with the injury.

"It was bittersweet," Lorenzen said. "I was happy for the team, but I was down because of the injury."

What is Lorenzen's role now?

"I can bring some leadership, be upbeat as possible," he said.

Frazer did almost an hour of interviews. He answered everything that was throw at him. On why he left Notre Dame? "I wasn't happy in regards to the football program."'

He had a close relationship with QB coach Peter Vaas (now an assistant coach at Duke) who left abruptly before spring practice. There were other things.

Frazer watched the tape of the UNC game and he said he was to blame for the loss. I think that is a bit much, one of the interceptions was Kashif Moore's fault and the interception return for a touchdown was at 24-6. Game was over already.

UConn lost this game because of penalties and punt blocking. Frazer is a nice humble person. I found him down to earth and personable. Not shy, he was mature and had command and didn't fluster.

I asked an awkwardly phrased question about him being the last of his Elite 11 campmates (Tim Tebow was at the camp among others) to throw a college pass.

He immediately interjected, "Well that's all right."

He then made a case that most QBs sit for 2 years at least before playing. Command of the facts and composure. He could have handled 10 minutes the week before (we never give up).

Let's talk about a Fat White Guy.

Lunn's blog has taken off bigtime. He destroys this site in blog hits. Part of it is the angle, he can provide what no one else provides, and that its a football player is even more remarkable.

It's also such a different perspective, absolutely captivating at times. The kid (I am only 7 years older than him) is a talented writer. Don't know if he can(actually, wants) to do the nuts and bolts journalistic work, but he has the makings of a columnist.

Superior whit and talent, it's kind of like taking a guy with a 4.35 40 and molding him into a player. Lunn is rough around the edges (focus, style and he has to prove he is versatile) but that that ability is too good to pass up. He can be a star writing if he wants to be, and of course catches a couple of breaks. He already has a niche though and that's important.

I hope this doesn't offend him, but he is a better writer than he is a football player.

On an aside, Lunn went to the Daily Campus as a freshman and asked to write, but because he was an athlete they kind of brushed him off. I can't tell you how poor a decision that was. He wasn't a journalism major, so he gets turned down?

I am mortified as an alum. Whatever happened to openness?

And, no wonder my business is in the tank. No vision, can't think out of the box. Even in college.

Gotta pay the bills.

Later...

Post game North Carolina --

UConn was humbled tonight. 38-12 on national TV. It's a difficult loss for a proud program.

I can't put my finger on why. Frazer was good and bad, but I don't think he won or lost this game with his mistakes, though the first INT was a killer. The game was over by the time for the third INT that was returned for a TD.

First off, the punting was inexplicable. Three times it is blocked? Are you kidding me? Randy Edsall said it was technique (of course it always is), and Cullen said there were mental breakdowns. It was stunning the incompetence in that regard. Desi did say he was taking a little longer than usual because he was angling it to keep away from Brandon Tate.

The penalties were also disturbing. 11 penalties for 97 yards. Too much. It is uncharacteristic of this team.

Defensively, UConn did a decent job on the UNC offense, but the circumstances were so difficult. They handed UNC 21 points. Can't win doing that.

What's amazing is that UConn ran 89 plays, to UNC's 49. UConn had a yardage advantage and a 10 minute TOP advantage. So what?

The Huskies were desperate to make one play on offense, and really couldn't do it. The wide receiver corps needs to improve. Frazer will get the ball down there if they get open. He got the ball to D.J. nicely today for 103 yards.

It's a disheartening loss for the Huskies. This was a good measuring stick, and they came up short.

Brown's 161 yards were nice, but he was in no mood after the game.

"I am (angry). I hate losing,"Brown said.

They have to go back to the drawing board. There were some many negative plays that UConn never gave itself a chance at pulling off the upset. UNC is bigger and pushed UConn around, but they were right in it in the third quarter. They just lacked some playmakers on offense and defense. Someone had to do something, UConn never got any momentum, and that was too much to overcome.

I don't think UNC dominated. That's what made this all the more disappointing. UNC just let UConn self-destruct.

Going to check out now. Talk to you guys tomorrow.

Pregame: This place is a sea of Carolina Blue. First time on campus, absolutely tremendous. Nothing beats an on campus stadium. This one is beautiful. Virginia was nice, this may even be better.

News, Kendall Reyes isn't on the trip. That was the big secret this week,I guess. Hope Butch Davis didn't game plan much to stop him. This place is going to be loud.

Update 7:08: Huskies win toss, and DEFER! Tremendous opening down here for the Tar Heels. The pregame pageantry of college football is awesome. Wish I was in the stands. The place is clad in light Carolina blue.

Update 7:12 pm: Twyon Martin starting at DT. Don't know if Polito is here.Kendall Reyes isn't here.

Update 7:15: Little bit of Wildcat there. Brown direct snap. Interesting.

Update 7:34 pm: Tony C 23 yard field goal. UConn goes 14plays 63 yards. Frazer looks comfortable.Brown is a horse. Good opening drive. 3-0 UConn.

Update 7:31 pm: Good hold there the Huskies. Butler made an NFL play stopping a run for a loss on first and goal from the 10. Cody Brown sacks Cameron Sexton on third down. Ball was fumbled, but UNC recovered. 31 yard FG for UNC 3-3. I like the feel so far and the vibe I get from the Huskies.

Update 7:40 pm: Bad throw by Frazer on INT. Never saw the LB. UNC takes over at the15 of UConn. Got to hold here. Frazer stared down D.J Hernandez on the slant.

Update 7:43 pm: TD UNC, 1 yard run by Ryan Houston. 10-3 Carolina. Turnovers, turnover, turnovers. 10-3. UConn can't panic here. Just relax. Still like the vibe. Almost had a fumble at the UConn 1. But, for second time this game a fumble was on the ground but UNC recovered it.

First quarter wrap

Difference is simply the Frazer INT. UNC intercepted pass, and two potential fumbles by UNC weren't recovered by UConn. 10-3 because of the turnover. UConn looks comfortable however. No more mistakes however. Brown carrying the load. Frazer looks poised. He can't stare down his receivers however. Brown, 40 first quarter yards. Frazer 5-8 28 yards, 1 INT.

Update 8 pm: Uh oh. third straight possession with no first down and then a blocked punt. UNC has ball at the UConn 19.What's up with the punt blocking? UConn is now on the ropes.Has to hold to a field goal here or they are in trouble. Offense can't get a first down.

Update 8:04: Jasper Howard a great int? UConn on the brink, Cody Brown brings pressure and Sexton throws an INT. Get one or two first downs here and then your fine.

Update 8:14pm: Embarrassing special teams performance by UConn. Another block punt this time for a TD. 17-3. That's going to be the ball game folks. On three punts, Cullen has had two of them blocked and one tipped. It's as bad a special teams as you have ever seen.UConn its own self destructive force. Penatlies, turnovers, and punt protection are why UConn is down. The minus plays are staggering.

Update 8:34pm: At UNC 9 yardline and Kashif Moore has the ball tips off his hands. Bad play by Kashif. Ball should have been caught. 17-3 at the half. Horrible first half for the Huskies.

Halftime wrap

UConn is its own worst enemy tonight. Officially, three punts are blocked, two resulted in essentially turnovers(first one was tipped and went 47 yards). The TD on the punt block is a back breaker. Penalties are killing the Huskies. 17-3, both touchdowns are off a punt block, and off a drive that started at the UConn 15. But, even the Frazer INT (Moore's fault) at the end of the half illustrates how frustrating this is for UConn. Frustrating first half. UNC is right there. These teams are even.

Can't win anywhere with that type of negative plays. I will say, I don't think the game is over as I stated above. UConn just has no margin of error anymore. Two INTs, penalties galore, dropped passes, didn't grab two fumbles on the ground and THREE blocked punts (really 2, but how come this is a problem?). How is this only 17-3?

Some stats, Frazer 12-of-22 100 yards. I think expect for maybe 2 3 throws, he has looked good. It's on the receivers to run good patterns, and to catch it. You can' have a ball tip off your hands. Brown, if you take away some holding calls, would be over 100 again already. Very poor job by UConn in the first half.

UConn outgaining UNC 169-107. Again. What does yardage actually mean again?

Third quarter

Update 9:05: Frazer with several nice throws on the opening drive. Looks comfortable.Don't like running the ball on 3rd and 9. It was a pitch to Brown, meant to be misdirection. That's a lot of yards to get. Got to pass it. Still,Tony C short field goal 17-6.

Update 9:12pm: Delay as one of the lights went out. They can play in this. Don't know why they aren't. Uh ohh, second one went out. What's the procedures now?

Update 9:18 pm: No idea what's going on or how long it will take. Crowd is doing the wave. One bulb on top of the tower. 20 minute delay as the lights warmup. Way to ruin the game. Don't understand why they can't play.

Update 9:23 pm: Game was just ruined. Flow is important, UConn stopped UConn first down. Now what? Kung Fu fighting is playing in the press box. This is surreal. I am looking for the dancing girls. Should go get some food. Why isn't the UNC band playing anything? They are a band aren't they? Presumably, they know some songs. Maybe I just complain too much.

Game should start at9:33.

Update 9:39: 39 yard TD run by UNC's Draughn. 24-6 UNC. That's the ball game folks barring a miracle. The special team have been horrible. Cullen shanked a punt and UNC got the ball at their own 43. Don't know Draughn went untouched. Bad play.

Update 10:04. UConn own worstenemy. Blow out city with Frazer not taking a sack that resulted in a 22-yard INT return as he tried to just get rid of the ball. What you going to do? Disappointing performance. 38-6 right now. A humbling experience.

Fourth quarter

Update 10:08: That's going to be it for live blogging. Will be back later after the game. Very disappointing performance. Frazer's performance wasn't bad, and he will improve.

Donald Brown just went over 1,000 yards, that's a bright spot.

Keys to the North Carolina game

Tempted to head to Raleigh for the NC State-Boston College game (O'Brien Bowl). Remember Live Blogging the game tonight.

Today's JI advance.

Keys to the game

1. Get Zach Frazer off

Get Zach Frazer comfortable throwing the ball. If Frazer can be an asset in the passing game and is comfortable, that will make things much easier for Donald Brown and the offense.

2. Limit North Carolina wide receivers

The Huskies can’t let Brandon Tate and Hakeem Nixon and run wild at wide receiver. The primary defense is corners Darius Butler and Jasper Howard. The most important part of the defense is getting a passed rush.

3. Control Brandon Tate on kicks

Tate on kickoffs is explosive. He is averaging 25 yards per punt return, an unheard of amount. He is such an explosive returner the Huskies have to limit his touches.

Offense

UConn turns over the reins of the offense to Zach Frazer at quarterback and now could be the time to unleash the passing game. Frazer is a pure thrower for the Huskies and he has a stronger arm and throws a better ball than Tyler Lorenzen. Frazer has to limit mistakes and pass just enough to soften things up for Donald Brown. If Brown has another big game, and no one has stopped him yet, that makes Frazer’s job much easier. The nations leading rusher vs. a defense that is giving up 138 yards a game is good for the Huskies.

The Tar Heels are an explosive offensive team even with quarterback Tyler Yates out in place of Cameron Sexton and Mike Paulus rotating. The key for the Tar Heels is at wide receiver where Brandon Tate and Hakeem Nixon are perhaps two of the best wide receivers UConn will face. Tate is averaging 25.9 yards a reception and has three touchdowns and 359 yards receiving in four games games. Nixon is almost as explosive, with 357 yards and three touchdowns. Sexton was tremendous against Miami coming in for Paulus, who struggled early.

Defense

The onus of stopping UNC’s high powered offense will fall on cornerbacks Darius Butler and Jasper Howard and the defensive line, which needs to pressure the quarterback. Butler and Howard are faced with their biggest test, perhaps all season, and they can’t let the big plays over the top. The defensive line is banged up at defensive tackle but it can’t be an excuse. The Huskies need to get pressure on the quarterback from the line to give the secondary a chance.

North Carolina hasn’t necessarily bottled up the run this season, so there first task is to stop Donald Brown at all costs and let Frazer beat the Huskies throwing. The Tar Heels are giving up 138 yards a game on the ground. The defensive line is massive however at 280 and 300 pounds across the line and the best strategy might ne to beat up the UConn line. Stuffing the box with linebackers should be required at this point considering Brown’s ability and the lack of a passing game for the Huskies.

In NC ,day before

It's a beautiful day down in NC.

I have talked to some people that know Zach Frazer down in Mechanicsburg and the two things that seems to be universal is that Frazer is a humble guy, but extremely poised.

Also, how is this for coincidence.

Zach Frazer's first game as a high school player he came in late in the game with his team trailing 10-0 to Hershey (chocolate makers). Frazer was a sophomore, and it was his first season on varsity.

Frazer comes in an immediately catches fire. There were some growing pains however. There was a fumbled snap, and a couple of snaps that went bad.

Here is the account

The key play of the game was Frazer. Here is the Oct. 24, 2003 game.

When you're going for a win on fourth-and-39 at your own 6-yard line with 78 seconds and no timeouts remaining, there's not much you can do but scratch a makeshift altar in the dirt and make some appropriate appeal to the football gods.

On Hersheypark Stadium's artificial turf, you can't even do that. So rather than compose a prayer, Mechanicsburg backup quarterback Zach Frazer threw one.

And it was answered.

True, it came in the form of a yellow flag and a controversial pass interference call, but that kicked open the door for Mechanicsburg's unbelievable 14-10 triumph over Hershey last night.

Frazer, who entered the game with just 6: 25 to play in relief of struggling Ryan Melick, needed no more intervention, but was divine just the same: He completed 10 of 13 passes for 162 yards and two scores for a most extraordinary comeback.

His 34-yard scoring bomb to streaking tight end Josh Koontz with just 27 seconds remaining completed at once one of the most thrilling and mortifying finishes in midstate history.

Looks like Frazer has a taste for the dramatic. I talked to several of his confidants down there this week. I am going to get something going next week for the bye as far as a story, but there is some good insight on who Frazer is.

One of his coaches in high school was Chris Hakel, the current coach at Mechanisburg, but an assistant to the late Rich Lichtel when Frazer was there. Hakel's team defeated Waynesboro 45-6 last Friday night. Hakel saw the game in the trainers room after his high school game and rushed back home.

Here is what Hakel's impression of Zach was. It reminded him, almost uncannily, like Frazer's first high school game. I had three people bring that up to me independently.

"I thought he was poised,” Hakel said. “He didn’t get rattled and made some nice throws. People got a chance to see his arm strength. He threw it on a rope and the corner was sitting by him (on the Butler touchdown). All he needed was that first completion. I said to him when I (sent a text message), you got to go about preparing now. The secret is out.”

One of the big themes on why Frazer picked UConn was Ambrose and Edsall. He felt comfortable. He had two QB coaches at Notre Dame leave in his one year,David Cutliffe and Peter Vaas. He needed stability.

Also, UConn kept in touch with Frazer even after he committed to Notre Dame.It wasn't overt recruiting, but they were always dropping by when they were in the area to see how he was. Just keeping a face. It also helped that Grant Preston, from the same town, enjoyed his time up here.

Some interesting stuff. Frazer seems humble, but confident. He was still going back to practice at Mechanisburg this summer and working with the quarterbacks when he was home.

Lastly,Hakel has sold me on UConn recruit Tyler Bullock.

When I asked about Bullock, Hakel goes "Now I am not BS'ing here, he is 6-4 280."

Wow. Defensive tackle is his likely spot, though he is on the o-line for the Wildcats.

That's what we call a teaser, I got plenty of more stuff, most of it won't even make it into the paper. Blogs are great aren't they?

Here is the email of the day. Some investment advice from the experts.

I am really not trying to depress anyone but our economic situation should scare us all, look at the facts and enjoy the possible solution:

If you had purchased $1,000 of Delta Air Lines stock one year ago, you would have $49 left.

With Fannie Mae, you would have $2.50 left of the original $1,000.

With AIG, you would have less than $15 left.

But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling (say you bought 67 thirty packs of red dog at $15 dollars each - deposit and hangover included)

REFUND, you would have $100 cash.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

Thursday teleconference

Listened to a recording, studio time went long. Got a nice seat at the NBC anchor desk. Once again, 2 hours of prep for two minutes. Wow, not very efficient.

Not much big news, Kendall Reyes, Alex Polito and Rob Lunn are all schedule to play, though Edsall through in the disclaimer one of the trio is more doubtful than the other. It will be decided today.

I also get the feeling Andre Dixon is buried. Dixon has carried the ball only a coule of times this year, and doesn't seem to have the role that was intended. Thank Donald Brown for that. He was 1a. at the beginning of the year. It's just 1 now. Edsall said Dixon is fine physically and emotionally.

Big worry is Brandon Tate, he is averaging over 20 yards a return on putns and kickoffs. Scary.

I have a lot to do, tommorrow is travel day. I will be back late.

Thursday ramblings

My television career is flourishing (not). I have another 2 minute segment on the NFL Network today at noon and 6 p.m. on College Football Now. Got to love my making the media rounds. I have been on all over the place since UConn started winning. Funny thing is, one loss and I won't hear from anyone until next year. Gasp....I have learned to turn down opportunities too. Trust me man, I don't want to get a rep.

Any of you thinking that Donald Brown even has a remote chance at the Heisman Trophy don't be kidding yourselves. I don't care if he runs for 2,500 yards, 25 touchdowns and the Huskies go 12-1 and win the Orange Bowl. Not going to happen. Why?

Marketing.

I just recieved a box from the Missouri Athletic Department. In it was a ViewMaster (example of what it is above for you kiddies) with a cartridge of Chase Daniel highlights and this poem embedded with the pictures.

Whether through the air... or on the ground...Mizzou's Chase Daniel gets it done... he is helping lead the Tigers... in their push for number one.

The final picture is Daniel talking to Chris Fowler and Lee Corso with a reference to the website. http://www.chasefortheheisman.com/. This one takes the cake. I have gotten, DVD, posters, mini football helmets and even pencils and bags. But, this is a good one. I had a Superman ViewMaster as a kid. Loved it. I don't even vote for the Heisman.
Donald Brown doesn't stand a chance. We have any people who took marketeering who can help "The Don?" Keith Gray suggested free UPS shipping a couple of weeks ago.

Story isn't up on the JI yet, but I did a semi-lighthearted piece on Donald Brown and his 4.29 40. Also, Brown was a teammate of Georgia running back Knowshow Moreno as kids. Both alternated Wingback and running back.

Hope they had the Cochran rule in place down in South Jersey.

Lastly, I love reading reader comments on newspapers websites and reading the reaction to Jeff Jacobs' column in the Hartford Courant yesterday certainly was interesting. I did see the comment of the century however in the section.

From some poster named Waquoit out of Alexandria , Virginia commenting on Zach Frazer not being available to the press this week and the press reaction:

I think it's pretty funny that the press expects more access from a 2nd
string QB from UConn then they do from the Republican VP
candidate.

What does that say about our democracy? The funny thing, or not, is it's true.

In Today's JI

Zach Frazer story of course. It's Zach Frazer all the time this week.

Reading everything today about Frazer, I must say that sometimes good intentions go bad in Randy Edsall's case. He knew what was going to happen, I can't believe he went through with it. Why not a teleconference call with reporters? No cameras?

Edsall has been better this year, but his first reaction is always to protect, and that burned him again. How the heck is the conversation about whether Frazer can speak or not the story as opposed to 5-0 Top 25 UConn team facing North Carolina?

That's not good for the university. Speaking as a professional, I do the stories that are there. I can dig a little more and am working on it. Am I angry that Frazer isn't available? No. It's football for God's sake. I am mostly disappointed because I could have wrote a good story this week on him. I hate giving up a good story.

I will give a brief journalistic lesson. Frazer, as everyone knows, is the story this week. When Edsall says he is available Saturday night, to him 5 days doesn't matter. That may seem to the lay person as reasonable.

To a journalist, five days as well could be a 1,000 years. An important part of story telling is timing. The Frazer story has a time element in it, and by the time he is allowed to speak on Saturday night that time element would have expired.

It's gone forever. Every journalist worth their salt can see the time element of the story. That's why there is push back.

The point that he is available on Saturday and thereafter is moot to someone as myself who want to interview this man who is now the face of the Huskies program.

Frazer is a compelling story this week, but once Saturday happens, the story shifts to something else. The Frazer story loses its time element, and its impact. Frazer may be the story, but it isn't the same story. Friday's story is different than Sunday's.

What does this have to do with the team? ZILCH. It is a distraction, not for the team but the writers. It is getting side tracked from the issue at hand.

Still, my one regret is I think people who read this blog and follow the Huskies enough to read feature stories would have liked to have read the Frazer story.

You will get a Frazer story eventually. But, it won't be the one that would have been written this week. And it's the die-hard fan who gets enjoyment out of reading that story who loses out.
